"rangers considering bunker suite project" vol.9 iss.37 pg7.

The texas rangers are considering to add field level bunker suites to "ameriquest field", formely known as "the ballpark in arlington". There is only one bunker suite now in the ballpark and is not visible. It was built for george bush who was the owner at the time. The bunker suites will pretty much look like dugouts and will be 100 sq ft. Only three 3 other major league ballparks have these suites.
Building These field level bunker suites will definately increase the revenue for the ballpark, but will also cost alot to build because of the renovations they have to make.Personally i would love to watch a game from a bunker suite it would be a great thrill to see all the action from the field, but it would also be costly. I would much rather watch a game in a suite from the field level rather than one in between decks. I highly doubt the big corporations will have a problem spending the money for a bunker suite.
This article does not talk about how much the angels, indians, and royals are benefiting from these bunker suites but im sure if the rangers are considering this they must be making alotof money off these suites. The bottom line is though in order to get people to come to the ballpark you have to produce a winner on the field, it doesnt matter what your ballpark looks like, it may help with revenue sharing and season tickets, but a winner is all you really need.

"NBA, Amp'd bring live games to mobile phones."
After long anticipation, the NBA and Amp'd mobile the mobile phone that is capable of playing full mp3 songs and downloading video clips, have come to an agreement where amp'd mobile phone holders can now access full live NBA games right onto their phones.
Even though this was a huge step forward for amp'd as well as the NBA, commissioner David Stern of the NBA reported saying that it is actually kind of a wrinkle, due to the fact that the NBA already has a deal with T-mobile, but fortunately their deal allows them to seek other oppurtunities such as the one with amp'd.
Although amp'd is striving forward at a very rapid rate, they still only have 100,000 subscribers which is a very small amount when you look at the general public where 67 million people in our country have access to cable or some type of satelite provider, so for the time being this is nothing to worry about for cable providers or satelite providers, but in the future watch out, comes here comes amp'd.

"Making of an icon, NFL style" vol. 9 iss. 37 pg 1

The Vince Lombardi Championship Trophy, the goal of all NFL teams is to end the season with this trophy in hand. The Vince Lonbardi Trophy is probably one of the most recognizable awards in sports and has been given to the NFL champion since 1967. The creator of this trophy has been designing sports championship trophies since 1860. Tiffany's is the go to trophy producer for such event as: the U.S. Open, the New York City Marathon, and NASCAR's Nextel Cup. Tiffany's feels the most difficult trophy to design is the World Series trophy, because of it's complex design.

I am absolutely astonished at how long it takes to make the Vince Lombardi Trophy. Depending on how much business Tiffany's has, it will take approximately 90 hours to create the trophy. This is 4 to 6 months of hard work that is all recognized on Super Bowl Sunday. After visiting the Football Hall of Fame, the power that this 22 inch piece of metal holds over teams is unbelievable. The Vince Lombardi Trophy means all those practices when the players wanted to quite, when an injury felt like it would never heal, and one screaming coach was all worth it. The creators of this trophy should be extremely proud of all their hard work.

"NBA, Amp'd bring live games to mobile phones" vol. 9 iss. 37 pg 3

I chose to write about the article which talked about Amp’d bringing live NBA games to mobile phones. The big news is that people are able to watch live NBA games on the mobile phones through Amp’d. This is a very big deal because technology is giving basketball fans a chance to watch their favorite team play when they are not able to be home to watch the tv. This is very exciting news to watch live games on your phone. I am a big sports fan and I feel this is an enormous step to be able to watch your favorite sport through your phone. It is amazing that people will be able to catch their favorite team playing when they are not at home. Many people travel and can’t watch the game so they will be able to pull out their phone and watch it anywhere. They will not deal with the disappointment of missing the game. I feel that fans have to be very excited for this to happen. Amp’d is also going to provide a second channel that provides on-demand content such as highlights and game recaps. That is great because some may miss a game and not be home but they will still be able to catch up by watching the recap. I think the NBA and Amp’d will gain a great deal of attention because of this. This may help the NBA to get more supporters and Amp’d will most likely make a ton more money from sports fans. I think in time mobile phones will give people the opportunity to watch all of their favorite sports through the phone.

"New NFL uniforms ready to wear"vol. 9 iss. 37 pg 6

The Reebok Edge Uniform system is now bringing more comfort and lighter uniforms to the NFL. They want to be the performance hockey company so they made a uniform that is less fatigue for the players. This new hockey garb has taken three years to develop, and I think that these new uniforms can go a long way. To develop anything to make an athletes performance better or more comfortable could be a great thing. These new and improved uniforms start out at the beginning of the game 14% lighter than the old ones and with moisture and sweat at the end of the contest they are 25% lighter which is a big step. I agree with this article because anything to make athletes faster with most likely sell. Also being that playing hockey requires you to wear a lot of equipment every ounce of weight you can take off helps. The NFL teams will start out their season in September wearing these uniforms. I feel this article will impact sport industry regarding sport management because a lot of sport management is being able to sell with sports and this is exactly what the Reebok company did and they were successful. Also, being they have Sidney Crosby modeling the new uniform shows they were able to do this.

"Leagues explore ways to make a connection" vol. 9. iss. 37 page 25

The four most popular American sports leagues are continuing to search for better ways to connect with the Spanish commnunity. Baseball can easily do this with citizens of Central and South America because it is a national past time of most Spanish countries. The other sports are having a more challenging time developing a large fan base because many Latin American citizens grow up less familiar with NASCAR the NBA and the NFL. Each of these sports is making an effort to broadcast more events on spanish television or radio. The NFL is second to the MLB with with reaching the broader spanish market, and recently has discovered that Hispanic Americans spend more time following the NFL than average Americans. The reason for this is that as Hispanics become more accultured, they see the importance of the NFL to the American culture and want to become part of it. Overall every major American sports league realizes the importance of reaching the large Hispanic community and continues to search for new ways to connect to their community.

"rangers considering bunker suite project" vol.9 iss.37 pg7.

Recently the Texas Rangers organization has hired marketing consultants PC Spots an sport architect HKS to examine whether or not the investment of bunker suites will bring in a considerable amount of revenue return. Several other baseball stadiums including the Anaheim Angels, Cleveland Indians and the Kansas City Royals have bunker suites available for fans to enjoy during home games. The success of these suites have not been discussed with in the article but I would imagine there are quite popular among the fans that can afford such seats. The down side of this project would be the elimination of prime club seats in the ballpark’s “sweet spot”, which is primarily used for cameras and broadcasting equipment. However, the up side is the possibility that the suites will generate a large amount of money. If the Rangers were going to do this project it would take up to two years and around two million dollars to complete. Overall, the idea of game level seating in baseball is truly creative and has the potential to produce a larger quantity of money for baseball stadiums all over the country. This will also begin to reolutionize the way fans attend ball games.

"Rangers Considering Bunker Suite Project" vol.9 iss.37 pg7.

I believe that the bunker suite project is a good idea if it will provide a profit and not a defict. Many fans want to get as close as possible to a professional athlete. Since they want to do that fans will pay more money for those courtside, baseline, or sideline tickets. If fans are willing to pay money for those tickets they will pay even more money for the ones on the field. It is also a great idea to have a marketing consultant to find out if this investment will bring in a profit for the field. It would not make sense to spend millions of dollars and a lot of time on a project that will not help out the field. If that would happen then the field and management would be worst off then before. I believe that the bunkers will be successful, because other fields are having a profit from this.

"New NHL Uniforms Ready to Wear" vol. 9 iss.37 pg6

I thought that this was a good article, and that the idea of having new uniforms in the NHL is a really good idea. It is benficial to all the parties that are involved. Reebok makes out because they signed a 10 year contract that will more than likely produce major profits, and the NHL benefits because its players should be able to perform better because of the new style. The NHL is showing that they are doing everything possible to get the most out of their players. The new uniforms are designed to have better moisture resistance, and also will weigh alot less. One of the best things about the new uniforms, from a fan's perspective, is that they will be the same price as the current NHL authentic jersey. All in all, I think that it is a good idea, and mostly everyone involved will benefit from them.

After reading this article, I believe that the new change in uniform in hockey is very positive for the sports industry. Hockey right now in the U.S. is slipping from the 4th most popular sport to number five fallen behind Football, Basketball, Baseball, and even NASCAR. The new jerseys will sell more and therefore advertise the sport of hockey a great deal. As you can see, this change is nothing but positive for all parties. The Reebok Edge Uniform System will benefit players by being 14% lighter and having an improved moisture resistance. In conclusion, the new uniforms are a positive aspect for hockey and most important they will still be the same retail price as the old jerseys.

"What's In Store" vol.9 iss. 37 pg. 11

I chose this article because I think the Texas Rangers have a great idea to open up their market to the Dallas area which is just 30 minutes away from their ballpark. The Rangers plan to open up a store in downtown Dallas to sell tickets and team merchandise. Also, the team wants to offer more concession incentives when buying tickets for a game.

I agree with the Rangers idea to open up a store in the Dallas area. The Rangers finished 16th out of 30 teams in average attendance for the 2006 season with an average of 29,491 a game. I feel they will be able to gain more fans from the nearby Dallas area and hopefully spark an interest in baseball for the younger population. The Rangers should also see a large boost in merchandise sales. The team is reaching out to the Dallas market in an effort to get the casual fan to come out to a few more games than they usually would, without letting the travel time get in the way.

"Name Change Would Make Canton the NFL Hall of Fame" Volume 9 Issue 37 Page 8

Sources have given strong feeling to the rumor of the NFL buying out the Football Hall of Fame. This would change the name to the NFL Hall of Fame. The hall of fame will still remain in Canton, Ohio even if non-profit organization is bought out by the NFL.

I strongly disagree with the idea to change the name. The hall of fame was created to store the history, legends, developers, and others who have greatly contributed to the game of American Football. I find taken out other contributors to the sport beside the NFL, sort of takes away of the great heritage of the game. The NFL is the largest associate with the hall of fame and should be honored and take great pride, but should never take away from others who have; and will continue to make the sport the most popular in the nation.

"NBA, Amp'd Bring Live Games to Mobile Phones" Vol. 9 Issue 17 p7

This article is talking about how being able to watch live video of major pro sports events actually has not become a reality. Amp'd mobile announced last week that the NBA is another addition to its Amp'd Live entertainment on their mobile devices, and even at no extra charge to their customers.

I highly agree with this idea. Because it helps with the NBA ratings and it also helps the fans out as well. So it's really a win-win situation. If you're on the go and aren't able to be at home that night you're team is playing, well at least you can watch the game on your cell phone (if you have amp'd that is). And since it's no additional cost to any of the customers that's even a big bonus too! Because if it was an additional cost to Amp'd customers I'm sure they wouldn't be using that service. But really, it's a great way to get NBA ratings up and to have their fans on the go be able to keep up with their teams live, rather than just checking the scores after the game is done. I know if I had this type of service on my cell phone I'd use it, because I can't always watch my favorite NBA team at home. This also helps Amp'd mobile get out there more on the market. It's a great marketing strategy for them, because when people see they can watch the games from their cell phones and not have to possibly work their schedule around the t.v. at home, you know people will think of possibly getting an amp'd cell phone. Like I said previously, it's really a win-win situation all together. It helps out the NBA, helps the fans, and it also helps out Amp'd Mobile. I think the idea is great!

"Name Change Would Make Canton the NFL Hall of Fame"
Volume 9 Issue 37 Page 8

I believe the name change of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to the NFL Hall of Fame would have little to no effect to its image. Pretty much everyone already associates the Pro Football Hall of Fame as the main "NFL Historical Site". The Hall of Fame already preserves the history of the game of football from all stages of its development. NFL merchandise is already sold their and as for tourist attraction, the name is already out there to the fans of football. By putting the NFL emblem above the doors, it will not have any more attraction to the eye of the tourist. Why change an already good thing that already works hand in hand with the NFL?

"New NHL uniforms ready to wear" vol. 9 iss. 37 pg.6

I feel that the NHL's decision to switch to new uniforms will be very beneficial to the league. Some would argue that the NHL is losing tradition with the switch to the new style but I feel like it will only help the players out. The new uniforms are 25% lighter by the end of the third period which means less fatigue for the players and more action for the fans. I also think that new jerseys might attract new fans to the sport and help hockey become a popular sport once again in America

"Leagues explore ways to make a connection" Vol. 9 Iss. 37 pg. 25

This article discusses the involvement of Hispanics in American sports either as fans or players. Professional sports leagues are particularly interested in blending other cultures into our society. One culture of interest are Hispanics. The NBA, NASCAR, MLB and the NFL have all drawn Hispanics to become fans. Among these, the MLB ranks the highest interest among Hispanics. However, studies show that more interest is starting to develop among Hispanics in the NFL, NBA NASCAR, and NHL.

