NHL hits the street to tout Stanley Cup Finals.

This article is about the push the NHL is making to boost there viewer ratings for the Finals. They have hired an agency that will have street teams in many locations in Chicago, Detroit, New York, Los Angeles, and Philadeplphia. These are high traffic areas which they believe will help boost ratings. The Street teams will be found all over these citys giving out pucks and a schedule for the series. Ratings have been down although this is one of the more exciting playoffs in a while. I believe part of the reason the ratings are down is because the NHL is no longer broadcasted on ESPN it is being shown on the Outdoor Network and NBC. When I sit down and watch games some of the reason why I am attracted to watchin the game is which network it is on. People aren't really familar with the Outdoor Newtork and NBC is in its first year broadcasting hockey. ESPN is number 1 in sports so I know its going to be a good product I am watching, if it is on ESPN or ABC. I think a lot of people feel that way. Also the lockout hurt fans intrest in the sport. I had no problem with having no hockey last season. I rather enjoyed it , I didn't have to sit through the highlights on Sportscenter. The NHL is hoping this aggresive marketing push will workout for them. I really think that it won't work people have pretty much already made up there mind if there going to check out the Finals or not. But I guess they have to try something, more power to them.

Yanks’ parent refinances, borrows $240M
Published: June 5,2006, page 3

The article explains how the New York Yankees, which has the highest team payroll in Major League Baseball, Borrowed $240 million. Upon doing this they have avoided the rules sanctioned by MLB debt rules. Revenue sharing caused the Yankee's their biggest loss this past year $85 million, and would have sanctioned the money borrowed to $25 million. The reason the Yankees were able to get away with this is because their parent company is a borrower. Therefore they borrowed money from a number of lenders including: Goldman Sachs, SG Cowen, GSP Capital, and Bank of America. Its just another case of the Yankees dominance in outspending the league, again leaving the smaller revenue teams behind, even after revenue sharing and coming off a year suffering an $85 million dollar loss.

"Ads to stay off floors in NBA Finals" June 5th 2006 page 4.

NBA will not sell ad space for the finals. NBA wants to have playing floor free of corporate logos and no plans to sell space in the future. The article also talks about only the NBA finals logo will be on the court during the finals. Also no courtside digital technology will be allowed to be displayed during the NBA finals. A test case during the last season was tried by the Portland Trail Blazers to use the ANC'S system, but will not be used during the finals.

to follow up on this i think it is great that the new technology that is being created is trying to make the league more interesting to watch. They are already in discussion with many more teams and i in my opinion think that is what you need to do. Some point you need to draw the line but if others arnt complaining then why mess with the technology its only there to help advertise and thats the whole point what the NBA needs to do to attract more people from all over the globe and so far their doing that.

"Small NFL agents form their own team to fight for prospects"

Ten "small time" agents joined together to create Core Sports Management, a joint venture that is set to expire in two years. The agents will be put to the test for the 2007 draft when they ccompete to gain some of the first round picks. There are agents around the United States and were chose to take part in this venture based upon their connections with current players entering the draft and previous experience. Each agent is required to contribute to a "company pot". The bigger the fees that the agen is able to bring in from the signing of a player, the less that they will have to contribute. Core Sports Management believes that they will be able to successfully compete by providing "efficiency of service"

I the Miller sponsorship is a great idea. It is wonderful advertising for the company and the 7 year lennth of the contract seems like a wonderful time frame. The article states that Miller Brewing Company will now be the clubs largest sponsor which is a great success on both parts. It should be a great success for the Miller Genuine Draft Getaway Days to sponsor no other than Miller. Also it will be wonderful to get the office men and women out to watch some games and drink Miller beer and i agree that it should be a success on both ends. I don't see room for failure with this contract, because if people want to drink a beer bad enough while watching a game and all they offer is Miller Brewing Company products they sure enough will give in to one of the options.

MLS's $2 million man Page 1

This article is about major league Soccer's board that approved a contract extension for Don Garber, which he will have until the 2010 World Cup. Garber is credited with negotiating a deal that will keep the league in the mix and Garber will keep the league in the mix and Garber got MLS rights fee for the first time. All board members praise Garber for his bid in attracting new ownership, raising the sports integrity and attracting new sponsors such as Adidas and Red Bull.

This is Garber's third contract with MLS. He joined the league as commissioner he came to MLS because he wants soccer to be global trend because America has the popular sport of Football where he was commissioner of the NFL.

Garber wants to expand to 16 teams, increase attendance and add more soccer stadiums. He also wants soccer to become popular and respect for the game. because of the revenue from TV, soccer will be able to obtain big name foreign players. With a professional American men's soccer team, hopefully the US team will be successful.

what i think about this matter is that if garber can expand to 16 teams and increase attendance and soccer stadiums then he should because soccer attracts alot of fans and if you can get more seats in the stadiums across the world it will mean more people will come in and go to games to cheer for their teams and their country and for the United States which would mabye make us win a few World Cups because the foreign countries have been winning the cup for years.

No mean for any disrespect but i dont want to see brazil or germany win the cup again. getting foreign players to obtain an interest in are league makes us more of a superior country for soccer its about attracting the most skilled players no matter where they are from all over the world.

AOL.com to start broadband video channel.
This article talks about how AOL and WNBA are going to expand there already existing relationship by adding a WNBA channel to AOL.com where you will be able to see recent games and interviews as well as classic highlights. There will also be content that is geared towards their celebration of their 10th season. It seems every year the WNBA keeps getting bigger and bigger every year they are able to add more teams and more markets across the country. Although it is still nowhere near as popular as the NBA is still has a pretty good audience espcially with young women who see these females as role models. I think if you look at the type of players they had in their first year to the type they have now there sports is starting to evolve. You now see more athletic women in the league. I don't ever think it will be to the point of popularity of the NBA or other male professional sports leagues but its definately a legitamate league.

This article talks about the electronic line calling that will be used at this summer's U.S. Open Tennis tournaments, in which ESPN will pay about $800,000 for the cost. ESPN already televises about 600 hours of tennis throughout the year, and had used the line-calling technology on its technology will be used in-venue. The article also talks about the other three other broadcasters of the U.S. Open series NBC, CBS and the tennis channel are not investing in the effort. The tennis channel also will have to pay ESPN a licensing fee for using the technology.

I think this is great that a sport like tennis is developing and going to that kind of technology. It makes the sport feel important. It also will limit any controversy over any disputed shots at a major tournament that would decide who wins and loses. That has happened at tournaments before and calls like that can be a huge lift for any player who gets breaks like that. That has happened before, one i can remeber happened at wimbeldon in which venus williams was the victim of a bad line call that changed the entire match around she would lose the next few games then the set to lose. it is sad that calls happen in which the wrong player wins thats why it is very important to invent new technoogly.

This article has the perfect explanation about sports sponsorship throughout the world. In this case I agree that millions of dollars will be made during FIFA’s tournament with sponsors from Avaya, Chevron, Gillette and also Adidas who make the uniforms as well as the soccer cleats. The segmentation of fans through these products will leak over here in the U.S. having young children wanting to be the next whoever due to the marketing on television. Now, these corporate sponsorships will benefit tremendously from choosing to affiliate their products with the World Cup which is equivalent to our Super Bowl in the United States. These corporations will be receiving the heightened visibility, sale opportunities, image enhancement and the hospitality from which they have already been receiving it from for about 16 years.
The firm of SportsMark has ties to big events such as the Olympics previously helping Visa create a business forum in Milan. They estimated that 200 SportsMark professionals will serve thousands of peoples during these 64 matches. Things such as ticket sales, how many are sold and at what price, will come into play as well as concession revenues. I believe one of products consistently sold will be beer because the event is in Germany and the majority drinks beer. Also, I agree that the SportsMark staff will grow to 500 due to everything such as hotels, party arrangements, traveling and security. I don’t doubt there will be a need for more help during this yearly event.

