"Kobe come through in clutch for TV" vol8 issue38 pg8
The article discussed how Kobe Bryant’s 81 point game, only second all time to Wilt Chamberlain’s 100 point game, turned networks ratings such as ABC and ESPN upward. Both networks were facing hard times with low rating. Both ESPN and ABC coverage ratings of the NBA has been down 11 percent from last season. After Kobe scored his career high points, the NBA finally got a weekend to play without having to compete with the NFL. Without the NFL, the week off before the superbowl, the NBA rating went up. The Maximum number of televised games per team is ten allowed by the league, ESPN covers seven of those. ABC also is allowed to carry up to five game appearances by one team. The Lakers have four of those five this season. Kobe followed his 81 point game with an average of almost 42 points per game over a 10 game run. Kobe’s jersey also went up in sales. With the All-Star game coming up, you can definitely except to hear and see more of Kobe.
I agree with what this article is saying that if a player does something over the top that the ratings of that network are going to increase. I myself have watched more basketball now and especially more Lakers games, hoping to see Kobe score an outrageous amount of points again. This impacts sports business because Kobe’s merchandise market has now increased. You can except to see more people at Lakers games now and more people buying Kobe and Lakers gear.
The article is deals with merchandise sells from Super Bowl XL. The consensus from both, the NFL and licensees, was that merchandise sales could hit an all-time high with the Pittsburgh Steelers playing in the big game. This could top Super Bowl XXXI, which is the best as of right now. They also feel that they could eclipse the all-time MLB mark as well. The reason why they feel this way is because the Steelers sell more licensed product within a 75 mile radius than any other team.
One product that is selling like crazy now is the McArthur Towels (Terrible Towels). After the AFC Championship game, there was an order of 200,000 towels, and if they win the Super Bowl, they are looking at another 300,000 towels ordered. Normally in a year they sell around 250,000 towels.
Mark Holtzman, NFL consumer products senior vice president said, “They have deep roots and a national following.” I am from the Pittsburgh area and he is completely right. Everyone from the area loves the Pittsburgh Steelers and takes a lot of a lot of pride watching them succeed. On a sport management note, this is huge for the industry. Sells may reach an all-time high, which means more profit.

Aside from the truly diehard fans who watch for the love of their favorite team or simply of the sport, most people who watch basketball want to be entertained. Whether it comes in the form of an exciting, back-and-forth, down-to-the-wire game or a player dropping an unheard of amount of points, people want excitement and action. So when they tune in to a game and see Kobe Bryant lighting up the scoreboard. they stay tuned in. But lately, as it sits in the shadows of the NFL playoffs and other headline sports stories, the NBA‘s ratings, as recorded by ABC and ESPN, have gone down 11 percent.
So far this year, teams like the Detroit Pistons and the San Antonio Spurs, who are more team-orientated, are dominating the league in wins but people just aren’t as interested in watching them each night. Those two teams (who have both won championships in the past 2 years) don’t rely on key playmakers like Kobe Bryant, Lebron James, Carmelo Anthony, or Allen Iverson who may put up 40, 50, or 60 points on any given night. These types of Franchise players are the reason why TV stations televise their team’s games more than others. Even when Kobe was a part of the Laker team that won 3 championships in a row, the team he played for was much more sound team and had a guy buy the name of Shaquille O’neal, who was quite a dominant player to say the least, by his side. Kobe’s 81 point career night is a perfect example of what people want to see. Now, more people are going to turn on Laker games just to watch players like Kobe and see what they will pull off next.
We are waiting to see how many people we are trying to target, and all the details before we ask people to show up to something that we don't have all the details for yet.

Private aviation business set to take off during event
The article brings the power of aviation and the works between the Super Bowl and the air industry, particularly private aviation. Since of the day from September 11, 2001, the private aviation was hand some bullshit for private sectors arming the terrorist. Yet from that day and the week before the Super Bowl to the clash of the Steelers 600 flights will range the ski using personal private jets.
The weeks all throughout the championships of the major league sporting events, the increase of the jets will be the major source of the technological is used to control the systems. The downside to the Super Bowl week are the actually amount of private plans out flying in the area will cause airport problem and harsh competitiveness for the airways, ranging from the base prices of private jet industry starting at the five thousand ranges to the $120,000 an hour. The best part of the jet costing more, the ability to seat more for less each.
Marquis being the Bentley of the sky ways high contenders and role models will have a Marquis. Mike Jones and maybe the Matt Jones will have one of these someday. All of the top dawgs have them so defiantly during the Super Bowl and the management staff will utilize the transportation at hand.
The personnel group has decided on the rules for the activity and is now just coming up with rough draft brackets which will depend on how many participants we get for the event.
Jordan Routch (personnel captain)
Our group is is looking into finding one sponsor that will cover enough money for the T-shirts and preparing a statement to pitch to our sponsors in mind. Some of the sponsors we had in mind were Subs N Suds, S&T Bank, Co-Op Store. If there are any other suggestions feel free to let us know.
we are currently awaiting a return email from the pittsburgh pirate parrot. we are also looking into possible ads on iup-tv and radio.
We hung some flyers up today and ar ewaiting to get some more printed. It has my email so ill be waiting for people to join up.
Group Leader and Budget group
I think that everything is coming along good. I am still collecting money from people in class. I also talked to red cross group on maybe being a sponsor. With everyone's help this will be a great experience!
Group Leader for personnel
We are also coming along nicely by completing the rules and will in the future talk with a few other groups to coordinate officials and facility management. We are also waiting on how many people we'll get to make up the brackets.
we are conidering having a raffle the day of the tournament. tickets for both pirate and phillies games are fairly inxpensive and it could be an easy way to collect money for the red cross. if anyone has anything that they dont want, or dont have a use for and feel it would be something that could be raffled off please let us know.
I just spoke to the Pittsburgh Pirate Parrot and he believes that he will be able to make an apperance at our tournament.
Well we are coming along nicely. We have colaborated with promotion to correct and hang fliers. On the Fliers, we put on a contact email such as Ryan Watson.
Our group is doing fine as well. I recently attended a 3 on 3 tourney to view how the different game managers were situated and how they managed the games and was able to figure out some different logistics that I believe will help our tourney. I'll keep you posted...
We have developed a wavier for the participants to sign. And we currently have to take it and make copies.
I received an e-mail from the pirate parrot and he will not be able to participate in our event.
ESPN Tries To Bolster Mobile Unit
Vol 8 Issue 42 Page 4
This article talks about the ESPN mobile phone serivce. Mobile ESPN was officially launched on SuperBowl Sunday, and has not lived up to its expectations. ESPN executives are planning on changing elements of marketing and content. One of the problemes with the mobile network is that it puts restrictions on what web sites you can directly access. You are not authorized to access ESPN's competitors websites on the phone. ESPN is also starting a new advertising segment that will hopefully reach more consumers. The company has also dropped the price of the phone from $399 to $199 and has also lowered the service plan from $63.99 a month to $34.99 a month. It will be interesting to see what ESPN mobile does in the future.

"NIke Backs New Jeter Shoe"
This article talks about how Nike is backing Derek Jeters new shoe. Nike is advertising for the shoe with print, outdoor advertisments and Internet ad campaigns. Web ads will appear on MLB.com and ESPN.com and outside ads will run outside Yankee Stadium and the Winter Garden Theater in Times Square. The Jumpman model is scheduled to have hit stores this past saturday just in time for opening day. The shoe has a suggested retail price of $100. They are the sixth Jeter signature shoe to be released by NIkes Jumpman.
I think the class had an "A material" project :)