Since Americans place the greatest interest in Football and Basketball, I feel that it is important for these leagues to promote or draw in fans from different backgrounds, such as Hispanics. Like the NBA, other leagues could create projects that would help the involvement of Hispanics in football, hockey or NASCAR as well. I believe that it is very important that these leagues try to blend others into our culture.

Grey Goose vodka, a Bacardi brand signed a seven figure deal with Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies. The deal was that Grey Goose will sponsor the event. Grey Goose is now the only hard liquor sold at the races. The Breeders' Cup has recently added three new Championship races and has moved their race day from Saturday's to Friday's. The change in plans for the Breeders' Cup will make a positive impact on not only the event but for Grey Goose. Grey Goos is in charge of buying media for the races on ESPN. In return they will build an even bigger name for themselves.
In my opinion Bacardi, Grey Goose has made a good decision that will increase the selling of grey goose. Horse racing has been big for many years, it was one of the first sports known to man, and its popularity is still extremely high. The demand for Grey Goose will rise. Why not put one of the classiest drinks with what people think is the classiest sporting event around. Grey Goose will have a positive effect from this because I find that people who attend races have three things in mind... betting money, drinking alcohol, and winning money. Grey Goose has made a "Classy: Choice. I think that bringing Grey Goose and Horse Racing together will have an impact on the sport of horse racing, however; it may or may not be positive. For those bidders who do not enjoy Grey Goose, but instead another hard liquor they may decide that going to the Breeders' Cup is no longer for them.

"New NHL uniforms ready to wear" vol. 9 iss. 37 pg.6

I think that the only reason the NHL should switch to new uniforms is to help with sales because the NHL has in my opinion decreased in the public interest of many people. They are good for the players because they are 25% lighter but I think the average fan could care less about that. If there are new styles that would help increase sales of jerseys because fans would not want to have the old uniform. Really though I think hockey is not a favorite sport anymore and I think will continue to be less appealing to people so they are becoming pretty desperate it seems to me.

“Stadiums strengthen their wireless coverage” vol. 9 iss 37 pag5.

This article discusses the importance of the development of stadiums no matter how modern they are. When the technology rushes forward as it does its important that the stadiums and arenas rush along with it. The most important issue for the arranger of the stadium and events are to keep the audience the stadium. As long as the audience stays at the stadium they can spend money. To keep them there they have to feel comfortable and have access to everything they need and want.
That’s why it’s important to strengthen the wireless coverage in the stadiums so that the audience and journalists can feel comfortable in the stadium and be able to do their work there and so an.

This article is very informative for sports fans all over. Time and time again cell phones lose service in stadiums and fans calls are dropped. Now stadiums have in corporated stronger wireless converge in their blue prints. stadiums are working towards reducing the number of dead spots so wireless devices keep signal. The Dolphins stadium where teh Super Bowl will be held went through a renovation of $350 million to ensure that teh stadium provides teh best service money can buy.
These renovations are needed because wireless network use has increased tremendously.

I agree with Reebok making new jerseys for NHL players. Being that they introduced the jerseys this past week at the allstar game it allows the stars of the game to wear and see how different the jerseys are. I think that the players will benifit wearing the lighter jerseys because with all the equipment and sweat the new fabric wil prevent the heavy load. So i definantly agree with the lighter jersey. I think that this article will impact alot of other organizations on all levels from highschool to the Pros. On this level people come to see professional athletes perform they want the best show. If theres something that can help these athletes perform at a higher level i think that all sports should take a look at reebok and maybe see if the can benifit also.

"New NHL uniforms ready to wear" vol. 9 iss. 37 pg. 6

As a current hockey player, I'm always interested to see new improvements to the game. Although changing something like uniforms probably won't reshape the way hockey is played, it could add an extra edge which will eventually attract fans and make the sport more exciting to watch. Jersey sales will increase next season because fans are always looking to buy the newest product and this will generate more revenue for the teams. The new jerseys will help keep players drier and move better because of their lightweight design, hopefully creating even more highlight reel goals and saves. Some skeptics may say why fix something that isn't broken, but I look at this as a challenge to the other major sports to keep up with their competition, and introduce a new variable to a market which may begin to grow stagnant. I know for one, i'm ready to Experience the new Evolution next year.

Making of an Icon, NFL Style vol. 9 iss. 37 pg 1

The Vince Lombardi Trophy is the pride and joy of the NFL. It is every single team, every coach, and every player's dream to win the Super Bowl and hold up the prestigious trophy at the end of the year. But I don't think any of them realize what it took to make that trophy. I was amazed to realize that it takes 90 man hours to make the Lombardi Trophy. This can take up to 4-6 months even. The trophy weighs seven pounds and stands 22 inches tall; it is made of sterling silver.

I am very excited for the Super Bowl this year. I was always very in to the game and also enjoy the commercials. What's different about this year is now when I watch the winning team hoist the trophy in the air, I will know what it took from the people at the Tiffany's company to make the precious trophy. I will appreicate the beauty of the trophy so much more.

"Office Depot takes care of biz, extends its NASCAR deal," volume 9, issue 37, page 4

I believe that this is big for Office Depot to get their NASCAR deal because of the fact that NASCAR is becoming one of the fastest growing sports in America. The NASCAR fan base, in the past, has mostly been redneck type people from the south. Now NASCAR is advertising more and more all over the United States and is starting to interest more business type of people, and these are exactly the type of people that Office Depot need to advertise too.

When i watch NASCAR on TV I see 200,000 fans at the race tracks, plus all the millions that watch it on TV. For that reason I believe Office Depot has hit the jackpot with the deal that they are in. On top of that, NASCAR handed Office Depot the Marketer of the Year award, which probably gave them some extra incentives towards their newly aquired deal.

"Grey Goose vodka steps up to Breeders' Cup race sponsorship" volume 9, Issue 37, Page 33

I feel this is a good step in a positive direction for the Breeders’ Cup. The Breeders’ Cup is considered the best thoroughbred horse racing in the world and Grey Goose is considered by many to be one of the top vodkas in the world. The two sides come together very nicely. This will help the Breeders’ Cup flourish in ways that they didn’t last year when they did not have any sponsors at all.

You wouldn’t thing that with a big organization like the Breeders’ Cup that sponsorship would be a big deal, but in reality it is one of the most essential elements. Without funding there would be no events in the first place. So sponsorship effects organizations at the very roots, which they originate from. No organization can make it without some kind of outside funding.

"Rangers Considering Bunker Suite Project." Volume 9, Issue 37, Page 7

After reading about the plan the texas rangers had about building bunkers suites i thought it was a great idea. I read further on to discover that this is not the first stadium to do this project. I think that they are really cool and wish i had the money to attend a game in one of these suites. I think the idea will bring in more money for the team which is great.

The only issue with these bunker suites is that they might have to push the seats back that are behind home plate. I say push them back. If people are spending as much money as they say on these seats then they should have the best seat in the house. I dont hinnk it would effect the other seat that bad. Every one cant have a great seat.

I was upset to find out that Dan Marino will just be making his usual CBS pregame appearance. Typically the major stars of an NFL franchise will be honored in some fashion before a Super Bowl game in their own stadium. When you think Miami Dolphins, you think Dan Marino, so this is an unusual situation.
I think that if more of an emphasis was placed on Marino during Super Bowl week activities, It would be more appealing to the locals. Only Dan who is under contract with CBS will make money from his name this weekend. He should at least be honored on the field before the game.

" NHL cap createst a new class of scouts" Volume 9, Issue 37, Page 3,31

Several professional sport organizations, including the NBA, have implemented a type of digital-recruiting to sign players, and the NHL is the most recent to join the new craze. Using a computer database to determine the pay players should receive, based on performance and productivity is something that experts say will revolutionize the way teams trade, pick-up, and release players.
I however, do not believe a computer program knows better than an actual person. Computers cannot measure the chemistry players have with one another. The NHL calls this a revolution. I don't see why everyone is so excited. Some players will be overrated by the program as well as underrated. The program bases its decisions on a few statistics entered into the computer. Although the program is very advanced, I still think it is foolish to implement this type of program.
Although the program is good to allow teams to discover players that are not as popular as others, I still think it is a risk that the NHL shouldn't take. Even though the NBA uses a similar type of system, I don't believe it is working very well for them either. Teams seem to be more one sided than they have been in the past. Although it could be a result of arrogant players, it also could show that this is the wrong route to recruiting players.
I don't think it will take long for the NHL to realize that putting together a team using a computer database is a bad idea. I don't know what is so wrong with the traditional scout. The NHL has survived just fine so far and I don't think it should change its ways.

"dolphin stadium adds event space" vol 9, issue 38, pg 24

The Miami Dolphins will be hosting superbowl XlI on sunday at dolphin stadium in miami for the 9th time. Although the superbowl will be played in the same stadium as the previous 9 times it will look a bit altered because the Miami dolphins have begun work on a 250 million dollar renovation process. This expansion will give them more floor space, which would enable them to open up more restuarants, party rooms, and concessions. They have also installed two new scoreboards which will be showcased at the superbowl.
By doing these renovations it will sell more tickets to fans, especially season tickets, There main goal is too to get the superbowl though once again, If anyone should benefit from this it should be the marlins who play in the same stadium they average under 10,000 fans a game and a stadium renovation will not only boost revenue for the dolphins it will especially for the marlins.

"NFL adds to XL success."
Last years Super Bowl, Super Bowl XL, or 40, was one of the biggets Super Bowls in recent memory as far as marketing goes, many marketers believe that this years super bowl will not be as successful do to the fact that it is not a round number?
But so far the marketing thematic of "One game. One dream," has been doing very well, one theory on why marketing is doin so well is becuase the I in super bowl XLI is represented by the pylon at the corners of the endzone, and marketers say they are about par with last year up to this point.
According to Susan Rothman who is VP of consumer products, all her clients such as coors, pepsi, and so on are all about 60 weeks ahead of schedule , but the only fault that they have is that there is no symbol or theme for the next three super bowls.

The NFL and host Committee this year are trying to make the Super Bowl more accessable for the average Joe that is lucky enough to score tickets to the big game. There are many private parties that go on during the week leading up to Super Bowl Sunday, but as stated a lot are private. The Host Committee and the NFL are now sanctioning fewer events, but more accessable events.

The long run plan is to make the Super Bowl live up to all the expectations of fans. On the table is a plan to keep the Super Bowl in warm weather climates. Unfortunately for northern states, they will be losing out on all the publicity and dazzle that goes along with hosting the Super Bowl. From a marketing point of view, this idea is great because they can host more events outside in warm weather states. More events may attract more people just to join into the festivities. The article also mentioned moving the pro bowl to the same host of the Super Bowl. This is a rather smart move since the city is already well prepared to host the event. The only thing that gets hurt is tradition.

"Warm weather perfect for parties" vol. 9 issue 38 pg. 21

The Super Bowl is America's biggest sporting event for all the right reasons. The entertainment, advertising, new commercials, and most importantly it is the NFL Championship. In this article, it discusses how the warm weather of Southern Florida will only benefit outside events for clients and the public. I agree with this article 100%, due to the fact all these events are hosted by Playboy, EA Sports, Motorola, and Sprint Nextel will take place on South Beach. South Beach is only located 17 miles from Dolphin Stadium, where the Super Bowl will take place. Therefore, the location is perfect for the public and for corporate sponsor’s parties. This area is more trendy and a hot spot, so the party scene should really be a site to see. In conclusion, I believe the warm weather of Florida is great for the party scene and everything else that comes with the Super Bowl.

"MLS sked spreads Beckham around" vol. 9 iss.38 pg.1,35

I chose the article about David Beckham because he is the most marketable player in the soccer world. I agree with what the MLS is doing by scheduling Beckham's team(the Galaxy), to appear in the other 12 cities ,once each, during the second half of the season.

By doing this the MLS will give each city a chance to get Beckham on their field. This will create a massive economic impact in each city directly through ticket sales and many other other areas such as hotels and concessions. Americans have never been able to see Beckham play in person so there will be a high demand to see the best player in the world. Teams will increase revenue by making fans buy tickets to multiple games just to get a ticket to the game against the Galaxy. The increased attendance will probably increase the interest in the league in a country in which it does not get much recognition.