Las Vegas group puts out the call for facilities plan
June 12, 2006, Page 6

The sin city has begun putting together plans to renevate Sam Boyd Stadium, as well as Thomas and Mack Center. Currently they are analyzing the cost analysis if they were to attract a professional sports team. They have planned to put up to $200,000 dollars into the study. I believe is a good idea, it would give Las Vegas another attraction for tourists, and being in the middle of the dessert means the weather will be good for a sporting event. With the money that the proposal discusses spending, a possible 2.1 billion dollars is 10 times other newly renevated stadiums. Maybe this means you might be able to bet on a football game while your at it, legally. I could only imagine the extent of audience it will bring, located near the Vegas strip.

Leagues Cut into clubs'Finals Revenue

My article is about how the NBA and NHL make some serious cash during the Leagues respective Finals instead of the clubs cashing in. With the teams having to share revenue from the gate sales and limiting sponsership as well as the usual local television deal being cut by the likes of ABC for the NBA and OLN and NBC for the NHL.The heat right now are probably making more money for a regular season game against the lowly Atlanta Hawks then by playing for the World Championship. Where the clubs can earn back money is by aggresively advertising for next year with the sucess of having a finals appearence. More season ticket holders and sponsers to jump on board and shell out some cash. This just shows how much power these leagues have, that they can take 45% of revenue from a Finals game and put in there pocket. I don't think its right I think this should be there bonus for playing so well during the season that they should be entitled to every penny that they would recieve in the Regular season, for the finals. Players are given Salary bonuses if they win the Championship. Well the league should give the clubs a bonus which would be a bigger percentage of the revenue for sucesssfully getting their teams to the big stage of the league championship.

I believe that since the Ovations Food Company is based in Florida that they will do everything in their power possible to keep up with their pledge of increasing caps by 15 percent by going into business with the Jacksonville Jaguars an NFL team. The Jaguars have just acquired the rights to food from the city of Jacksonville which annually the facility makes $10 million in concession income a year. The building of more portable stands to cook a wider variation of foods is the objective said by the president of Ovations Food Company Ken Young. Also with Ken’s experience in the field of concessions for more than 30 years will help tremendously as well as Ovations Foods in business with the Portland Trail Blazers Stadium the Rose Garden. The Ovations big project now is that they are trying to go into business with the New York Yankees, which I totally agree to be the best business move yet, with the Yankees fans packing the seats almost every game. The sponsors that the Ovation Food Company is now receiving should play a big part in them landing the deal with the New York Yankees. If they were to land this deal their Corporate Sponsorship will be more visible to the public through television and advertising.

"Help sports fans feel their way to memorable experiences"

This article discusses logic behind the decision making of consumer's and claims that they make decisions based on the feelings they anticipate after their purchases. Part of Disney Land and Disney Worlds success may be contributed to the fact that people from all over the world feel the same enjoyment while Starbuck's can be successful not only for their great products but the fact hat it offers a meeting place where you can fit in even if you are alone. When we attend attractions, go to the movies or go on vacations, we do so expecting certain feelings ranging from excitement to thrill to pure relaxation. The anticipation creates desire and
may leave us less than dsatisfied if those anticipations are failed. When sport entertinment products are offered they are done do keeping consumers feelings in mind. This article closes with describing the different types of emotions that different people will have attending the same event or attraction. This article showed how important feeling are and the fact that they drive business in the sporting arena's. Millions of people attend these events and all leave feeling a different way. It is important that sport's managers learn how to derive these feelings and use them to satisfy wach and every guest that may attend one of these events.

NBC will beef up web site for U.S Open golf tourney

This article talks about how NBC is adding more to its website to cover the U.S open more fully in detail. Gary Zenkel of NBC was qouted as saying golf is a perfect internet sport.

In which he is right because the first two rounds they play basically from early morning until night and they have more players on those first two days before they would have to make any cuts.

so the idea makes a whole lot of sense and i understand where he is coming from and is trying to do. Overall for golf fans all over the country who might be working on these two days can check on the internet to see how there favorite player is really doing and if anyone is shooting under par because in the past at U.S. Opens.

I would tune in and all the golfer's where only 1 under or even and that was good enough to lead the actuall tournament. The course's are extremly difficult to play. Also why i think in my opinon why this is so much more better is because watching golf on television can get boring sometimes especially if you are not that much of a golf fan, i watch it for times to see players and what kind of club they would be using on certain holes to some they would rather sleep but they could read up on it on the internet on who is doing what and mabye they might appreciate the game for what it is worth.

Its a nice game to play if your good and if your bad or even k it can be very frustrating, and besides this is the U.S Open one of four major tournaments who would not want to watch or keep track of what is going on.

"Leagues Cut into Clubs' Finals Revenue" June 12th 2006 page 03

This article talks about the NBA and NHL finals and how the teams participating do not make as much money as one would think. Eric Woolworth the president of Miami Heat business operations said "We make more money on a regular season game then the finals." There are a number of reasons for this. Number one in the NBA finals the home team gives the league 45 percent of the gate, 2 there are no local broadcast; ABC controls courtside rotational signage, and 3 the league reinburses the teams for any suites used. Its similiar in the NHL where they have to contribute 50 percent. Basically the finals are a league based event not teams so the league benefits. The article also talks about how sponsors of the teams benfit the longer the team is in the playoffs because of more exposure.

In my opinion I dont think the leagues should take away that much money from the teams in the finals. THe teams particapting deserve to reap the benefits. Its not fair to ask these teams to make there money next year based in ticket sales. I understand that the leagues are in control but they should just take a smaller portion of hte money.

"NBC Will Beef Up Web Site for U.S. Golf Tourny." June 12th 2006 page 4.

This article talks about how NBC is working with the USGA on enhancing their internet web site during the U.S. Open. Linclon Financial and Charles Schwab are sponsoring the site along with NBC. Since NBC has rights to the tournament through 2014, John Miller the vice president of NBC programming thinks that this could be a long term deal. Gary Zenkel of NBC said "Golf is the perfect internet sport, instead of watching the tournament for 10 hours the site allows you to stay updated on the scores and also look at the highlights you may have missed." It will be updated 5 times a day and will include interviews along with shot by shot packages of each player. Some behind the scenes activity can be seen as well.

I think that this web site enhancement is a great idea. Golf is a great sport, but even the biggest fans have a hard time watching the entire tournaments. With this site, fans can see all the best shots and most exciting moments without having to watch it for 10 hours. The site would probablly show more in depth things then sportscenter so the fan would not feel cheated out of missing anything. Since NBC already broadcasts the event, they will make even more money with this web site.

"Old Pros led by Jordan, Still top Sports QScores leaderboard." June 12 2006 page 11.

I read the article on Qscores its basically a survey mailed out to 2000 people identifying themselves as fans of at least one sport from marketing evaluations the company that which a hundred million advertising decisions are made. The group is headed by many athletes that are o longer active. At the top of the list is Michael Jordan with a score of 50 followed by Ripken, Nolan Ryan. THe next most popular athlete is Tiger Woods. Jerome Bettis jumped up from 23 to 32 since winning the super bowl. Barry Bonds and Kobe Bryant have a negative score.

I think that the results of this survey are pretty intersting that the most popular athletes are non active. I think a lot of the reason is because so many of todays athletes potray such a negative image. There are only a handfull of athletes today who can be considered role models. Also some athletes such as Jordan just have a charisma that draws people to them. Other factors such as marketing strategies and the actual performance of the athlete can contribute. Jordan is a rare combination of athletic dominace, charisma, and marketing savy.

Time for a change:Federer signs with Rolex. This article is about Roger Federer who is on the top of the tennis world. He was recently under contract with Lacroix who makes luxury watches. He was still under contract with them until he realized that an offer from Rolex was the must lucrative deal in history he had to break it off with Lacroix who charged him a break up fee as he still had 3 years left on a contract with them. Rolex is the sponsor of Wilmbedon which Federer has one the last 3 years. This article just shows you how much the sport of tennis continues to grown. They now too are getting the big endorsement deals, the likes of Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods.

Rodger Federer just bought out his contract with watch maker Lacroix and signed a new one with Rolex. This deal is thought to be the most lucrative deal for a tennis player. The deal will pay him about $15 million over the next ten years. A spokes person from Lacroix said that it was it was a very good deal for them, but no number was given to the price of the buyout. Rolex sponcers a lot of sport events. Federer is only required to wear the watch during the trophy presentation.