Turner turns to 'Entourage' actor... Volume 9 Issue 38 Page 11

Tuner Sports has decided to have Jeremy Piven, an actor from the hot relatively new T.V. show 'Entourage' be the face for the playoff advertising campaign. Piven is an Emmy Award winner who will have five thirty second time spots that are going to be shown starting this week and running till after the All Star game.

Jennifer Storms, senior vice president of marketing and programming for Turner SPorts has the right idea. She thinks that the NBA needs to appeal more to the entertainment fan. Using Jeremny Piven is a great way to get that started because like I said Entourage is one of the hottest shows out right now, and Jeremy Piven, is one of the "it" guys on the show.

Turner Sports is also buying on-air on the E!, Network and the USA Network. Another great idea is that they are buying radio promos on rock and country stations. I think that this is a great idea because they are reaching out and trying to grab the attention of other types of people. Like we discussed in class last week. There are two different types of Marketing traditional and sports marketing and this is definetly not a traditional form of marketing. I think that the ticket slaes will def. become larger after making a jump like this.

Turner turns to 'Entourage' actor... Volume 9 Issue 38 Page 11
I think it is a good idea that the NBA is using Emmy Award winner Jeremy Piven in a bunch of All Star game commercials. Piven is now a very popular actor since the show Entourage on HBO has taken off. People see the excitement he brings with his personality and I think it will help the NBA out. He is very comedic on air and I would expect that out of these commercials so I think the NBA made the right decision in choosing him for these commercials.

Super Bowl XLI is by far the most hyped and anticipated sporting event of the year for the United States of America. This year it will be held in Miami, FL which is a big change for last years Super Bowl in Detroit, MI. This article brings up many reasons of why to hold a big sporting event in a warm weather location. The main reason for holding such an event in a warm location is because big name companies and celebrities will be more inclined to attend and partake in the pre and post game events. This also helps companies marketing schemes focus on consumers at a more personal level by being able to have free samples of a product and detailed information on a product or service. This in turn may help companies gain popularity and more importantly future revenue. Some big name companies that will be holding outside events are prior to the Super Bowl are: Sprint, Nextel, Motorola, and Playboy. The advertising and entrainment surrounding the Super Bowl is unconquerable compared to any other sporting event around the nation or even the world, so what better place to have it than Miami’s trendy South Beach. Overall, this article shows how in depth event managers have to think in order to make and event as successful as possible for their company.

"PGA Tour cultivates Lending Tree Deal" Vol. 9 Issue 38 p 10

It is talking about how Lending Tree has made a deal with the PGA Tour for advertising on their website along with a deal with the media on tour telecasts and print.

I agree with this type of marketing. It really helps Lending Tree get it's name and company out there more. Plus it also helps get the PGA Tour out there more along with their website. It helps customers who are debating on going with Lending Tree for loans to get great deals on golf merchandise if they refinance their mortgage or home-equity loan from a co-branded PGA Tour website.

I feel that this will help get Lending Tree out there more name wise. Because the PGA Tour has really started to grow in popularity, it will help get Lending Tree to get it's name out there with a growing sport. It also helps by getting people interested in golf more because if customers refinance their home mortgage or home-equity loans through a co-branded PGA Tour website they get to receive a $250 to $750 credit towards golf merchandise or even rounds of golf. So that helps people get a little more interested in the sport of golf as well. It's mainly another win-win situation in the marketing area for both Lending Tree and the PGA.

"Warm weather perfect for parties" vol. 9 Issue 38 pg.21

No one can contest that the Superbowl is by far the biggest sporting event of the year in the United States. So it makes sense that the NFL would have the Superbowl in a warm weather climate. Having it in a place such as Miami draws the attention of everyone, including celebrities. The article talks about how various companies take advantage of the good weather to market their product. Companies such as Sprint, Nextel, Motorola, and Playboy are all hosting parties and activities on South Beach, which is less than 20 miles away from where the Superbowl is being helf. That makes for the perfect Superbowl party setting. I agree with the article and think that those companies involved have the right idea in having their parties in that location.

"NFL puts fan's spot on TV's biggest stage" vol. 9 issue 38 pg.1

The idea of the NFL to hold a national contest to ask its contestants to pitch their Super Bowl commercial idea was a great one. Not only does a fan get his, in this case, "30" seconds of fame but the Broadcast company doesn't have to go out and spend top dollar on an agency to get a descent pitch. It was a chance to give a football fan the ultimate package; super bowl tickets and national recognition.
I see more and more companies intrigued into doing something similar to save them money from agencies and instead to put it towards that 2.6 million dollar ad during the super bowl. Compared to the contrary, Ad Director Joe Pytka, says, "This is a nation of stupid people, so I don't see any future in this." It sounds like he is worried of an average Joe stealing his thunder and creditability. I guess we’ll have to wait until next year to find out.

“Turner thinks strong schedule will turn around NBA ratings” vol. 9 issue 38 page 12

I agree very much with this article because basically what they are saying is the want to NBA ratings to be higher and by doing this they are going to have a game on every Sunday so everyone will know when the game is on and it will become a routine. I think that this will result in a lot more viewers. By making a routine out of their game schedule viewers will know ahead of time when games are being played. Also, they have a set day during the week which is on a Sunday where a lot of people are not working and just relaxing so therefore they will have time to watch it and will be tuned in to watch the game and follow it every week. They are really selling the whole NBA Sunday on ABC which I think is really connecting to the viewers more.

“MLS sked spreads Beckham around” vol. 9 issue 38 page 1

As many of us know David Beckham is coming to the U.S. to play soccer for the MLS. Many fans are thrilled at this. I also feel it is exciting news to be able to go to a MLS game and see David Beckham. The Los Angeles Galaxy is hoping that their team will gain a great deal of popularity and revenue to the team. They hope to profit off of Beckham coming to the team along with helping the soccer team’s record. The other MLS teams are also hoping to profit off of Beckham coming to the U.S. I definitely feel they will. In a year each team only plays each other only once or twice and many teams want to use this to their advantage when playing against Beckhams’ team. They hope that by having David Beckham at their stadium that it will help their team profit and that it will encourage attendance to their games. I think this is very true because I feel they will profit from this easily. Many people are David Beckham fans and they will do anything to see him even if it is to travel to another state to see him. People will go to watch him play whereever he goes giving each MLS team more money. The MLS also feels that Beckham will help their sponsorships. I definitely think it will because everyone knows him and wants him to promote their product Beckham will definitely push the attendance wherever he goes and he will make the MLS a ton of money so therefore I feel this is a good idea.

"Warm weather perfect for parties" vol. 9 issue 38 pg. 21

The Super Bowl is always the ultimate sporting event each year and for its mangers, it is the most elaborate, in-depth planning for an event. A big change was made this year from the previous Super Bowl which was held in chilly Detroit, to Miami. The warmer weather brought ideas for a perfect party scene. The NFL teamed up with Playboy, EA Sports, Motorola and Sprint Nextel to help gather crowds for Super Bowl XLI. These crowds will include celebrities and big name companies. To help with this, Playboy is hosting several different events, including a pool party with Playmates. Sprint Nexel, EA sports and Motorola will be given the opportunity to promote products through exhibits.

This entire event will be held the popular, hot spot of South Beach, Florida. What could be a better place for promoting the Super Bowl and the NFL, as well as big name companies, the hot spot hotels and night life of South Beach? To add to all of that, the opportunity to meet celebrities, Playmates, and NFL stars only creates more of a reason for people to travel to South Beach and partake in these Super Bowl festivities.

In my opinion, the mangers and planners of this event were very
successful in choosing the ultimate hot spot for promoting Super Bowl XLI. This event obviously took a tremendous amount of thought, effort and careful planning. Overall, the success of this perfect pre-game party will not only bring in a fuss about the Super Bowl, but it will also give big name companies the chance to sell and market their product and potentially bring in future revenue for the NFL and for their companies.

Turner thinks strong schedule will turn around NBA ratings” vol. 9 issue 38 page 12

I agree with this article completly. The NBA wants to start having higher tv ratings by having games on set days of the week and even on Sunday. I feel by having games on sunday will allow alot more viewers to tune it to the games.
In comparison to the NFL the Sunday games really are a big thing. These games are promoted on NBC and fans look forward to therse games. Sunday night football has a very high tv ratings and the NBA has the potential to do the same thing. NBA on Sunday will have great ratings for the simple fact they play more games and this allows more viewers to watch more and more each week.
The NBA is on the right track to gain viewers attention by making this very intellegent move.

"Dolphin Stadium adds events space" vol. 9 issue 38 pg.24

I agree with what the Dolphin Stadium is doing. Since they are adding more space (total of 360,000 square ft. of concrete floor), they will add many facilities that will help bring the stadium more revenue. They want to add resturents, party rooms, concession stands, and extra seats. With the new renovations to the stadium like the seating, this means more tickets can be sold. Not much informantion about the project is being released like what they excpet in revenues. Civic leaders are hope that all the work that will be taking place will help the stadium become a regular site for the superbowl. I believe that if the staduim does all these renovations it will being more attention to it and will be a great consideration for the superbowl, because of the new stadium and the weather.

"Overall ratings drop doesn't worry RSN's vol. 9 issue 38 pg. 4

Over the past half decade ratings for Regional Sports Networks have continued to climb each year. This trend came to a halt this year with eight of the top ten RSN's experiencing a decline in rating. The reason that most people are not worried is because the ratings are still very high compared to 5 or 6 years ago. I agree that this small drop is not a reason to become overly concerned because all types of television ratings fluxuate from year to year. There was also an increase in ratings for networks located around the Detroit Tigers and San Diego Padres because they were successful for the first time in years. Although many of the top RSN's did not increase their ratings, other previously unwatched networks grew in popularity with the new success of their local teams. This shows that the Regional Sports Networks are followed by local fans who become more interested when their favorite team is winning.

"Turner Turns to 'Entourage' Actor" Volume 9, Issue 38, Pg. 11

Jeremy Piven, a star actor on the hit show, Entourage, will headline NBA playoff commericials this season for Turner Sports. I believe adding Jeremy Piven to the line-up of commercials to promote the playoffs is a very good step in the right direction for the NBA. The NBA has not been doing well with ratings for the past several seasons and needs a boost. Using Jeremy Piven will not only be appealing to the traditional NBA fan, but also to the non-traditional fan because of his personality and comidic appeal.

This is a very different angle that Turner Sports is using to get people once again, involved and excited for the NBA Playoffs. I think the NBA will see a boost in its television ratings due to commercials like this. Using this type of marketing is intelligent because people appeal to actors such as Jeremy Piven.

Turner turns to 'Entourage' actor Vol.9 issue 38 pg 11

Turner Sports and the NBA are using actor Jeremy Pivens to adertise for the upcoming All-Star game and weekend. Pivens is an Emmy Award winning actor from the hit show on HBO "Entourage". His characters name is Ari, and he plays a savay Hollywood agent for an up and coming actor. He is one of the more popular characters on the show. This is why i believe Turner Sports and the NBA chose him. They want him to play a passionate fan instead of the agent he plays in his hit show.

Piven is set to appear in 5 different commercial spots that will start airing this week. He will also have help from big name athletes such as, Lebron James, Dwayne Wade, Kobe Bryant and Vince Carter to name a few.I believe his personality and acting style are a good fit for his role in marketing the event. The companies are not only targeting basketball fans, but they have bought radio spots on rock and country stations as well.

High Profile signing may put spotlight on firm Volume 9, Issue 38 pg 13

This article is about firms and the signing of huge college prospects in this years up coming draft. The article starts off talking about Jamarcus Russell and Brady Quinn and which will be drafted first. Personaly i think that Brady Quinn sucks i think that he is overated and with out coach Weis he wouldnt of even been on the map. Every big game that Notre Dame played in they lost. I honestly dont care who goes first but i would hate to see a team spend all the money on Quinn and he sucks. The article also goes into who else Lockl,Metz and Milinovic. They also have Anthoney Waters, Dwayne Bowe, Sidney Rice and Paul Williams. LMM reoresents about 50 players in the NFL draft. One of the select firms that represnts a dozen of first rounders. If i was getting drafted i would sign with Drew Rosenhaus because if he can get TO in a team anything is possible.