I think this a very good deal for Federer and Rolex, because you have the best player in the world and the best watches in the world, and from the same country so it all makes sense.

NBA eyes courtside real estate
Volume 8, Issue 49, pg 1

In order to give NBA teams a chance to increase their revenue, the NBA has changed its courtside media policy to let teams replace the media area for courtside seats. These seats are estimated to bring in an extra $500,000 to $2,000,000 per team. Some teams will be able to add over 100 seats, which are also the highest price seats in each building.
I feel that this is great for the sport, giving each team more revenue, and giving fans an opportunity to get a more player like feel for the game, sitting on courtside. This could also give the sport of basketball more exposure. Fans will get a look at the sport that they have never seen before, looking at the game from a different perspective, a perspective a coach might have. Media members lose nothing except a free seat, as they will still be able to do what they need to do and get their jobs done. This plan seems to have very little flaws, and I feel that it will be a popular decision for many years to come.

Should Bloggers get a seat in the press box by tripp mickle june 19 page 3.

This article talks about media people and do they have the right to to write web logs, media credentials providing access to the locker room. pressroom and other areas. It also talks about how web logs have emerged as major content providers for information on sports and teams. also it says that bloggers dont want access to the press box because they fear that it will ruin their freedom to say what they wish about their team or sport that is what Jamie Mottram says. Others see access as advantageous especially if they get a well known indivdual to come on air for an interview.

What i think after reading this article is that i can see positive's and negative's coming from bloggers being in the press box.

As long as they are minding their own business and not causing any distractions around the other people that work up there just as the radio and television guy and the media i would let them stay there and write want they want be my guest. Not all the teams will allow that though because they have strict rules that they must follow by and sometimes they would like to keep things private and not let everyone know up front what is really going on. What i mean is say a blogger is up in the press box doing their job and minding their own business a comment gets out about rather a player is playing hurt and not performing that blogger since it heard it up in the press box will take that information and use it for his benefit and at the time the story might be true but it really isnt.

I am not saying that all the teams officals have time to read each and every one of these blogs on the site but to talk about a story on someone because they heard it from another source without confirming it would be a reason why i would not want bloggers in my press box.

I do think they are entitled to credentials to get in though because some do their job in a professional way and dont run into problems. so i look at it as being a positive advantage an a disadvantage also. I think if the professional organizations give bloggers a chance and not invade their privacy on certain matters that they would enjoy them. Some teams in sports might never change their rule unless the commissoner tells them they have no choice but to let the bloggers site where they want to do their job.

It is a very upcoming source for information compared to years ago it is making reading in terms of magazines, newspapers and other forms of reading not sound like a trusted source of information which isnt true they both probaly have the correct information just mabye not at the same time as one another and people want to be updated to the second on whats going on i know i do, but bloggers are just doing their job hopefully they will be welcomed all across the U.S. in professional stadiums near you.

Miller brewing company has come up with a contract for 7 years with the clubs. There will be only Miller brewing advertizements, and Miller beer available to the public. This is a great opportunitie for Miller brewing companies. Miller will benifit from this because if there is only one main kind of beer being sold to the public at games then they will drink it. Some people wont even go to a game with out drinking beer,so if this is the only kind being served then it will be drank. I think that it works out for Miller Brewing co. better because they will make huge profits from this.

"Secondary sports search for dollars"

The University of Arizona girls softball team, the WildCats, have been in the spotlight for quite sometime. They have won seven national championships and have had better attendance than any other team. However, they struggle to feed themselves during road games and tournaments. All of the money earned by the WildCats goes in to a joint fund and is divided out to all athletic teams by the athletic director. The team and coaches are discouraged by the lack of attention the team is given by the university. They are given very little marketing money and agree that they way their team makes money for new rquipment is for the football games to sell out. The article goes on to discuss the sam eopinions by the boys and girls swim teams. They too feel that they are overlooked despite their championships. I think this article has some very good points. Both the swim team and softball team draw attention to the university and their ability to rank with the best in the athletic arena. When it comes time to revenue generating sports, we all know that football is always on the top, however saying that, football can market it's self. I think that all of the teams should equally contribute to the other's success. And with the championships that the less revenue producing teams have one, they should be compensated for those wins.

"Pepsi and NHL close to a deal"

Pepsi has just become the official soft drink of the NHL. This put an end to Coke's 17 year run with the NHL. The NHL believes that they need Pepsi's dedication and enthusiasm to help change and promothe the NHL in both North American and Canada. The NHL has entered a new "era" and the NHL believes they have what it takes to help the NHL establish their modern change. Powerade, a coke product says that their sles were highest during the year the NHL did not play, claiming they did not know if they were going to renew anyways. Pepsi has now become the sponsor for the NHL, MLB and NFL, not to mention a contract with NASCAR's driver Jeff Gordon. This new contract with Pepsi shows a dominance in the market. Pepsi is offering the leagues what they are looking for and is allowing Pepsi to monopolize. I think it is great for the leauges to make changes that are going to benefit, team's and their fans.

The Sports QScores has Jordan at the top due to his likeable nature and personality. Honestly, I think if Jordan was to drop the price of his sneakers a couple hundred dollars or so the scale would move to one hundred and he would be the only one up there. Michael has set some high goals in our generation, winning 6 NBA championships and doing that with retiring once. He also made a comeback in his forty’s and had the Nations capitol ranting about another championship, which didn’t happen. If you look at it Michael Jordan is an all around person in the business world and the sports industry; people from everywhere it seems can relate making him so likeable more than football, baseball, or golf legends of today and the past. Some people’s scores go up and some go down, but it will always seem that Michael Jordan will remain king atop of the list and might be a while until he is dethroned.
On the other hand two players who heightened their points on the chart were Jerome Bettis up from about 10 points. Shaq also increased his score by 6 points from a 27 to a 33. The Pittsburgh Steelers have just won a Super Bowl, which increases his stock when it comes to fans and people liking his personality gains him points with the public. Also Shaq has just won another NBA championship last night with the Miami Heat, giving him 4 NBA rings. Shaq’s child like personality and giving back nature highly increased his points on the QScores giving him notoriety and will increase his revenue with sponsorships and commercials.

Coca-Cola and the NHL have had an agreement for it to be the official carbonated drink the last 17 years. Well this might change because Pepsi is closing in on a 4 million dollar deal which is annually. Coke which is getting the boot was said that they weren’t sure if they were even going to want to extend the contract anyway if given the option. As coke works with PowerAde Pepsi makes Gatorade, which will be the isotonics beverage of the NHL as well. Believe it or not this deal is working best for PowerAde regardless because coke best sales for PowerAde comes when the NHL isn’t even in season. This new contract now basically makes Pepsi the powerhouse over coke being that they now have contracts with the NHL, MLB, NFL, and the number one race car driver in Jeff Gordon. I think this change to Pepsi is going to benefit the league as well as the spectators.

NHL, union agree to extend deal for video games
By TERRY LEFTON
Published June 19, 2006 : Page 10

This article talks about how the NHL and the NHLPA have agreed to extension deals for joint licensed video games. This is news of coarse becuase the NFL choosing to go with an exclusive license with EA sports whom also has ESPN signed on for 15 years. The good thing about multiple licences is that there is competition and more insight in trying to create the best game of that year. Although it worked for Madden, i believe the NHL as well as Nascar, MLB, and the NBA have the better deal because it forces the industry to improve. Madden shut down the ESPN series of video games when they bought the exclusive rights when competition was closing quick. Overall, EA sports produces good games but without competition they never have to improve the game. This makes the market for different games better.

Former All-star basketball player Michael Jordan buys the Bobcats. Born and raised in North Carolina Michael Jordan comes home again to partly own the Charlotte Bobcats. The bobcats are a new organization in the NBA but can only move up from this point. Jordan is the second largest owner in the whole franchise. He will be a managing member of basketball operations, and he will help rebuild this franchise. The whole group appreciates Jordan because of his great knowledge and expertise in business. Many people thought that this wasn’t the right move, but being a part time owner in your home state, and also having your own brand name and symbol, id say he is doing real well even after his great basketball career. This gives Michael a great opportunity to get started and eventually be the only owner of the franchise. He held a similar role for the wizards in 2000 to 2003. He slowly built the team to what it is now a playoff contender in 2006, from the young talent he helped attract. The young franchise was bought for 300 million dollars, and Michael will have a lot to work for to get this team into playoff shape.

Major League Baseball Advanced Media is at odds with company called Sling Media Inc. This company is selling a device that relocates your TV signal to the signal from anywhere in the country; for the purpose of watching a baseball games broadcast from anywhere in the country. If I wanted to watch a Dodgers game I would get the Dodgers broadcast from California for example. This device is $200, for the life of the product. Personally I dont like this because I have already been paying about $100 dollars a year to do the same thing, but obver the computer on a program called MLBTV. This could really hurt MLB because if I would only have to pay a one-time fee for this Slingbox, MLBTV would become obsolete.

When you think of youth organizations you think of youth baseball. Youth Soccer has something to say with its largest organization with over 3 million registered players ages 5 to 19. With this being said Burger King took advantage while signing a deal with the organization to make burger kind the official fast food restaurant over McDonalds and Wendy’s. I think this is a big deal because it gets the name out there more, especially to compete with rival McDonalds, When little kids notice it’s the sponsor, by the things burger king will provide with samples and access to 1.9 million homes, the kids who are easily brainwashed might want to go there rather than McDonalds or Wendy’s. This is a big deal for burger king especially with them getting more television exposure on the fox soccer channel in which the 10,000 team national championship starts for the soccer organization. Gift cars will also be distributed throughout the tournament for “BK” and that’s a thing to supply to get more people eating there at first so they will come back. Burger King also teams up with Adidas and Kohl’s as United States Youth Soccer sponsors.

As a small town team in the NFL, the Green Bay Packers jumped to 7th in NFL revenue rankings. In a year which ended on march the 31st the Packers had brought in about $18 million dollars. Due to accounting changes, and Mike Sherman who now isn’t the head coach, and other staff, some of their money right there had to be used towards those three issues. Even though they had dropped in total revenue to be 7th in the league right now with big name cities, this is great for the small town of Green Bay, and for the entire NFL. The Packers numbers are the only look to the public in side the economics of the league. They made $102 million in national league revenue, 87 of that coming from the television, and 15 from league wide sponsorships. Aside of all of this being a small town team in a big market today is very rough. The Packers though are holding their own and have little Debt to pay if any. They worked hard and did good business work especially getting a publicly funded facility. This traditional program is one of the most profitable teams in the whole NFL today, and it shows you even though they have very small things to work around they made good business decisions in the front office to make good facilities to get there players ready, and whatever else they needed to bring in the right players to have a successful team as a whole.

Wimbledon defies tradition with webcasts. june 19,2006 page 1

This article talks about how wimbledon is going to digital media when the tournament begins next monday, the matches will be available for purchase on the internet and through cell phones. it also gives prices on how much it will cost for the entire tournament to purchase it on the web. It also talks about how many subscribers there are online and how many paying customers.

What i think after reading this article is the new technolgy that is being put out works out for alot of people because it gives them the chance to view the tournament in a whole different perspective other then watching it on television which has always been the more traditional way to watch tennis especially myself because i tune in occassionaly to see who is winning their match. The internet has taken its time in growing coverage of sports other then basketball, baseball, football, hockey.

Sports like golf and and tennis didnt have that coverage avaible for viewers to see which begs the question why was that the case. like i said when i was talking about how golf was adding itself to the web i think more and more sports business companies will follow in this lead because they see this as something that will gradually pick up interest if not all ready. wimbledon is a great tournament and alot of fans from across the country follow it especially if they have a player from there country they even go to england to watch them play. so people across the globe if they dont have a tv to watch they can now tune into the web to get a full glimspe of what is going on on the historic center court where all the epic matches have taken place and its delivered to you from anywhere if you feel like paying for it. The idea is there and if i was running my own company and if i had the resources i would make sure that this coverage gets out to every one across the globe and for as a low cost as possible.

The Arena Football league is a different and exciting football league. It had a lot of gains this past year compared to the last except one major thing. The thing is there television ratings on NBC. For the last four years it was about the same with a rating around 1.0. This rating dropped last month to .9 as an official of the year. This total being compared to last years total of a 1.1 rating overnight. Since it dropped , The company NBC who had a deal with the AFL is reconsidering of even putting it on the channel anymore. I can see where NBC is going with this but what else can top the big NFL football wise, nothing at all, it’s a different type of game which is more quick and holds more excitement. I say it’s a bad deal if NBC doesn’t resign with the AFL because what else could fill their time slot anyway that could produce bigger ratings probably nothing. The AFL is growing in attendance each year, and same with merchandise being sold. I can only see the Arena Football League moving up especially with better talent coming through year after year. Nike sponsors their uniforms as well and is deciding whether they want to renew their contract. I think it would be bad if NBC and Nike take away form this league because I can only see it as an up and coming thing as more talent arrives.

Blues group getting $120 loan
Volume 8, Issue 49, page 7

This article is about how group that is buying the NHL’s St. Louis Blues are getting a $120 million dollar loan from Citigroup bank. The total sale is worth $150 million, as the group is buying the St. Louis Blues and the lease to the Savvis Center, the Blues home arena. The NHL has a policy that owners can’t get loans for more than 50% of a team’s value, but since the arena lease went with the purchase of the Blues, the NHL allowed the sale to go through, even though $120 of $150 million dollars is on loan.
What is interesting, is the before the NHL’s current collective bargaining agreement was in place, Citigroup would never loan out money like that to NHL owners or prospective NHL owners. They do now, because they feel the new collective bargaining agreement that limits owners spending is much better for the owners’ financial success, and is much more financially stable. The Blues even lost over $40 million in the season prior to the NHL lockout, but Citigroup is so confident in the new bargaining agreement that was put in place after that season that it is willing to lend out as much money as it did to the Blues new ownership group. The NHL has a lot more room for future financial success as more people are willing to invest in the NHL knowing that there is a lot more financial stability than ever before.

"Jordan Buys into Bobcats." June 19-25 page 10.

This article talks about how Michael Jordan is now part owner of the Charlotte Bobcats. Jordan is the second largest owner on the franchise bejind Robert Johnson. Jordan's title is managing member of basketball operations.

I think this is great for the NBA. Jordan is one of the greatest sports athletes in American history and to have him back involved in the NBA is good for business. The bobcats are a bad franchise and they need a boost. JOrdan can provise that. However his last stint did not end very well with the washington wizards. Hopefuly Jordan has learned from his last stini as general manager and do a better job turning this franchise around. Either way it should be exciting and entertaining.

"Online- the newest addition to sports degree options"
This artice discusses the growing presence of online classes in the sports field. These classes are catering to all types of people from young adults to professionals that do not have the time, or can not afford to miss out on the opportunities they obtain through their professions to take the time off. These classes are giving professionals the ability to apply what they learn immediately. Taking these classes while working on a traditional degree or while obtaining an online degree seems beneficial to many. Once the degree is obtained it will not say that is was obtained online. There are some negative aspects of the online classes as well. There is a lot of discipline involved, you miss out on the human interaction, and there is alos a lot of failure in these classes. I thought that this was a great article to discuss since we are taking this sport management class online. In my case it is allowing me to finish up my last three classes before graduation without having to overextend my classroom time in the summer or miss out on some interview opportunities that I have this summer. Despite the technological problems that I have had and my ability to not comprehend things in writing as well as when I hear them. I am glad that there are classes online and I woukld recommend them when you are lacking time in your schedule.

Pepsi and NHL close to a deal.

This story is about how the NHL is ending its 17 year affilliation with Coca-Cola. For a deal around 3.5-4 million dollars Pepsi Co. products beverages such as Pepsi and Gatorade will be the official beverage of the league. The NHL believed this was a good move for the league which is trying to turn a new leaf after last years season long lock-out.Bascially I think this was more Coca-Cola decision than the NHL powerade which was the offical beverage before had higher sales when hockey wasn't in season. Which had many Coke execs wondering why they would strike a new deal with the NHL. The NHL seems to think they have worked out the best in the situation. Hopefully it does or this will be just as good as when they left ESPN for the OLN and got lower ratings than re runs of I love Lucy.