"Entourage" is one of the most popular shows on television. Personally, it is my favorite show. It airs on HBO and features Hollywood agent Ari Gold, played by Emmy Award-winning actor Jeremy Piven. Recently, TNT has chose Piven to star in their commercials promoting the NBA All-star game and the NBA playoffs. Piven will feature in five, thirty second commercials. He will not be playing his popular television character, but he will simply be himself. Piven is a great choice to promote these events. He is a very popular actor and a huge basketball fan. I look forward to seeing these commercials.

The Stadium Consultants International organization along with the NHL has come together to not only benefit the NHL and hockey in general, but the hockey in the United States. With the NHL going south to states that are not used to the sport, they need a way to popularize the game. This organization make it economical for communities to build rinks for the public to use. This popularizes the game, but also creates more players. With youth hockey in America growing, the chance for more young stars increases. Along with popularizing the game we can dominate it.

”Lightning owner considers sale option” Vol.9 iss 38 page. 3

For me it’s interesting to read about the reasons why the teams in America are sold and sometimes move from one city to another. In Europe the teams are sold from time to time but you never move the team. The team can change owners but never location.
I can understand the reason that the owners want to sell the team is because the team is losing a lot of money if they don’t go long in the Stanley cup playoffs. At the same time I can’t understand why they want to sell it because the Lightning is now ranked as the third team in the NHL in attendance per game.
For me it’s a bit strange that you want to sell a team only after a couple of years. There should be ways to make the team profitable.

“Turner thinks strong schedule will turn around NBA ratings” vol. 9 issue 38 page 12

I agree with Turner Broadcastings decision to put games on Sundays and on other certain days of the week. On Sundays I have nothing better to do than watch different sporting events. Usually during the week I don’t have the opportunity to watch the NBA so by putting the games on Sundays I might be able to actually follow the season for once and get into the games. I feel like their decision will help bring more fans to the game of basketball.

"Turner thinks strong schedule will turn around NBA ratings” vol. 9 issue 38 page 12

From a personal stand point, I believe that the NBA will never reach their TV ratings that they would like. The majority of the NBA games that are on TV are on at the same time as other primetime television shows. There are numerous reality shows, game shows, other sports and weekly TV series that the NBA is competing against. The NBA is not exciting enough to attract viewers away from their daily shows they watch. The NBA is also competing against college basketball. I personally can sit down and watch a game of college basketball because it is just that much more exciting. I believe the players are playing with alot more heart and the games are more competetive. The college atmosphere in which the games are played in are very energenic, the NBA atmosphere is the exact opposite

The NBA tries to set up the schdule so that they usually have good match-ups on TV. These match-ups can easily be altered by an injury to an all-star player or maybe even a losing streak by one of the teams. One game that has become a rivalry over the last couple years, and has had me interested in watching is the Los Angles Lakers vs. Miami Heat. Having been played on Christmas Day the last couple of years, it is one of the most anticipated match-ups of the year because of the Kobe Bryant vs. Shaquille O'Neal feud. This year Shaq was injured and did not play in the game. Shaq's injury was a big lose for the ratings of that particular game, due to one person not playing. When people found out that Shaq was not playing they had no intent to watch the game. The only time the NBA will get outstanding ratings on games will be the All-Star Game or the NBA playoffs. Other than that I don't think the ratings will be in any type of incline within the next few years.

This is good for the sport because he is bringing a much diverse group of fans into the sport of NASCAR. Juan has such a great international impact in today’s world. It can do nothing but help shape the future for the sport.
Juan may not be a young athlete but he is sculpting the direction that NASCAR must take. Expanding to other parts of the world will help the sport take flight and flourish in the future. Juan Pablo is doing something great for the sport that no other NASCAR driver has ever done before.

"NHL, SCI make rinks easy for municipalities" Volume 9, Issue 38, Page 9
The Dallas area has seen a high increase in ice hockey participation since the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas in 1993. Because of this increase in demand, the Dallas Stars organization has begun working with Stadium Consultants International to help municipalities build more ice rinks to accomodate these new hockey players. I think this is a great idea for the Dallas Stars organization and also the sport of ice hockey. More rinks will allow more young kids to participate in the exciting sport of hockey and this will ultimately create more fans of the NHL. I think more NHL organizations should follow this example and help parts of the country to develop the sport. Ice hockey has the potential to draw incredible crowds because of it's high intensity and excitement. My hope is that more rinks will begin to appear all over the country and make the NHL and ice hockey the most popular sport in the U.S.

"Overall Ratings Drop Doesn't Worry RSNs"

I was surprised to see that regional sports networks ratings dropped. I was also surprised to see that they were not concerned about it. I understood a little bit that it was due to the rise over the past five years, so it was due to level off or drop at some point.
I liked the idea of putting other events such as high school sports on tv. I know that I personally would be more inclined to watch things such as high school basketball than regualr news shows. I think that other people at least in this area would also enjoy seeing some local high school sports. It was also interesting to see that the price of ads went up, though ratings went down. That seems to be quite unusual. As a Red Sox fan I was glad to see that NESN was still king.

Making a dual championship t shirt would be really beneficial to them because people will buy the t shirts. It doesnt happen very often that you win a national championship in more than one sport in the same year.People are going to want to remember that so they will therefore buy the shirts. Producing these shirts will be more costly but will payoff in the long run. I being a florida fan would want to buy one of these t shirts. The gators with there fan base shouldnt have a problem selling this product. AS far as the logo being made, the Gator logo will sell itself.

"Man in Black still brings in green" vol 9, iss. 39 pg 1

After recently discussing Sports Marketing in class, this was the perfect article to read revolving around sports marketing. Dale Earnhardt's death was a huge blow to all NASCAR fans and non fans. This respected man was the staple piece for NASCAR and had huge sponsorship from Chevrolet and GM Goodwrench. Now, all of these organizations will benefit greatly from the upcoming film, "DALE."

The release of "DALE" is coming out this month with great timing. This movie is the perfect lead into the NASCAR season and is bound to be viewed by NASCAR fans with great anticipation for the season. The film will also allow show casing for such company's as Anheuser-Busch and Tissot and Checkers/Rally, companies are purchasing sponsorshop for upwards of $500,000. Althought this is a documentary, creators are hoping to bring in 7 million viewers. With sponsors continually rolling in, "DALE" is bound to bring in generous revenue for the producers and will fire up NASCAR fans for the season.

I believe that NASCAR and the producers are playing their hand wonderfully. Every sponsor will get a piece of the profit, whether it is Checkers distributing collectible cups or CMT airing the documentary for ratings. NASCAR fans are fanatics, and Dale Earnhardt was one of their favorites. In the fan's eye's, this will be a film commemorating Earnhardt's life.

I chose this article because I believe the new movie "Dale" will be a a good marketing tool for NASCAR while showing respect by honoring Dale Earnhardt. I agree with what NASCAR is doing to enhance popularity in the sport and give the fans something else other than a race as a form of entertainment.

Dale Earnhardt was pretty much the face of NASCAR during his shortened career. I think that NASCAR has struggled to find a marketable driver to fill in Earnhardt's shoes. They're attempt at using Dale Earnhardt Jr. hasn't worked as well as they had planned. Through the movie they can show younger fans the impact that Earnhardt had and still has on the sport. The movie, which will show in each city a few weeks before the Nextel Cup Race goes through that city, will generate money and excitement in the upcoming race.

“Beckham signing has AEG considering Home Depot renovations” vol. 9 issue 39 page 13

The signing of the amazing David Beckham has got a lot of people’s attention in America, especially AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group). They are planning to add seating and a lot of renovations to the Home Depot. This could attract a lot more people and also a lot more people could attend the games. Since a lot more people will probably be coming to the games since the soccer hero David Beckham will be playing there, I think this is a very positive idea. They have thought about adding right suites at the top of the 27,000-seat stadium. Although, this work will not be done by the first home game in the second week of April so as of now there are no plans to add more suites. I think that if they thought about this a lot earlier it could have been a really beneficial to the sport industry if they went on to pursue it. They would of got a lot of publicity and would of probably profited from this because the number of people attending soccer games will increase now because of David Beckham and people wanting to see him. Therefore if they can have more people in the stadium they would make more money.

"Man in Black still brings in green" vol.9 iss.39 pg.1

I decided to read this article because Dale Earnhardt is my all time favorite driver. I still remember watching the race were he hit the wall and died. Anyone that was a NASCAR fan could not believe tat the "Intimidater" just died. While alive and even now you can not go to a race without seening a shirt with his name on it.
I believe that its a great idea that they will play the movie before each race. NASCAR is increasing its popularity. I also believe that Chevrolet and GM Goodwrench should be the biggest sponsors of the movie since he did sponser them all those years. It is nice that other companys can also sponsor this movie. I believe that this will be a big hit for NASCAR fans and maybe someothers as well. I know I will be watching it when it come to theaters near my house.

I have selected this article because I feel that the movie “Dale” is a terrific marketing idea for the sport of NASCAR. This movie will not only bring in a large amount of revenue for Dale Earnhardt’s recipients but a lot of attention will be directed to the competitive sport. Chevrolet will also greatly benefit from the exposure of their brand name in the movie. Now, there is truly a face of NASCAR, but unfortunately he only exists in the memories of fans. Overall, this article clearly displays how popularity of and individual competitor can bring in so much revenue and exposure.

"NBA's golden getaway" Volume 9 issue 39 pgs 1,32

I feel like the NBA’s decision to hold their All-Star game in Las Vegas is the wrong one. They call it “Sin City” for a reason. Former Basketball greats like Charles Barkley have come out on the record and said that they have gambling problems. Barkley even admitted to losing millions of dollars in a span of a couple hours after a gambling spree in Las Vegas. Even Michael Jordan the greatest player of all time has lost a considerable amount of money in the casinos. If by some chance that Las Vegas is able to acquire a franchise I couldn’t see anything good coming from it. There wouldn’t be any fan base since most people who go to Vegas are there for a couple days and then leave. If the do get a franchise I agree with the NBA in there decision for all Vegas Casinos to take NBA games off there list of games to be bet on. That way there wont be another Pete Rose Situation in the NBA

"Loge expectations: Colleges plan new premium seating"
vol. 9 issue 39 page 7

Everyone wants to increase their revenue. The professionals have found many ways to increase their revenues and they are lending their ideas to the colleges. Colleges are adopting the idea of adding in midpriced loge boxes into their new and renovated venues. They feel this will help bring in more revenue for their stadium. These loge seats will consist of four high-end swivel chairs, flat-screen televisions and counter space with many other things. These seats will cost lesser than a suite. I feel this is a good idea but only to particular schools. If the school is not a very successful school in their sports such as basketball then people will not pay the extra cost to rent out the loge seats. People will not rent out these seats if the school has a terrible basketball team. Parents or other types of people may but not many. I feel these seats could definitely help schools bring in more money but if the plan doesn’t work what will they do with the seats. If no one decides to rent any of these seats out they will lose out on money. What will they end up doing with these loge seats that they spent the extra money on to create is my question. I think these seats could definitely be beneficial to a school that is popular and that has a popular team that many want to watch. Some schools will have a club lounge behind these seats where premium-seat holders can drink beer and wine while they watch the game from their seat. I think many people will enjoy the idea of this so the venue will benefit. In my opinion these loge boxes will sell but only to those particular schools.

"Nets will hit suite market around Labor Day"
The New Jersey Nets have a new arena that will be opening for the 2009-2010 season that will cost $525 millon dollars. The Barclays center will seat 18,000, and is estimated to have 170 suites in the arena, almost 140 more than that have at their current home, the Continental Airlines arena. Some of the new suites at the new arena are estimated to cost $463,000 annually.
Team officials say that they will begin marketing for the suites sometime around labor day, but say that they will wait to begin marketing for long term sponsorships due to the fact that most of their 100 deals with corporate sponsorships will end in the 2008-2009 season.
In January the nets held their first summit, which is a meeting with all officials dealing with sponsorship, and 50 of their corporate partners were there, including NBA commissioner David Stern and Rutgers football coach Greg Schiano, who were guest speakers at the event. Mainly the summit was focused on the teams business objectives for the years to come, and on how all their partners would be able to meet these objectives.

"Arrival of Offseason Means Owners Will Go Back to Work on Prickly Revenue-Sharing Issue"
Vol. 9 Issue 39 Pg. 31

This article talks about the biggest thing in sports, money. In the NFL, they have revenue sharing, which allows low market teams to still compete with the larger franchises. The section starts off by mentioning two teams, the highly profitable New England Patriots, and the not-so-fortunate Buffalo Bills. Patriots owner Robert Kraft stated that he didn't believe in revenue sharing because teams like the Bills could generate more profit by doing things such as selling their name rights to the stadium. Bills owner Raulph Wilson, for whom the stadium is named after, said he didn't want to sell the naming rights because he felt it would somehow take away from what he tried to create in Buffalo. Kraft also stated that he would be in more support of revenue sharing if teams showed at least a little effort in trying to help themselves, such as selling their naming rights. I am not really sure where I stand on the idea of revenue sharing, because I can see and understand both sides of the story. I mean, I don't think that teams like the Patriots should have to give their money away to help their opponents just because they can't get enough fan support. On the other hand, how can one expect a team like the Bills to compete when other franchises can spend twice the amount of money that they can. It's an ongoing debate that is there in almost every professional sport, and I don't think that there will ever be a solution where all the parties involved will be satisfied.

"Man in Black still earns green"
Volume 9 Issue 39

I think this is movie turned into a Goldmine by Marketing this movie so heavily. This movie was just suppose to be about the Real life and Biogrpahy of Dale Earnhardt.Because Espn tried to make one on him about fake charactors and wasnt really that big of a hit. But now that its real and never seen before clips people will definatly be tuning in to watch this. Nascar is one of the most popular sports in world and only getting bigger.
So by Wrangler,GM,Goodwrench,Checkers and etc to sponser this is huge. Because so many people will be watching this movie. Just not Earnhardt and Nascar Fans, but many sports and country people around the world that know about him. So This is a Big step in Marketing their product or company by sponsering this movie.

"Man in Black still brings in green" vol. 9 Issue 39

Dale Earnhadt was probably the most known NASCAR driver at the time of his death almost six years ago. There will now be a documentary created that will tour with the Nextel Cup season starting in February. I think this is a great way to commemorate his death and also bring publicity to the NASCAR circuit. The movie will be more successful because it is being shown where the races are about to happen so NASCAR fans in the area will want to see it. Showing it during the weeks before an event is a great publicity tool because it will also help create excitement about NASCAR. Chevrolet and GM Goodwrench are the co-sponsers and will get great exposure during the movie tours. It cost about 2 million dollars to make however the exposure these companies will recieve will be worth it. Overall this movie will help promote the sponsors and NASCAR while commemorating a legends life.

MLB,clubs near resolution on video-on-deman rights; settlement being drafted Volume 9 Issue 39 Page 4

Major League Baseball and individual clubs are trying to resolve the video on demand dispute. Teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers have used VOD, and are getting in trouble for it. Some believe that MLB as a whole should not use video on demand, while others think that if you bought your team, and the market area you should be allowed to own the rights to a product in that market. Many are angered that it is taking MLB so long to decide what to do about this aspect, because spring training starts in a week and it is prime time to start advertising.

I feel that video on demand is an amazing option for fans, I think that you should be able to watch a game that you want to watch in fast forwar or rewind, if you pay for it. This is an option that has the posibility of gaining a larger fan base if worked out the proper way. I do however realize the other side of the equation. FOr teams that are not as popular as lets say the Los Angeles Dodgers, they are going to have a tough time keeping the fans that they do have, if the fans have to start to pay to watch games on t.v.

Overall this option can go either way, I think that teams should be able to make their own choice about this problem. Or at least be able to have a trial period to see if their fans will stick around or leave.

"Sponsors place their bets on Vegas activation" Volime 9 Issue 39 pg. 32

With sponsorship backing the NBA All-Star weekend at a all time high, sponsors continue to pour it on. More and more companies are sponsoring events, promoting items, and telecasting commercials to give them an edge on their competitors during athletic events. I believe using the all-star weekend to do so is smart.

The NBA isn't the most popular sport in the country but the All-Star weekend is practically a sport inside the sport. More people who aren't "fans" of basketball will tune in to see the dunk compition this weekend than watch a regular season game. To top it off, it's being hosted in Las Vegas. This being said companies and sponsors obviously saw the oppurtunity and went with it this year. A domnino effect took place, companies didn't want to miss this action . As for future All-Star weekends, I do not see it as being as built up of one as this one in Vegas.

Dale Earnhardt, the face of NASCAR, died nearly 6 years ago, but his legacy still lives on. This documentary film will tour along NASCAR during the whole season jumping from event to event. I believe this is a very smart marketing decision for Chevrolet and GM Goodwrench (Earnhardt's longtime sponsors). Not only will this movie commemorate a great driver in NASCAR, but will also commemorate a great person. They will include rare scenes, photos, interviews, old family videos, and outtakes. This will be very interesting to fans, because it will go into all aspects of Dale Earnhardt's life, making it very desirable for NASCAR's fan to buy a ticket and see it for themselves.

The movie "Dale" will be very successful, because it will be in the areas of races prior to the actually event. This will target the consumer by making the movie available to them during that time. By them showing it before the upcoming event, it will create a buzz in the NASCAR atmosphere and is also a great publicity strategy. Overall, I believe this movie will be very successful for NASCAR and the co-sponsors. It will draw more attention to the sport and commemorate a great man. It's a win-win situation.

I selected this article because just like the Movie “Ray” it allows the world see what went on and how this person lived. The movie will also allow people like me to see what goes on in NASCAR racing. They way that there going to be able to market this movie will also allow the sport itself to grow. There will be a lot of ways for people in the NASCAR world to be a part of this and to also market there teams. This will be a hit because when watching NASCAR you never know what goes on behind the scenes. The movie will allow people to see event that happen up until the race starts. The movie will also allow fans to see probably one if no the best race car driver ever. The people that will benefit the most will be Chevrolet, GM and Good wrench. I have already seen commercial scenes not necessarily portraying the movie but NASCAR and Chevrolet has about to commercials out.

"Gators' Two Titles Mean New Logo" By Michael Smit, Vol 9.Issue39 dont know which page,I ripped it out.

The University of Florida is already in the top of the nation's sports merchandising. Now that FLorida has conquered two of the nation's most popular sports, and in the same year, they will start start conquering sports sales. To label yourself not only "National Champion" but now, "National Champioins" speaks in bold terms. Not only have the Florida Gators become even more of a powerhouse, but both sports will be able to contend next year with the returning talent and upcoming recruiting class for "back-to-back" Champions.
As Far as the revenue side is concerned, I agree it's going to be hard to determine the profit on merchandise with just even the new intrest in the program, like the new genral fans of the University. They will profit on the new logo but, they will also profit on the normal "Gator Gear." Personaly, I find it amazing on the unbudgeted amount of revenue they will recieve on top of what they already planned.

"Sponsors place their bets on Vegas activation" Volume 9 Issue 39 pg. 32

I chose this article because I agree with the move the NBA is making by holding this year All- Star weekend in Las Vegas. Sponsorships levels are at an all time high this year and they are continuing to rise. More Companies then ever are telecasting commercials, promoting items, and sponsoring a large number of events this year. I feel this years promotion strategies are as strong as they have ever been. They have rating sky high and I feel this is a smart move. Las Vegas attracts people as it is; now they have another reason to come and join the fun.

The NBA isn't the most popular sport in the country but All-Star weekend is a big deal. In comparison to the Super Bowl; you don’t have to be a fan to go to the Super bowl. If you want to see some excitement and just being able to say you were there is important to a lot of people. So All- Star weekend is full of people who aren't fans of basketball but enjoy all the activities and excitement that comes with the weekend. They like to see the dunk competition, the shoot outs, the rookie sophomore game, and now they can even go to a casino or two. This game carries a lot more excitement and energy then a regular season game. Companies and sponsors saw the opportunity and took full advantage of the opportunity. Companies didn't want to miss this chance for revenue so they put their hand in the plate. As for future All-Star weekends, I doubt that they will be as hyped up as this year’s game in Las Vegas.

"New Venues bring needed change to Europe" by Paul Romanuk vol.9, issue 39, pg.21

the article was about the stadiums in europe for the soccer leagues. the stadiums were horible and didn't even have enough seating for everyone and not a lot of food or no food at all. now they are building new stadiums, like this one for the Arsenal, that havemade a lot of changes for the better. they now have luxury boxes and lower level boxes and seats for eveyone. they make sure that decent food is available for everyone and the luxury boxes have a few bars and your choice of resturants that serve foods from cheessteaks to white-cloth table settings with delicios food. i think that this will attract many new consumers and satisfy everyone, also the owners of the consessions will profit greatly with a new venue to serve in.

The University of Florida will be looking to create a new logo in honor of there dual championship year. Both the football and the men's basketball team won national championships in 2006.This was the first time ever that this has been done. To honor this the University wants to come up with a logo that willbe put on various items of Florida apparel. Graphic designers within Florida athletics and Collegiate Licsensing Co. are working hard to come up with something appropriate. I think this is a good marketing stratigy for the school. It could produce not only money, but it could also look to gain more fans, as well as high school students who would choose the University without thought before.

"Dew Tour to rely on athletes in the TV booth" vol.9, issue 39, pg.7

The Dew Tour is a pro tour made up of action sports and is sponsored by Mountain Dew. The Dew Tour is similar to the XGames. The two long time commentators have recently been fired and are going to be replaced by current or recently retired athletes who participated in the events that are scheduled during the event. I believe this can do no harm to the fan base, if anything it will increase the number of viewers. I say that because being a commentator for an extreme sport has to be really hard if you have not participated in it before, therefore by hiring these current athletes, the audience will be able to know exactly what is transpiring. What I mean by that is the commentators will now know the exact name of a trick being done. In the past, I remember watching a BMX trick competition and there were numerous times that I knew the name of the trick being performed and the commentator said the name of a totally different trick.

I think that they should be a little cautious when picking the new commentators, they should make sure that they have the ability to communicate with the viewers, but at the same time give the viewers the extra incentive of what is going on.

“X Games head eyes globalization”
I enjoyed this article it talked about where the x games stands in the present and where they plan to be in the future. At the moment the x games are on the subject of globalization and thinking of how to expand their franchise. The x games are already the leader in the action sports industry. They saw on opportunity to broaden their franchise to other parts of the world. This is a big opportunity to become a bigger franchise than they ever expected.
I feel the x games are heading in the correct direction. Expanding to other parts of the world can mean only good things for them. Their types of sports are popular anywhere in the world therefore by going global it will be a great outcome for the x games. The x games will flourish greatly if they do decide to expand globally. In the future all the great franchises and companies will have to face globalization to stay on top of their competitors.

"Fox's ad lineup nearly full for Daytona" vol. 9, issue 39, pg. 4

With last years Daytona 500 becoming the most watched race in Nascar history, that's all television marketers needed to make paying $500,000 per 30 second ad that much easier. Also, with 90 percent of the 8 month racing season already sold out even before the first race is also boosting television ad sales. Retail clients have been investing in the ads for the Daytona 500 because it is one of the only events guaranteed to get a rating higher than any other event until the next NFL season starts.

Although I am surprised to see such a high fan-following of Nascar races, I am not surprised to see ad sales increasing year after year. More fan interest means more marketing interest. Fox is also proving that Nascar races lead to higher baseball ratings. Advertising a game that is scheduled to follow a race has a positive effect on the amount of viewers for the game. I think this is a good strategy because people are obviously watching the Nascar races and also watching the ads.

"Sponsors Place Their Bets on Vegas Activation" Volume 9 Issue 39 Pg. 32

I am in no way surprised to see that sponsorship is very high at this years NBA allstar weekend. Though the popularity of the NBA isn't as high as it is in the past, the allstar weekend is usually a big event. I personally enjoy watching the slam dunk contest and 3 point shoot out more than a regualr game and I think a lot of other fans feel that way as well. Also the fact that this years game is in Las Vegas makes it all the more attractive to sponsors.

Las Vegas is a very good place to have such an event like the allstar game. Large numbers of people will want to be in vegas for the game even if they dont have tickets because there are many other things to do there. This will make events in and out of the arena very attractive to sponsors. Also the game should draw a large TV audience which will make TV sponsorship also a hot commodity.

"Man in Black still brings in green" vol 9, iss. 39 pg 1

The death of Dale Earnhardt marked a significant moment in NASCAR history. As one of the most respected and beloved drivers ever to come by NASCAR, fans will never forget him. As an attempt to draw attention to NASCAR, as well as to rekindle memories of his life, a documentary called “Dale” is expected to bring in 5 to 7 million viewers, both fans and non-fans of NASCAR. Hopefully, with help from Dale’s past big name sponsors, Chevrolet and GM Goodwrench, along with Anheuser-Busch and Tissot and Checkers/Rally, new fans will be drawn to this years NASCAR season.