BK reigns in youth soccer

This article shows how fast food industaries are getting into sports. BK is trying to target the largest markets in marketing. That would be the youth market, because they don't work but they get an income from their parents. Mcdonalds has got the basketball market for so BK went with the fastest and largest growing market.

BK has signed a 15 month agreement with the USYS. The USYS has over 3 million members from ages 5-19. Overall i think the move that BK made was far more impressive than the one Mcdonals made with youth basketball.

Many sponsors of this year’s world cup are being let go such as MasterCard and Phillips. Taking over for MasterCard will be Visa. From Gillette, Coca-Cola, Fuji film, Emirate’s Airlines, and McDonalds all have had sponsorships with FIFA generating millions of dollars boosting advertisement across the whole globe spreading soccer marketing. Now much sponsorship has joined which is smart due to the marketing of their products and with a name like Coca-Cola besides yours helps boost your sale and name even higher. Each of the six sponsors is being paid $120 million dollars from FIFA. With the building of the Addidas World of Football in Berlin will put Addidas through the roof expecting thousands of people attending per day in Berlin. This construction of this massive building complex will be a tourist attraction to many from all over the nation and added to the sites to see in Germany. Coke is renewing it’s sponsorship with FIFA projecting millions of dollars during these 64 World Cup games and even more beneficial profits and exposure with having a World Cup Tour in many cities and countries. Gillette is giving an award during the games and Hyundai is providing thousands of cars for advertisement to the presidents and the managers of the World Cup Tournament. Every sponsorship is trying to get a piece of the World Cup and the ones that have it intend to hold on to it for a long while, getting involved in many areas from marketing to tours and free tickets given away. Addidas seems to be on top this World Cup year with the new complex and teams being sponsored by the Addidas wear.

Building a blockbuster

Published June 26, 2006 : Page 01

This article is about how the entertainment industry is trying to compete in the sports market. The game plan is to find every sports top agents and form one incredible agency. This is done to put together a incredible group of athletes that are all represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA). This all because the entertainment industry is quite interested in sports and would like to market the top athletes. They have spoke with agents in numerous leagues such as NHL, NFL, and NBA. I think this is a great idea from a company that is already well established. The majority of the world watches sports, so the top athletes are all well recognizable and easily marketable. This will give many athletes the opportunity to do something when they are done playing their sports.

Video games are very big when it comes to sports and dealing with the right company. The NHL and NHLPA have agreed to extend a deal for video games. They have extended it for 6 years with Electronic Arts, 2K sports, and Atari. The NFL had started it all with their signing to EA sports for the Madden NFL franchise. This was only a beginning to other sports to get in on the action. The league had reached a great deal last year after the lockout but with only one company, EA Sports. The league like the one deal but wanted more out of it, and showed interest for multiple licenses. The league and players association differed but finally settled to what they thought was best in getting more companies involved. I think it was a great choice to have more licenses because the more games you get out their, the more the variety is to choose from and people have their opinions on which games are better, and gives them an opportunity to try them all. Producing better games is the key, and the NFL with Madden has set a mark for every sport in the world to have their games just as good and better selling. EA Sports is the for sure powerhouse in this industry especially now because ESPN has signed a 15 year exclusive with them. This makes their company more known, and more kids want it just because of ESPN is signed with them.

With the decline shown in the ratings poll for the NBA finals, this year being a low. Star players like Dwayne Wade and Lebron James gives television stations and the game of basketball new hope in its TV ratings. Due to the advertisers like ESPN, ABC are in joy as the series between Miami and Dallas brought many loyal fans back to the NBA map. This year the Wade jersey was the top seller among all in the NBA. Players like Wade and James will be the new age Michael Jordans in the game boosting high revenue sales to see their acrobatic moves, also increasing the ratings on TV having the all eyes on them.

i think this was a good idea because they used to be linked to the disney movies the mighty ducks, but since they are done comming out with new mighty ducks movies, it was time to move on. i like there new logos and think this was a great step for the organization.

i think this is a great idea for promotion of a vehicle. this also makes it so you can focus on a specific audience and can change the vehicle like a mini van for families to a sportier car for younger kids and college kids.

This article talks about the pittsburgh penguins and the possible sale to Jerry Bruckheimer a hollywood movie and TV producer. There are several people intersted in buying the team but are waiting to see if PA will get a slots licsense in order to finance a new stadium. If that falls through there is a strong possibility that whoever buys the team will relocte them probably to Kansas City or Las Vegas.

Being from the pittsburgh area I think it would be a shame to see the penguins relocate. I think that if the slot license goes through the team should stay. I dont see anything wrong with slots in PA considering several other surrounding states like New jersy and WEst Virginia have one. If it does fall through you are likely to see the team move to LAs Vegas or Kansas City where there are new facilities. With a new salry cap the penguins can compete again and make money in pittsburgh. If pittsburgh can finance a stadium for the awful Pirates they should step up and geta deal done for the Penguins.

The Big Ten and the Fox Network are teaming up to create a new sports channel strictly covering Big Ten sports. The Channel will be called The Big Ten Channel and will debut in August of 2007 on DirecTV's total package deal. The deal is said to be a 20-year joint venture between the conference and News Corp.’s Fox Cable Networks. ABC Sports/ESPN and the Big Ten recently agreed on a new 10-year tv deal believed to be worth nearly $100 million. Although creating a new channel with Fox, ABC Sports/ESPN still has the first pick of the conference’s football and men’s basketball games. The Big Ten Channel expects to carry about 35 football games and more than 100 men’s basketball games each season. Some areas of concern are marketing and advertising this channel to the regions where Big Ten sports are not played. TV consultants are confident that the channel will thrive within each school's region and many believe that of all the conference's to pull this off, the Big Ten has the best chance.

DOLPHINS WORKING ON COOL IDEAS FOR THEIR UPPER DECK FANS. June 26 2006

The Miami Dolphins are looking into purchasing light weight air conditioning apparatuses for the fans that will be sitting in the 400 level of the stadium. It is a small 14 ounce water filled device that creates an evaporative cooling process. This product could be huge in the fans minds on determining whether or not to go to some games. Living in a climate as warm as Miami's, fans have to be considering the weather factor in all games that they attend. Hot games in Pittsburgh sometimes can get unbareable and I can not even begin to imagine what it would be like sitting in the upper deck for 3 hours in Miami. If the Dolphins are able to follow through with this idea I believe there will be a huge increase in attendance this season.

Small NFL agents form their own team to fight for prospects

Print This Story
Published June 05, 2006 : Page 09

10 small time NFL player agents have come together in efforts to sign bigger name early round prospects. The plan is simple, yet rather intelligent I believe. Of the ten, each one will individually scout a geographical region, which will be huge because it will allow them to focus on one area and not have to worry about traveling back and forth across the country to recruit clients. The profit goes collectively into a group pot, so the more money each individual agent is able to obtain from their clients, the less money the owe into the pot from themselves. Core Sports Management did not accept all agents who wanted to be a part of the group, they scanned very thoroughly and looked the agents who could potentially bring the most resources to the company. I am anxious to see how this story develops.

Profit for Packers down 29%
But tiny Green Bay jumps to 7th in NFL revenue rankings
Print This StoryBy DANIEL KAPLAN
Staff writer

Published June 19, 2006 : Page 03

Green Bay finished off the fiscal year in seventh place in total revenue. Although they were in 7th place, revenue dropped 29% due to severence payments to former head coach Mike Sherman. The NFL does not give the public a view of the economics of the teams, but the Packers are publicly held by 112,000 people, so the NFL must report their earnings which gives the public a look into the NFL economic system. Although the Packers are a small market team, they don't have the expenses that some teams do, such as debt from a stadium, which allows them to be a little bit better off financially. Surging player costs are a scare for the Packers, and show signs that other NFL teams that don't do as well as the Packers financially should be concerned about. "Green Bay player compensation will rise 20 percent this year, compared to just a 4 percent revenue increase."

For iSe to become official hospitality vendor of the FIFA’s World Cup for one of the biggest sports events in history brings in big bucks for this company. Having all the sponsors for the World Cup will heightened the visibility of this company which was only established in 1975. For iSe to accomplish this feat is like climbing Mount Everest to the top without equipment. But for iSe they do have the equipment and the man/women power to have venues open for all the nations who attend for the simple right of nationalism for their country. It says that iSe will employ 5,000 to ensure the comfort and food to the 90,000 corporate guests who have opportunities in many different areas such as McDonalds, Addidas, and whomever else is sponsoring this years World Cup action.
With the help from McDonalds and IOC, iSe was able make a major accomplishment and the smartest move had to have been the merging with Dentsu and Publics in 2002 which has generated more that 1,000 offices in 129 countries. Taylor gets 10% of the profit made as the other two companies split it 45% between each other. I believe that iSe, along with Addidas building the soccer complex this year in Europe will be some of the major business deals with the World Cup games. The ticket sales and luxury seating will bring in major dollars to iSe serving almost every food from every nation. That is smart because the owners of a certain soccer team may have not tasted an American hamburger, so when they go back home most likely this iSe corporation can provide the soccer team’s home stadium with the various foods they have just tried and liked.
I think that George Taylor is the luckiest and maybe one of the richest men this year dealing with sports. His company has just landed the biggest deal even of the sports world and is now in progress serving millions of loyal fans who bleed yellow and green or even red, white, and blue and big business’ such as Addidas. I myself was watching TV yesterday and the ads for Addidas are better than some of my favorite ads for the game of football, which makes me jealous and curious to attend a World Cup game or a few to see what all the fuss is about. I am sure that the stadiums and venues are packed right now while Mr. Taylor sits back and spoils his guests with dish after dish of amazing foods from 5,000 chefs from all over the world.

As baseball caps remain the top giveaway at MLB’s games many fans want more due to the cost of the tickets being that of $75 dollars or so. I’ve learned about Bill Veeck in one of my previous chapters that consist of relationship marketing. Since Bill has created the giveaway at baseball games, many other leagues have adopted that process due to the attendance and the sponsorships involvement. Like in the article NBA teams like the Atlanta Hawks give away bucket hats and dolls, but only during their A games. I think having the best gifts given away when it is a packed house against maybe the best team in the NBA will give you a lot of support for the fans. Also if that number one team would loose in your home arena many fans and followers would attend the games due to the win and giveaways when you don’t have that worthy of an opponent. I really appreciate the fact that most of these giveaways benefit charitable organizations such as food drives, soup kitchens, and many other charitable organizations. For these sponsors to give away even that much shows that the game is not all about money, that people actually do care about others well being.
Now moving from baseball bats with the St. Louis Browns to official baseballs and gloves from big named manufacturers is a huge leap in baseball. The Cubs of Chicago give away these items from even having their players sign jerseys for the first certain number through the door. Giveaways like that being a autographed jersey or ball may be taken home and sold by the fan who attends the Major League game that day. Like the craze of the beanie babies, which were auctioned off online the signings of these items of today may end up in some fans case in California from Chicago through the internet. The fans demand these items for themselves and not only their children due to the cost of a MLB game nowadays. Baseball has come a long way from Bill Veecks era of almost everyone afford it to costing an arm and a leg.
Bills son Mike the man behind the thousands of cd’s burned in 1979, ultimately destroying disco forever has put his own twist into the game like his father. Mikes wild antics within baseball has held him up to his fathers image from a lock-in, disco demolition and the love boat memorial day I could just see that now without even had attended the game. Baseball even went as far and attracting many women fans and support with the package giveaways of massages, desserts, manicures, and wine tasting. That idea right there is the perfect plan to get mom out of the house from whatever she is more commonly doing on a Thursday night. To the husbands of these wives this is an easy ticket out of the doghouse and the perfect way for you to watch your favorite game without your wife dragging you from the stadium; instead she will be dragging you to the stadium with giveaways like that. That has to be the smartest idea in baseball history to all men and a savior for taking out the trash next week.

Other companies are planning to run ads on ESPN such as T-Mobile, and Toyota, who also offer online coverage and prizes. I think it is a good idea for the sponsor, they get more coverage. The NBA seems to be happy with it because it is as much draft coverage as they have ever recieved. Overall its a win-win situation.

NHL’s summer goal: Exposure
By ALLAN KREDA
Published June 26, 2006 : Page 06

This article talks about how the NHL needs to improve its exposure to get more fans interested. Recent playoff ratings have been down over the past couple of years. Now the NHL wants to bring their new stars front and center to try to gain popularity. In my opionion i think that the NHL is correct they need to introduce the new stars and try and jar interest from a new audience. Due to the fast pace and high action, i believe with the right angle it could gain ratings. Such as a more reality tv angle where people get to know the individuals better than just seeing them skate around the ice.

It is a great idea that the Big Ten conference landed a deal with Fox creating a TV channel. One of the most influential factors that I myself did not know was that Fox was behind the success of the National Geographic Channel. This deal will last for 20 years and not only televise football but basketball and such things as commencement ceremonies. To be honest, I have never heard of the Mountain West Conference in football, but come to find out they were the first to show their games in a regional network. Not only will the Big Ten Conference be broadcasted throughout the 11 areas of colleges where they reside, but all across the world.
America is picking up soccer very fast due to the World Cup and their televised deals with ESPN, ESPN 2 and ESPN Deportee. Other good benefits are the sponsorships with Addidas and Nike which help spread commercials which I see on TV everyday showing highlights of Brazilian players making fools out of their opponents. Maybe the spread of college football can be spread throughout other countries and regions of the world. Penn State might have loyal fans in Denmark in the next couple of years due to the televised games landing the multimillion dollar deal with Fox Network. The meeting between the Fox main men and the Big Ten offices meet about launching the channel, helping that deal go smooth was the fact that Fox had won the rights to the BCS. The BCS is the most anticipated event of the whole college football season, which is the bowl games between conferences of the best teams and the last and final game the National Championship where legends are born.
One important factor I see that was not discussed in the article may be the fact about the Big Ten when it comes to recruiting can benefit highly from this network. I had read in an article not to long ago that the Dallas Mavericks Dirk Nowitzski from Germany had Penn State as one of his choices to play basketball. Instead he decided to go pro early which was not a bad idea at all, but Big Ten men’s basketball now suffers from time to time could have landed hundreds of players due to a player like Dirk playing there previously. This factor of recruitment may land someone in the Big Ten, the next star either in basketball or football due to the network of Fox pounding Big Ten into the heads of young student athletes across the world. Hopefully with the deal that just went down, for 20 years maybe Penn State or any of the other Big Ten schools will not miss out on the next great NBA superstar of NFL legend.

The Miami Dolphins are working on a new idea to keep fans happy and comfortable. Their is a product out that is a personal cooling system. It weighs 14 ounces when it is filled with water, it has a small fan that creates a cooling process. The Dolphins are looking for a similar product that they can buy at wholesale prices. The item will then be sold at retail stands in the stadium called the Polar Zone. This will enhance the game day experience for the 28,000 season-ticket holders and others who would rather watch the game from the upper deck where it gets extremely hot.

Number 2 overall in the NFL draft, Reggie Bush's face will be seen all over tv over the next year. Reggie has signed with EA Sports, Adidas, Hummer, and Mobil ESPN to name a few. The plan is for Bush to become the new face of the
New Orleans Saints. After Hurricane Katrina, and the Saints not making the playoffsin years. The organization is hoping that with all the publicity(and Bush's ability)The New Orleans Saints can develop their fan base and hopefully get back into the playoffs.

7 years ago Tiger Stadium closed down. There was debate for a long time on whether or not it should be torn down. However the Tiger fans rallied around the stadium. They did not want to see the famous landmarked nocked down. So a special day was organized for the stadium where all the fans came and surrounded the stadium and gave it a group hug. Now after 7 yhears the stadium is finally being torn down. I disagree with this decision. I think it should stay and be preserved. I knowthat when the Yankees get thier new stadium, old Yankee stadium will be turned into a museum, and a little league team will play there. Maybe the Tigers should consider something like this.