The release of “Dale” just before the upcoming NASCAR season was an excellent strategy of the sports marketers that worked on this project. Both sponsors and NASCAR will benefit greatly from the timing of the release. New and old fans will not only be hyped up for NASCAR to start, but will also remember Dale Earnhardt and the significance of his contributions to the NASCAR industry.

The U of florida won the national title in football and basketball the past seasons and there school is looking to make money off of it. I think it is a good idea with what they are doing even though it is hard for me to write this because i am a florida state fan but if my team were to win 2 national titles i would love to promote and wear something that everyone could see that my school was the first to win national titles in 2 sports at the same time. it gives you a sense of bragging rights to be the first to do something and i agree with the U of florida taking advantage of this opportunity.

“Fox´s ad lineup nearly full for Daytona” Vol.9 iss 39. page 3

It is incredible how much some companies pay for a 30-second spot in Daytona and other sport events. I wonder if the big amount that they pay, really pays of in the reality. The price is so high and the human brain can only remember 700 something commercials. Of course when you have your commercial in one of these big sport events you reach out to a lot of people and it is an easy target to find if that’s your segment.
It is a lot of money and the demand is so high that the price are probably just keep on rising and I am uncertain if the money is worth it.

Beckham signing has AEG considering Home Depot renovations
Volume 9, Issue 39, Page 13

I think if the Galaxy were to expand their Home Depot stadium in time for when David Beckham’s comes over to the states it would be great for the team as well as the sport of soccer in the USA. I have always said if America wanted to be and put some effort into increasing the popularity of soccer over here then they could be one of the best countries in the world. This I believe is purely down to the population available to choose from and also the facilities on offer to people to play sport all across the country, this added with the fact that the majority of America’s population from a young age play soccer and then quit at high school could equal your country being another super power in soccer along with England.

They always say "what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas". Well sponsors are hoping to disprove that old saying with the NBA All-Star game this coming weekend. Sponsors are pouring alot of money in to this event. There are events that are alot bigger, but it is said that no event creates more of a buzz than this one. Alot of companies are launching new products at the event. These include T-Mobile, EA sports, and Nike's Jordan brand is releasing the Air Jordan 22. Toyota is also a major sponsor of the event, as well as Gatorade, McDonalds, Sony, and many others. I have not always known the NBA All-Star weekend to be very popular. I, myself, am a very big basketball fan but do not usually find myself watching. I hope that this year is different. With all the money being invested in the weekend and with the attraction of Las Vegas, I hope that it brings in big things for the sponsors.

"Olympic glory helps Winter X fly higher" vol 9 issue 39 pg 1

The Olympics has placed the otherwise unknown Winter X games on a larger map and introduced sports such as snowboarding to a broader audience. I think this is good for sports which would remain obscure and it gives fans more possibilities to see sports which would be unavailable to them on a regular basis. Sports networks have been helped out by the Olympics adding newer, modern events also because it brings in fans which would not normally tune into these games. I hope the IOC continues to modernize its efforts in becoming a more diverse and favorable entertainment possibility. This will allow other events such as the Winter X games to flourish and boost their ratings from year to year.

"Premium blend: Hallmark works with HOK on pauley project" vol 9, issue 41, pg 14

Michael Hallmark, an independent architect, has been hired to help HOK sports to renovate UCLA'S arena which was built in 1965. His goal is to find space for club seats and hospitality space. He has also helped renovate the continental airlines in arena in Newjersey and also american west arena in phoenix. The dolphins are also in the process of renovating. They want to add field level suites, which would generate alot of revenue but cannot until the marlins, who they share the ballpark with, get one built.
By modifying these facilities it could generate alot of revenue and interest. The seahawks have field level suites in there stadium and they sell them for 130,000 a season. Thats alot of money coming in. We already know that people are willing to spend the money on the suites so you cant go wrong with these renovations. Also if your arena is newly renovated or brand-new people are going to want to see the finished product so that is also going to create revenue.

“AFL says season worth the wait” vol. 9, issue 41, pg 6.

The Arena Football League will kick off the 2007 season a little bit later than it is accustomed too. Last year, the season started on Jan. 26, but this year the opening games will take place March 1st. The reason for the late start this year is due to the fact the AFL was negotiating its new television deal with ESPN. This will replace NBC as the AFL’s partner. League Commissioner David Baker doesn’t mind the season starting more than a month later though, because he believes in the notable changes made during the AFL’s off-season.

Baker believes that his new five-year deal with ESPN, regional cable deal with Fox Sports Net, sponsorships of Russell Athletic and Discover Card, and possibly landing an agreement with Sirius Satellite Radio, will only benefit and continue the growth of the AFL. I agree with David Baker that switching from NBC to ESPN is a great move for the league. It will attract more people by the unique ESPN commercials and more games will be broadcasted by the station. ESPN expanding more and more into HDTV will also help increase viewers across the nation. I also think it’s good that the league started a month later than normal, now that the NFL is in its off-season, diehard football fans can tune into the fast and exciting version of football. So the NFL and AFL won’t be competing with each other and the ratings will be high for both then. This article is very good, because it shows how the AFL has grown in a short amount of time and how it is going to affect the sports industry. The major effect it will have on people is the expansion into new markets. The AFL has currently 19 teams in the league, but they want to their goal is to eventually grow into 32 teams. Possible sites for new teams include; Washington, D.C., Miami, St. Louis, Houston, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh. This is very positive for the AFL and if they keep growing the popularity and revenue should also be on the rise.

"AEG deal helps Devils' arena build buzz of its own" vol. 9, issue 41, pg 1.

New York is the home to several different teams, and the majority has older stadiums they call home. However, the New Jersey Devils will soon be playing in a $375 million arena. Newark’s new eye candy, the Prudential Center, is a spectacular attraction and wonderfully constructed arena. Anschutz Entertainment Group is looking to invest a great deal into the Prudential Center and intends on bringing in 50 extra shows a year. This increase will help the Devils pay off the stadium quicker and with less of a burden to tax payers. This stadium represents what T.J. Nelligan, president of New Jersey Sports Marketing, says New Yorkers have been missing out on for the past several decades. This new stadium is even bringing in several reliable sponsors and is teaming up with Red Bull Park to work out concert package deals. When designing the stadium they took into account concerts would be held there and the quality is great. There are also restaurant deals coming into play that will help the city economically, because they will be open even when events are not being held.

I feel that the alliance with AEG was the best move that the Devils could have made. This is simply because they can book entertainment easily to this stadium and both AEG and the Devils will profit. It seems as if this deal will fit as well as the Yankee's deal with their television station. Also, cooperating will Red Bull Park to put indoor and outdoor packages together will be very appealing to fans and artists. There was worry that Newark is a bad area, but I feel that fans are fans no matter where the team is, and they'll make the journey to see their favorite team. The restaurants, club seats, and simply the design of the stadium is magnificent and that the Devils will benefit greatly from this new arena and AEG deal.

"Cordish wants to enshrine eatery near Hall of Fame" vol. 9 iss. 41 pg. 5

This article is about how The Cordish Co. is renavating different NASCAR eateries. They built a NASCAR Sports ille by the entrance of the NASCAR Hall of Fame. I believe that this idea is great. I think that many people will eat there because of having a NASCAR theme. It was an intelligent move on Chevrolet's racing manager Terry Dolan by placing Chevy banners on the roof of the Hilton Garden Inn. Many people were about to see the banners and was able to beseen from the race track. I do not know if it's a great idea for Gulf Oil to be a sponsor for NASCAR, since they are only located in the north-east section of the United States. There are other companys that have not made it into NASCAR sponsorship including JetBlue Airways, Puma, and Nike. I believe at some point Nike or some other shoe company will be involved in NASCAR.

“AFL says season worth the wait” vol. 9, issue 41, pg 6.

The article talks about how the AFL is starting a month later than usual because they signed on with ESPN for a broadcasting deal replacing NBC. I believe that this move will help the league gain many new fans and help the league grow leaps and bounds. Everyone one in the country who watches sports mainly tune into to ESPN for there sports fix so there ratings are only going to go up. Leagues like the NHL that have gotten rid of the agreements to broadcast there games have suffered tremendously. The article also talks about the possibility of brining an expansion team to Pittsburgh. Even though Pittsburgh has the Penguins and the Pirates, Pittsburgh has been and will always be a football town. I think that the people of Pittsburgh would embrace a second team and they would be able to get there football fix while the Steelers aren’t playing.

"ESPN going all-HD for 7 sports"vol. 9, issue 41, pg 7
E
SPN is now going to show all NFL< NBA,MLB,NASCAR,MLS, college football, and national hot rod association all in HD this year. 150 out of 400 college basketball games will be shown also. I think this is a good idea and really eventually all television shows will be in HD so it doesnt really surprise me but I think viewers like it better when games are shown in HD because you can really tell the difference. If i had to choose between watching a game in standard def and HD i would definitely want to watch it in HD. Games are much clearer and the camera angles are a lot better too. overall i think this is the best move espn is making and will make customers happy.

“EAS provides a healthy start for Quinn’s endorsement career” vol. 9, issue 41, pg. 10

The first NFL draft pick and Notre Dame’s current quarter back, Brady Quinn, has his first endorsement deal with Abbott Nutrition’s EAS supplement’s and he will appear in print and radio ad’s. Obviously he is a great athlete and by him appearing for the Abbott Nutrition’s EAS supplement, their sales will probably rise. When people see that he’s advertising their products, it will probably be a step forward for the company. I think that this is smart of the nutrition company, because he is obviously a catch in endorsement deals and is starting to be well known. At the super bowl in Miami, he made appearances for the NFL corporate sponsors of Burger King, Spring and Visa. All this extra exposure for Quinn and the companies is a positive step because Quinn is getting recognized publicly, getting paid, and the company’s sales will most likely rise.

ESPN has some new ideas that then plan on following through with this up coming year. They plan on showing all NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, MLS, college football, and national hot rod association all in HD. 150 out of 400 college basketball games will also be shown in HD. HD is High Definition and facts prove this to be clearer and have better angles then the standard stations. A lot of people have HD televisions and I feel this will take over all TVs in the near future. I think this is a smart move because viewers already prefer to watch games on HD then they do regular stations. They can tell the difference and this is what they prefer. Like I stated eventually all television shows will be in HD, so why not start early. I myself have a HD television and I rather watch sports in HD then on a regular station. It makes you feel that you are right there in the stands while you are at home watching. So in conclusion, I think this is a smart move for ESPN; they will please their consumers and attract a lot more viewers. More viewers bring in more revenue so their in a win- win situation.

AFL says season worth the wait... Volume 9, Issue 41, Page 6

The AFL has made the decision to start their season one month later than last year. The reason they have made this choice is because they have recently switched from NBC to ESPN for broadcasting. I think that this is a wonderful idea, over the past when AFL was with NBC their ratings have dropped. Switching to ESPN is going to open doors for the AFL. ESPN is the most watched sports network on TV. The AFL has been around for 21 years but I think that their popularity is really going to take off within the next few years b/c of their decision. THe AFL is alos looking into adding a few more teams in the next couple of years, one being in Pittsburgh. I think that this is a good idea because Pittsburgh is in need of a change, pitt fans are behind the steelers, and I think that indoor football will go over well in Pittsburgh.

“Soccer team is leading national export” vol. 9, issue 41, pg. 9

As many of us know, Brazil is most widely known for their amazing soccer talents. The national team has brought in much money for the country. Because they help bring in alot of money many others are hoping to try to benefit from the country. I think this is a good idea for those that need the money because Brazil will help bring in a lot of money due to their popularity. Last year Nike used Brazil's national team's phrase "Joga Bonito." It gained much popuarity for Nike. International companies are even trying to gain exposure from using Brazilian soccer. I think this is a good idea because it's only bringing in money for both the Brazilian team and the companies so everyone pretty much benefits. Even American companies such as Pepsi and many other countries have used Brazil's team to benefit. I think its a great opportunity for companies to benefit. By using the Brazilian soccer team it will help them gain a great deal of exposure because of their huge popularity over the world.

"NFL moves China Bowl to avoid Olympics gala" vol. 9 iss. 41 Pg. 8

Recently, the NFL moved a game between the New England Patriots and the Seattle Seahawks that was scheduled to be played on August 8, 2008. The reason why the game was moved: the Beijing Summer Olympics, which go from Aug. 8-24. Now the game will be played the next day, August 9, to make it easier for all parties to deal with the game's opening ceremonies. I think that this is a good move by the NFL. They are giving way to something that is alot bigger than just an NFL. The olympics bring people from all over the world and lets them compete, putting all other petty differences aside. However, I think that the NFL made the change for business and financial reasons as well. The game, which will be televised live in the US at 8:30am, would have lost alot of ratings and viewers to the Olympics. The only reason the NFL is playing over there is to try to get professional football to a new fan base, and to get more people interested in the NFL, but that cannot happen if all of the people are watching something else. I believe that this was a good move by the NFL.

"Premium Blend; Hallmark works with HOK on Pauley project." vol. 9 iss. 41 Pg.14

UCLA plans to go under major renovations with their stadium and they call on two of the best designers/archetics in Pauley Pavillion and Michaels Hallmark. Since the building of the arena in 1965, no upgrades have been done. They plan on expanding seats and creating more box seats for allumni and fans. Hallmark has the ideas and knows what he is doing considering he helped the Pheonix Suns and New Jersey Nets to do the same. He helped the teams create new revenue by turning normal seats into box seats which brought sponsor space and more money per seat. Dolphin Stadium is too considering upgrades to bring box seats closer to the field. This will only happen if the Marlins get their own baseball field.

These are good business moves by the teams and their arenas but at the same time bring up some problems. One problem would be that while you are adding more seats the cost per ticket will rise and some fans may be turned away. Another problem is that you are bringing more people closer to the field and players, raising a security risk for the athletes and fans but at the same time the people who are willing to pay that much for such high quality tickets arent the ones who usually are causing problems and getting kicked out of arenas. So I say. go ahead with the new renovations, overall it is going to bring a better experience to the fans and the game.

AFL says season worth the wait” vol. 9, issue 41, pg 6.
This article is about how the AFL league will start a month later because of a new deal they acquired. The Leagues commissioner David Baker doest mind that the season will start later. I wouldn’t mind the change because with all these changes the AFL will be on TV more because of ESPN broadcasting there games. The deal that that was signed was for about 5 yrs. I think that changing the leagues start date is good because this allows cities that have a AFL team and also a NFL to be able to watch both with the NFL ending in late January early February because of pro bowl allows fans to see both teams play. The AFL only has 19 teams right now its goal is to have 32. And one of the cities on the map for one of those teams is Pittsburgh. I think that it would be good because we don’t have an NBA team and this team may pick up the slack of those terrible pirates they should allow the team to play in the at PNC park put a dome on it and sell the pirates they would probably sell more than them. I just think its exciting to bring more venue to these other cities especially right after the NFL Season

"Planned $450 million Braves sale faces scrutiny"
In less than two years Major League Baseball has scored one major transfer of franchises, and is potentially looking at number two with the Atlanta Braves are looking to transfer from Time Warner to Liberty Media. Just to be sure that there will be no major changes in the Atlanta Braves staff such as general managers and all the executive positions commissioner Bud Selig said that the situation will be looked over extrememly carefully. In addition to liberty Media trying to acquire the Atlanta Braves they are working on getting Direct tv and the rights to the mlb package of extra innings.
Even though talks are heating up the deal is far from being finalized said a highly placed baseball official, and he also said that it is going to be difficult to pass it due to the fact that Liberty Media has many other assests including a gambling info site.
The Washington Nationals deal a year ago worked out great for them, as well as the Boston Red Sox a few years ago, so in my mind there is no reason why this deal wont get passed. But the commissioner and other officials need to look over the situation closely to make sure that Liberty Media is trying to acquire this for the right reasons, becuase if they are not it could lead to bad situations for the MLB in the future.

"ESPN going all-HD for 7 sports" vol.9 issue 41 page 7

The title of this article pretty much explains what it is all about. The seven sports that ESPN will go HD in are NFL, NBA, MLB, NASCAR, MLS, college football, and a portion of the 400 college basketball games they cover. I believe this is a very good idea for ESPN to do this. ESPN is the biggest sports network on television now and has been for years. By expanding the amouth of HD televised games and shows on their network, they raise the bar for other networks to compete with them.

More and more households are purchasing HD televisions, therefore they want to be watching HD shows. It is now easier for ESPN to purchase all the equipment needed for HD because the companys now stop making cameras, trucks, and switches for standard def TV, so now the prices of the HD equipment is starting to drop drastically. Now ESPN has the capability to give people who enjoy watching sports, the feeling that they are actually there watching the events in person. I can relate to this because I have an HD TV and the quality is so much better than basic def TV. Now that ESPN will be doing this type of coverage, the purchase of my HD TV was well worth it because I mostly watch ESPN.

"ESPN going all-HD for 7 sports" vol. 9 issue 41 page 7

ESPN is going to increase its High Definition coverage to all 7 major sports venues so that all coverage of these will be in high definition. College basketball will not have every game broadcast in high definition howevever it is scheduled to have 150 out of 400 games broadcast this way. This is the highest amount of games for any sport, and is a good way to high light the best matchups. I think this is a great move for ESPN and that it will help with their viewers ratings. I know that I would rather watch a High Definition game than one that is being regularly broadcast, and may even watch worse teams if it is much better quality. Although it costs more to produce, the networks said they wanted to reduce the confusion of people trying to figure out which games are going to be broadcast in high definition and which are not. I think this will help increase the interest in ESPN broadcasts because everyone will know that the games will always be hi-def broadcasts and be able to rely on good quality. People who pay for high-def televisions want to watch these broadcasts so they will be able to count on ESPN giving them what they want. This should ensure that more people will tune into ESPN daily to check for HI-DEF broadcasts.

"Sources: Cable isn't going into extra innings" p3 vol. 9 Issue 41

It talks about the MLB Extra Innings station and how the cable industry is trying to match DirectTV's bid but without having it be exclusive. Cable also promised that it would have the same amount of output as MLBs planned channel. HOwever, MLB is expected to announce it's planned 7 year contract for $700 million deal with DirectTV as early as this week. The cable industry would only place the channel on it's expanded basic teir while DirectTV would place the channel on it's Total Choice Package, and MLB has been stead fast about limited tiering.
I think that this isn't a good idea to do this. Because more people have cable today vs. satellite. This channel will only be available to DirectTV customers and leaves out those that have cable who would love to have the channel. And those cable customers just to get the channel would have to switch to satellite. I view this to be a poor marketing strategy for the MLB. I think they need to think of the fans who would love this on cable without the worry of having to switch to a satellite provider. And even though there are issues with what channel to broadcast on a cable network, I believe they need to work on the situation more than just allowing DirectTV to resell it because it's the easier route.

"Block stays as Connected as he can with DC Shoes' consumers" vol. 9 issue 41. pg 34.

The DC shoes brand is trying to reach out to more unique sports. I can understnad why they are trying to broaden their sports. As they said in the article, now a days kids arent only in one sport. They can play multiple sports, because the sports fall in differnt seasons. I thinks its interesting how sport marketers in this company have to not only think of new and up to date trends in the market, but for this brand they also have to make sure it flirts with the noncomformity. The article also brings out how if you are trying to sell a certain item, you need to "rep" it yourself. You need to show the person your are trying to sell the imtem too that you also support it, that if its seen in public that its not looked down upon. For example how Ken Block wore his jeans and a t-shirt with his DC shoes when he was tryin to sell them, rather then a suit and tie, selling sports shoes.

"White cans Dew, flies to Red Bull" vol.9 issue 41. pg 1.

Olympic Gold Medalist Shaun White has switched his beverage endorsement deal from Mt. Dew to Red Bull. The new deal recently signed with Red Bull reportedly calls for 7 figures annually for White. Even though this is a lot of money to invest in a twenty year old kid, I still think it is a good move for Red Bull. The market for energy drinks is growing as more and more products enter the picture every month. I think the younger crowd will be able to identify with the drink when they see Shaun Whites picture on it. According to the Davie-Brown index, 1/5 of consumers know who Shaun White is. The only other extreme sport athlete ranking higher is Tony Hawk. I think the money involved will only drive up the asking price of athletes in the nba, mlb and so on. I think it is very important for companies who market extreme athletes to recruit the popular individuals because there are only a few that an average American can relate to. This will give Red Bull a big advantage in the extreme sports marketing area.

"Soccer team is leading national export" vol. 9, issue 41. page 9.

This article is basically talking all about Brazil. All the sporting events that go on in Brazil and also about the sports and sporting events they are trying to make bigger and more popular in their country. Basketball is a sport that in the 80's it says had mass increases in popularity - their are talks that the NBA have been in talks with the BBC to try and organize a "Basketball Without Borders clinic" in the summer. It then goes on to talk about how Brazil are trying to host the 2014 FIFA World Cup which is probibly the one sport they do not need to increase popularity as they are widely known even by people who don't know much about soccer as being one of the powerhouses in the world of soccer. This comes with good reason as they were the first team to win the World Cup 5 times, making them and Italy the most successful teams on the world stage. This was the whole point of this article how it was saying the Brazil National Soccer team is the main earner and export for the country of Brazil.

"Flow of video challenges property rights" vol. 9 iss. 41

The nhl has made a great move to attempt the new wave of video technology and show games on streaming video. The NHL has a contract with the internet company YouTube to show taped games to the public for no charge. This is perfect if you want to re-watch, unable to receive game, or missed the game and want to watch it. The only problem that it take about 10 days for the video to be available to the public. Many other sports corporations have also begin to try this online video movement but find a non-profit move un-ethical. The NHL needs this for a different reason though. The struggling league has lost good television contracts and fan support after the 2004 lockout. Instead of taking the corporation way out of just taking a big payout from the original television source, ESPN, the NHL found it better to go after the fans. The NHL gets my thumbs up on this move.

Shaun White is a huge name in the snowboarding industry. I think it was a power move on the part of red bull to sign this giant. They claim that red bull offered him a seven figure deal for a course of three years, I feel many people would have gave Mt. Dew the can. I think that this is a great move for red bull is shows that they are in the big leagues now with all the other beverage companies. They have been gettin there name on a lot of different things these paast years. the other sponser they gained which i found very impressive was with nascar. Red bull has been doing great it seems and i think they have been making great steps in the direction of success. I think they are targeting the right crowd with the different peope they are picking to join there team. I cant wait for the red bull flugtug event in nashville this year it is going to be a great trip.

White had previously been Mountain Dew’s big star in regards to marketing extreme sport athletes. With the signing of Shaun White Red Bull now have the three biggest action sport athletes in the extreme sport realm. The decision to sign and invest in Shaun White is the best move for Red Bull to make especially in competitive field of energy drinks. White will definitely appeal to those who play extreme sports mainly because White is a multi sort athlete and can be recognized by all types of action sport athletes. Also, because White is only twenty years old he is seen as a role model and is the most popular action besides Tony Hawk. The more success Shaun White has in the action sport world, the more endorsement deals will come his way. This was his third deal he has signed to since wining the 2006 Winter Olympic Gold medal for snow boarding. The future looks very promising for Red Bull Company thanks to their sports marketing director.

"Sources: Cable isn't going into Extra Innings" vol. 9 issue 41 pg. 3

I am upset to see that DirecTV is about to get a contract for seven years as the sole provider of mlb's extra innings. This package offers all major league baseball games, so that subscribers can watch their favorite team even if they are in a different market. While I have DirecTV and already subsribe to the NFL Sunday Ticket (football's equivelent of the Extra Innings package), the competition created if both cable and DirecTV had the package would force prices down.
DirecTV already has exclusive rights to the Sunday Ticket, hence the price goes up every year and you have other options unless you are willing to sacrifice watching all of your teams games. Which as a loyal Dolphins fan, thats something I'm not willing to do. The only games I don't watch on TV are the ones I attend in person. Also because of the exclusive rights to these great sports packages, DirecTV is raising their prices for basic programming because people who whish to have these sports packages must subsribe. This is a great thing for DirecTV, but a terrible thing for sports fans.

This new deal brings in 7 figures annually for White. Although White is only 20 years old, Red Bull had made a smart decision in choosing the second most popular extreme sports athletes, following Tony Hawk. The demand for energy drinks is quickly growing as more and more of these products enter the market. I think younger crowds will be able to recognize White's face when they see it on the front of Red Bull and want to buy the product. The signing of Shaun White as the new face of Red Bull was not only a great marketing strategy for the company, but for the extreme sports market too.

"ESPN going all-HD for 7 sports" vol. 9 issue 41 page 7

HD TV is becoming very popular. ESPN plans to cover all of their games from seven sports all in HD this year. The only sport sport that it will not cover entirely in HD is NCAA basketball. However, 140 out of the 400 NCAA games will be in HD. That is still the most HD games for one sport that will air on ESPN.