Three options are being considered for the rain delayed BofA tourney. This tourney was a senior golf event that was postponed due to rain June 10th. This tour had been the first one shortened since the year before, and no senior tour has been cancelled since 1989. This tour already has a loss of ticket sales of around 100,000 dollars and the charities contributing from this tour are also likely to receive less then expected. This tour has gone to shambles because of the rain and the director is wondering if he should even let this tournament go on. I think they should still let it go on because its should be about the love of the game and not the money that they wont be making more of and also charities will still benefit from the tour regardless of the pay. Even though ticket sales are depleting there will still be diehard fans there to watch great golf play. Those options that are being considered for this rain delayed tour are, Restate the event September 18 through the 24th, Make modifications and make it a two day pro-am, and a one days skins game, and lastly just cancel the tour as a whole which I think would be bad for the game of golf.

Confusion slows pace of wireless
Volume 8, Issue 48, pg 1

This article is about how cell phone companies such as Verizon Wireless and Cingular have been trying to market their handhelds that support video and internet, but they have not gained much popularity. This is not surprising, as paying services for features such as these cost over $15 extra dollars per month which is a lot of money for people who feel that this service is not quite good enough yet, not quite simple enough. The technology for these services is currently improving, but still inconvenient and for the price you must pay for the services. Through the video services of Verizon and Cingular, sports highlights are available.
Recently released, ESPN Mobile is aiming to market their handheld devices to avid sports fans, getting sports highlights and news on their mobile device. The difference here is there is no extra monthly fee for it, but people have still yet to buy it due to lack of exposure. As Cingular’s director of mobile marketing Chris Black stated “It may be a great fantastic experience, but nobody knows it because nobody is buying it.” Due to lack of sales, ESPN Mobile lowered the price of their handheld device to $99, a comparable price with other company’s popular handhelds such as the Motorola RAZR. ESPN has also been showing more commercials for their product, explaining the features ESPN Mobile has to offer and how it is easy to use. ESPN also recently formed a partnership with Sprint, who will now sell ESPN Mobile devices in their stores. ESPN executives feel that the want for highlights and easy access will create a big market for these devices in the near future. I feel that ESPN is heading in the right direction with these ideas once technology improves for these types of services, the market for them will be huge.

Aikman links with Riddell on signature show
Volume 8, Issue 48, pg 3

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman has signed an endorsement deal that will push his current endorsement earnings to between $3 and $5 million dollars per year. The deal is with Riddell, who will open a line of “Aikman shoes.” The first two pairs of shoes released are running shoes, which are priced between $39 and $49 dollars. Next year they will release football cleats. Riddell is known as a football brand which was another reason Aikman was a popular choice to be marketed after. Aikman never wore Riddell cleats, but he did wear their helmet.
A retired athlete getting a new endorsement deal is very unusual, but because Aikman was a football star who bad a lot of national TV exposure, he had a very high Q Score, which led him to being marketed after. Even Aikman admitted that without his time on national TV, he probably wouldn’t have gained this deal.
I feel that this is a good deal for Riddell and for Aikman, as this lets Aikman bring in extra money while it puts a popular name behind some of Riddell’s products, giving them more exposure and popularity.

Published June 26, 2006 : Page 01

This article talks about how the big ten of college has come to anagreement with the fox network on a parternship.Plans have the big ten having there own network on television starting in august 2007 and carrying on for 20 years. The network will not only have football but men and womens basketball as well as academioc contests.A new 10 year deal with espn and abc announced at the same time is a 10 year deal worth about 100 million. The big ten channel with fox will be on direct tv total choic channel and will broadcast to 15.4 million homes.

I think that the package is not good for the big ten but not necceaarily for the other colleges and confernces. The big ten already has a deal with abcand espn the biggest sports networks on tv and i dont think its fair to other conferences that the big ten gets its own network. With the expection of USC there are numerous schools fron the west coast all the way to the east that do not get the notirity that the big ten does. Granted the big ten has alot of good teams but other teams that are just as talented are not getting a fair shake in football and basketball. Take the NCAA mens basketball tournaemnt last year. Many people where upset that smaller schools such as George Mason got in the tournamnet and Indiana who is in the big ten did not. But the smaller schools did extremely well becasur they where given the opportunity despite the fact that they got next to no tv exposure. The lack of exposure furthers the problem that the big school teams in the big ten are the best in the country when that is not always the case, they just receive more coverage. I think the whole big ten network is great for big ten and thier fans but bad for college sports.

"Hollywood top gun setting his sights on the Penguins?"

Produce jerry Bruckheimer has recently expressed interest in the buying of the Pittsburgh penguins. The going price for the Penguins is expected to reach over 150 million despite their performance both on and off of the ice. With the new purchase comes the possibility relocation since their lease is set to expire in the next year. The bank that was hired by the Penguins in early spring is hoping that they can have a buyer by the beginning of next season. This may cause problems with the potential of a new arena for the penguins. The new arena would be funded by the state and would carry gambling licenses. Howecer this will not be reviewed by the state until December. There are a few other offers on the table from bidders who woud like to take the team to Kansas City. it is nice to hear that there are peopl out there that think they can turn this team around and help bring hockey back to ehat it use to be, but in the same sense, you wonder where the Penguins went wrong. They worked so hard for so long to develop themselves as an organization to just watch it slip away. With whatever happens I hope thet the Penguins remain in the city of Pittsburgh and I hope that the city can rally behind them with support.

Arsenal ties $480M loan to new stadium
By: Daniel Kaplan
Volume 9, Issue 10, Page 3

This article describes how the stadium craze that has been in the US has spread to Europe. Arsenal Holdings is about to refinance for $480 million dollars to make the first large scale stadium renevation outside the United States. The Arsenal is a soccer club which anticipates seating 60,000 screaming fans, this upgrads from 38,500 seats. The stadium financing is similar to that done with Pepsi Center of Denver, in that they are both securitizations. The Arsenal already has one large sponsorship in Emirates Airline, who got naming rights for Emirates Stadium in London, England. This is also the largest sponsor for naming rights in all of sports after money conversion. The bottom line is that the rest of the world is starting to catch up when it comes to stadiums and venues, as well as debt methods, and sponsorships.

Sprite Leads NBA draft activation. Sprite will be the NBA’s first presenting sponsor for the 2006 draft. It will also continue its sponsorship through the virtual green room, and NBA.COM with pre draft preparations of top picks, and video journals. Others getting involved with the NBA are T-Mobile, Toyota, and EA Sports. I think this works out well for sprite and the whole Coke organization especially because of Pepsi is doing real good with the NHL, and other top leagues, as well as Jeff Gordon. This also opened the door up to Coke which is now the 5th sponsor to sign with USA Basketball. The partnership between the Coca-Cola company and the NBA is just growing, and helping them catch up to the rival the Pepsi product.

I think that the whole overall popularity of sporting drafts like the NBA has grown signifigantly over the past 5 to 10 years. There is so much coverage on tv and internet, people are intersted to see what players are going where and they want to see it now. Brands like sprite are capitalizing on the situation. It is an opportunity for these companies to take advantage of the poularity of sports to further market their products. It seems to benfit both the sprite and the NBA.

Bush in '06: Saints top pick will be all over TV as pitchman
By Liz Mullen
Volume 9, Issue 10, Page 16

This article talks about the the top paid rookie ever going into the NFL, being Reggie Bush. Bush, the second pick in the draft has already signed six different deals, with companies such as: ESPN Mobile, Addidas, Hummer, EA Sports, and many more to come. He has already in his rookie season surpassed all pro's in sponsorhip contracts, except for the NFL golden boy Peyton Manning. With the recent press he has recieved from the news, a gentleman whom paid for his family to live on in a house just off the campus of Southern California, the cameras have been all over Bush. Although it has not been released how much his contract is worth, they say it is in the mid seven millions per year, without any commercials or any other sponsors. I believe he is a great marketing scheme, freash out of college, winning the heisman, as well as being in the national championship.

Sprite was the 2006 NBA draft leading sponsor this past year. The Coke product has really increased its sponsorships over the past few years with a lot of commercials individualizing big name athletes to help sell the companies image. Show time during the NBA draft is a great way to get the brands name out and it probably did a big number for their business. Sponsoring professional sporting events that are nationally televised is a great way to get the word out about your product.

The New York Mets are currently one of the highest profitting teams in Major League Baseball and they are looking to become even bigger. The Mets are building a new stadium that will open in 2009 adjacent to the current Shea stadium and are looking for someone to fill the void concerning the stadium's naming rights. Investment banker Allen & Co. have reportedly been hired by the Mets and the deal is said to be worth $10 million a year for the naming rights to their new ballpark. The Mets are currently ahead of the NL East by a very comfortable margin and have one of the best lineups in baseball. I can see this ball club being one of the best and most profittable clubs in the National League for a very long time. One of the reasons the club makes so much revenue is the launch of SportsNet New York, the regional sports network owned by Comcast and Time Warner. The new stadium will also bring massive revenue by many things along with the naming rights at $10 million a year. With this in mind, I see no problem with not naming it Shea Stadium to keep the tradition of the famous ballpark going because the sports world is also keeps business ahead of everything else.

This year's NBA Finals between the Miami Heat and Dallas Mavericks earned a 4 percent increase in ratings on ABC this year. According to the network and some media buyers, the increase gives enough momentum to affect the market for advertising in the league next season. Last year, the Finals generated an 8.2 rating and was up 3.7 percent this year, pushing it to an 8.5 rating. When comparing this year's Finals to last year's first 6 games of the series, ratings were up 12 percent. The league expects to use the ratings to push renewal talks with ABC, ESPN, TNT, and media buyers. Although the ratings of this year's finals don't compare to the best rating series in 2001 between the sixers and the lakers, the NBA says this is a step in the right direction.

Building a Blockbuster
This article contained information regarding agencies. Creative Artists Agency is a Hollywood talent agency that is trying to dip it's toes into the sports arena so to speak. I'm not sure that I agree with their attempt to do so. I feel that they may be trying to spread themselves too thin. It could be a problem for the talent industry as well as the sport industry. It was said that they're having secret meetings with agents from other companies and seeking advice from others.
David stern seems to think this is logical for the talent agencies since the largest television commitments in the world are with sports. It may be logical for them to be interested in sports but will it be beneficial or detrimental to both industries?

Promotions
This article struck a nerve with me since I haven't been to a professional sporting event in a number of years. I had no idea that they were giving away such great stuff. I find myself conflicted with the issue. Statistics say that there is better attendance on days when a more popular giveaway is announced.
I guess this is a matter of personal preference for the spectator. In my opinion, I would take the opportunity to see a professional team such as the Steelers or the Penguins for the experience, not for a beanie baby or a bobblehead. A great giveaway would just be a bonus for me. If fans were going to attend a game for giveaways they should at least go on a day where they'll receive a T-shirt or a cap, something they can actually get some use out of.

This article is mostly about control between the conference and with the networks. Previous relations between the Big Ten and ABC and ESPN have been good, but they're looking for more control. I feel that this could benefit the Big Ten schools. It was stated in the article that the schools would be receiving $7-8 million dollars a year per school, over the next 10 years.
Most of the revenues will come from advertising and subscription rates. I feel this new deal will have its' advantages as well as disadvantages just like with any other partnership decisions. I feel that the Big Ten has the best chance of pulling this off in comparision to other conferences.

$480M loan to new stadium

This endevor might be extremely successful in my opinion. Arsenal is trying a strategy that is very uncommon in the United States. I feel that Arsenal can pull this off because teams in Europe are far more financially independent than those of the U.S.
The team will also be developing real estate where the current stadium exists as well as the surrounding area. The real estate plan is completely independent of the securitization because the later is soley dependent on stadium revenues. This loan will be very beneficial to Arsenal.

BIG 12 AND SEC NEXT TO FACE NETWORK VS RIGHTS FEE DECISION

The big 12 and SEC contracts are about to end with likes of ABC/ESPN. It is now time to debate whether to re-up their contracts or to follow the big ten and start their own network. Currently they have rights-fee deals which all contracts are currently. As it is the big 12 commissioner said they weren’t surprised by the big ten’s formation and that it has not ruled out the decision. I believe this would be a great idea for the big 12 and the sec to follow. With these networks, the conferences can earn almost all of the money and not just that of their current deals of not all profits. Because the marketplace is not overrun by college networks and it is a new expansion it is a good time to get in and not sit back and watch the rest of the conferences indulge in the luxuries.

NHL’s summer goal: Exposure
June 26, 2006 : Page 06

The NHL’s goal for this summer is to figure out a way to give the game of hockey more exposure. They just finished their post lockout season with a triumphant return. It was a record breaking year for league wide attendance, as most hockey fans loved the “new NHL,” with the new rules such as shootouts and the reduction in hooking and holding that made the game of hockey the way it was meant to be played; a fast, skilled game. This enabled star players to play to their fullest again, and created a lot more goal scoring and excitement.
The NHL wants to market these star players with billboards, magazine ads, newspaper articles, and TV appearances. A good start before the 2006 season started when Sidney Crosby appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.
I feel that the NHL is heading in the right direction, changing the game this year for fans that have been complaining for years, to make it more exciting. They are starting to market their newfound star players, many who are young and will be in the league for years to come. The new rules also revived the careers of many older stars, such as Jaromir Jagr and Teemu Selanne.
I think that one thing the NHL has done right is to move to OLN, where the NHL is clearly the #1 sport. For more exposure though, the NHL needs to go back to have some games broadcasted on ESPN. I think the NHL should try to have both networks, with the OLN being the prime network while ESPN will broadcast an occasional game here or there, maximizing revenues and exposure.

I think this is a great idea because the league is generating a world wide fan base and with this upgraded site it will help ignite their league by keeping updated postage on star players and having an international section for other countries to keep track of their players that are in the league. It also is going to keep the general public updated with extensive information on international basketball, something the site has never done in the past.
The NBA is on the rise and competting to become one of the top sports in the world with visions like this one they could be heading in the right direction.

NBA Nears Deal with T Partners

This article was published on June 4, 2007 on the SBJ website. It has to deal with the NBA reaching deals with ABC/ESPN and Turner on a new 8yr media deal. This deal when sealed will be made the longest in NBA history (8yrs).The deal is said to be more than the $765 million annual average, the deal speculats that it would bring more money into the league.
With all eyes on the media these days I believe that it takes the glory away from the sports and sometimes the athlets. Athlets are getting to the point where they are not competing on the court or in the field but rather on the big screen or on the billboards. The leagues are willing to pay for the publicity of the sport rather than the great athlets.
I have been places and when it came down to watching a NBA game vs. a college game the crowd would chose college, because the games are claimed to be more exciting, because they are not competing for tv time or who can hang longest from the net, but they are competing againt athlets who care about the sport.
Then we can throw gambling into the sports scene, although gambling is illegal, behind closed doors noone will ever know! Thats the mindset behind the sports scene. From street runners betting or placing bets to even high governing officals placing bets on the hot teams.
I disagree with the money, not just the NBA is paying for the media hype, but the entire sports world pays for the hype. I believe that we should stick to the tradtions that the sports revolve around athlets, not the media.

HBO going back to camp, now with Chiefs
By JOHN OURAND
Staff writer
Published June 04, 2007 : Page 54

This article highlights HBO and NFL Films training camp documentary focused on the Kansas City Chiefs. The show plans to give an inside look at real training camp and is being run on HBO so that the full experience, language and all can be seen. “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with the Kansas City Chiefs” will air Aug. 8 for a total of 5 episodes. This was first done in 2001 with the ravens followed by the cowboys in 2002, but was put on the back burner until now. Personally I feel that this can be both good and bad. It gives spectators a chance to really experience training camp, but it may cause distractions to the coaches and players. It almost sort of cheapens football, making it more about the drama than the actual game.

Your penis sizegenetics is made up chambers, ligaments, muscles, and blood flow. All these things must be naturally increased if you want to get effective male enhancement. Please read what I just said carefully: ALL THESE THINGS must be naturally increased! Not just one particular thing. And this instantly rules out using sizegenetics, sizegenetics tools, and going set for surgery! And that is certainly because those methods are unnatural, ineffective, and in the majority cases, extremely dangerous.Your penis responds the same way your sizegenetics responds at the time you just want to get bigger muscles: Through consistent, natural, and effective exercise routines, you gain bigger and stronger muscles, as well as same goes for getting a bigger penis... plus gaining other benefits!