ESPN is switching over to HD because they say the ratings are much better. Last year the games in HD got higher ratings than the games that were not. Although it is expensive to produce telecasts in HD, the costs of equipment are coming down rapidly. Last year it is said that consumers were confused as to whether or not games were in HD or not and that is another reason for the switch. Personally, I can not tell the differenc and I don't think it is a big deal. I feel that since it does cost more, it is a waste of ESPN to do this. Fortunately it is not my money so I will enjoy that it will be all in HD and hopefully I can notice a difference.

"AFL says season worth the wait" vol 9 issue 41 page 6

The Arena Football League(AFL) season will begin more than a month later than usual this year after the league was finalizing it's TV contract with ESPN. This new five-year deal with ESPN replaces NBC as the league's national partner. I think this new contract will help to promote the AFL throughout the United States because ESPN has become possibly the most watched network for sports. The AFL needs to gain popularity in order to compete with the four major sports in the NFL, MLB, NBA, and NHL. I think the release of the new Arena Football video game will also increase fan base for the AFL because new younger markets will have their interest sparked in this up and coming sport.

ESPN going all-HD for 7 sports
issue 41, vol 9 page 7

ESPN is going to be showing seven different sports in high definition tv this year. They plan to show the NFL,NBA,MLB,NASCAR,MLS,College Football, and the National Hot Rod Association. This interesting thing about this is that they will not be showing College Basketball in HD. Even though college basketball had planned to get the most HD televised games on the slate. HD tv is rapidily spreading through the United States with over 9 million people veiwing broadcast on ESPN in HD. Ratings for games in HD are higher than of regularly televised games. Although it is costly to broadcast the games in HD, ESPN says that they will be able to cover it with the ratings. I think this is a good idea personally. I love to watch games in HD and the more games i can get the more i can watch. I think people will watch these games, and even if you do not have HD you know somebody who does and will want to watch the game in HD.

This article is based upon the Red Bull New York soccer team. It starts off by talking about the new marketing and sales manager Andrew Lafiosca who is trying to promote his soccer team along with the energy red bull. They were promoting red bull by giving out free samples on the street to encourage people to drink there prosuct. They are now talking about using the same method to bring in people for their soccer team. By demonstrating the game of soccer by offering amateur soccer players in a team to play against community teams and too show off their skills infront off adults. They are basically trying to promote the MLS so by increasing crowd sizes. Which I think is a pretty good idea as with money comes the ability to buy better players and also improve the schools of excellence which in all will offer younger people in the States to play soccer.

"MLS sked spreads Beckham around Galaxy visit penciled in for each market in second half" Vol 9, Issue 38, Page 1 and 35.

Basically the article is talking about the arrival of the phenominon that is David Beckham coming over to the states to play in the MLS. It is simply talking about the order of games and wheter he is going to visit all 12 mls states during thr league and that $4million bump would be recorded (on estimate) for each team just for people turning out to see Beckham play. I think its a great thing for soccer in this country, he is as big as Pele in the modern day game of soccer and this will help boost popularity in the states. (or atleast it should).

“Stadiums strengthen their wireless coverage” Vol 9, Issue 37, page 5.

This article discusses the importance of the development of stadiums no matter how modern they are. When the technology rushes forward as it does its important that the stadiums and arenas rush along with it. The most important issue for the organiser of the stadium and events are to keep the audience in the stadium. As long as the audience stays at the stadium they can spend money. To keep them there they have to feel comfortable and have access to everything they need and want.
A person is happy when they have what they want and are comfortable, the use of wireless technology advancements in the modern day are helping us with all off our needs...whether it be losing our children in a 100,000 seating stadium or if someone wants to now the directions to a hot dog stand...by asking someone working at the stadium and having the technology they have these jobs can turn out easiar than they use to be.

"Sports tab swooshes past $2B" Vol 9, Issue 36, Page 3.

This article is talking about Nike and their investments in world sports. It started talking firstly about the rise is Nike endorsements, player sponsorships and league sponsorships grew within 3 months by $350 million. This is a huge increase for one business to incur in such a short space of time, but this is why Nike is one of the biggest and most successful business in the world today. It also then goes on to talk about personal contracts and marketing campaigns such as Nike Jordan, LeBron James and his signature line and also the NFL marketing increase. One of the biggest growers for Nike last year was the FIFA "Soccer" World Cup where they invested heavily into becoming one of the biggest sponsors, not only for individual players but for also many of the teams. This brought in alot of money and helped them with their campaign to be the icon of soccer. There reported expenditure for all their involvement in the FIFA World Cup was around $479.5 million, around a 27% increase from the comparable period the year before.

"Upshaw:Battles of recent players won prosperity" VOL 9, issue 42 page 5

Gene Upshaw, who is head of the players union is getting complaints that some of former players, who are disabled, or living in poverty, are not getting enough support from the players union. But upshaw is saying that he and the players union agreed in 1982 that they would recieve $250 a month and also in 1993 they had agreed to increase the amount everytime they renegotiated the Collective Bargaining Agreement.
I think that the retired players should be getting more money than they are getting now even though they had agreed to it. They probably didnt have any other options. I mean you have so many overpaid players in the nfl wasting all there money away. I think they should be giving a cut of it to the players that made the league what it is today and the nfl should realize without these former players there would be no league.

"Big Ten deal could help finance facilities" Vol 9, issue 42, page 25

Recently the Big Ten and Fox Cable Networks agreed upon a 20-year joint contract, starting in August. This deal will provide the Big Ten's 11 members an aditional source of income that can be used for such things as stadium construction or improvements. Each school in the Big Ten will now be receiving an additional $7.5 million a year along with several million from other broadcasting stations. The assistan athletic director at Minnesota claims that the additional revenue will be a life saver and help finance their new $285 million stadium. Also, the University of Illinois will use some of this money to help with renovations to their stadium.

I feel that the Big Ten schools really lucked out in this deal and have been given a great financial opportunity. Other than helping build stadiums, this money will greatly improve equipment needed and even the weight rooms the athletes use. College football is extremely popular and coupling with the Fox Cable Networks will only increase the amount of games that can be aired and the fan base will thicken. This contract is a wonderful advantage the Big Ten schools now have and they should use this money wisely.

"Russell buys total for Monday night AFL games" Vol 9 Iss 42 Pg 3

Russell Athletic signed a sponsorship deal with the Area football League last October, but are now expanding their deal. They added 2 years on to there on-field apparels and added 4 years of title sponsorship of ESPN2s monday night AFL broadcasts. Russell is trying to increase there apparel. They are trying to do this by having a new ad. I believe that with the new sponsorship deals this will help Russell Athletic. There name is going to be noticed more often on TV and also at the games. I think that this was a good move by Doug Kelly. This will help out their sales in the future.

"Russell buys title for Monday night AFL games" Vol. 9 Issue 42 Pg 3

Last October, Russell Athletic came to an agreement on a sponsorship deal with the Arena Football League. They now decided to expand their critical investment by lengthening its on-field apparel rights from 3 years to 5 years. They also took another risky move by adding a 4-year title sponsorship of ESPN2's Monday night AFL broadcast. Russell decided to come with agreements with the AFL in hope of increasing their apparel market and making their product more marketable.

I believe by having the on-field rights of the AFL, it will re-establish itself in professional sports. The Arena Football League is an up and coming league in the sports market, so by Russell Athletic gaining sponsorship will only benefit the company. It will gain more popularity through billboards, T.V. promotion, video games, and apparel sales. In the end, I believe Russell will profit from becoming partners with the AFL.

"Building toward a record year" Vol. 9 Issue 42 Pg.1

The article discusses the money that will be put into arenas opening and being renovated for 2009. A record 6 billion dollars will be spent on construction and renovation of many arenas, stadiums, and training facilities throughout professional and college athletics. I agree with what the professional team owners and Athletic Directors are doing to spend money on their athletic facilities because it helps get more people into their new building while making it more enjoyable for the fan and a better atmosphere for the players. The naming rights of these new buildings cost companies millions of dollars to get their name put on the building so I can't blame the owners for going the extra step to try to top the newest stadium. I feel fans are more likely to come out to a new arena to see the new features as technology improves every year. The money from sponsors will continue to give the front office of every team the financial flexibility they need to achieve their goals.

“Red Bulls street team will show off soccer” Vol. 9, Issue 42, Pg. 33

In this article, Andrew Lafiosca the vice president of marketing and sales, is now bringing the marketing to the company’s Major League Soccer team. They plan to hire a team of talented soccer players and do exhibitions for young players and impress adults. Their goal is to reach ticket buyers and persuade them to want to come and see a game. Just like before, when the company went around areas and sampled the energy drink Red Bull, their now sampling soccer. Red Bull selected eleven players in the tri-state area to show off their soccer skills and to reach out to people, grab their attention, interact with potential fans, and this will hopefully increase their ticket sales. Because people think that getting to Giants Stadium where they play is inconvenient, Red Bull is hoping to over come their way of thinking.
I think that this is a good idea by Red Bull persuading people to want to come watch more soccer games. By impressing the adults they will want to bring their children to games. Also, if children watch the skills being performed and are entertained, they will most likely want to see a game. If I had to make a prediction, I would think the ticket sales and the attendance rate will go up after the Red Bull team reaches out and convinces the community.

"Building toward a record year" Vol. 9, Issue 42, Page 1, 34

Over the past decade economists have continued to believe that the building boom for sports arenas is going to end. It appears that this will not be happening anytime soon since estimates for the year 2009 and 2010 have gone over $6 billion. This is a 28 percent increase from 1999. I think that annual construction for sports will not necessarily bust but will probably go through cycles. There will be times when more teams have older stadiums and begin to build new ones however there will also be years where very few stadiums are being built. I also think that because colleges are building more elaborate sports facilities this will add to the building industry. Teams will always be trying to build bigger and better arenas and stadiums which means there will always be a need for architects and construction companies. The graph in this article shows that costs of annual construction tend to go up and down each year depending on when teams get funding and decide to upgrade their facilities. Professional sports continue to grow in popularity and as they do newer stadiums will be built ensuring the success and need for this industry.

"New four-year, eight-figure agreement is Anheuser-Busch's longest, biggest with MLS" pg. 9 Vol. 9 Issue 42

It talks about how Anheuser-Busch has completed a four-year agreement covering Soccer United Mareting's entire portfolio, including Major League Soccer, the U.S. national team, the Mexican national team, Chivas de Guadalajara, InterLiga and SuperLiga, the new competition between MLS and Mexican club teams this summer. This agreement is larger and longer than any deal in Anheuser-Busch's 11-year history with MLS.
I think this is a very good idea because MLS isn't that big in the U.S. and having a huge company backing it up it may give MLS a better chance on getting more recognition in the U.S. I think it's a great strategy to do a huge agreement that will make headlines so people know what is actually going on and people who favor Anheuser-Busch may think hm...maybe we should really check this out.

"New four-year, eight-figure agreement is Anheuser-Busch's longest, biggest with MLS" pg. 9 Vol. 9 Issue 42

In this article it talks about how the beer company Anheuser-Busch has signed an agreement which covers the portfolio of the Soccer United Market. This includes the U.S. national team, the MLS, the Mexican national team, InterLiga and SuperLiga, and the Mexican national team. This is said to be a four-year agreement and I feel that this is a great idea. This will help give the MLS more media attention when their name is linked to the popular beer company. As we know the MLS isn’t our primary league here in the U.S., our nation revolves around football. I think that this will be very beneficial to the league and will help let them gain more attention. Many people know hardly anything about the MLS. I think that this will definitely cause a great deal of attention to both Anheuser-Busch and the MLS and hopefully it will help benefit and bring attention to both.

Since 1999 there has been an increase of 28 percent by 2009 the record setting amount will be 6 billion dollars. I think these changes have to be done because the time periods are changing. Once one city gets a new stadium the next team is trying to out do city to have a better facility. Great facilities now can be used for other events instead of say just a football stadium. These owners are eliminating the old facilities and combining everything the old one had and making it all into one huge facility. In I think in some facilities there combining college and the pros together and I think its easier to pay a bill with two organizations the 1. A when a new stadium is built people will go to the stadium just because its new.

"Upshaw: Battles of Recent Players Won Prosperity"
Volume 9 Issue 42 Pg. 5

This article talks about the most important thing in sports today, money. It focuses on Gene Upshaw, a retired offensive lineman. He played for the Oakland Raiders in the 60's, 70's, and 80's. He is an important member of the players association, and one that many retired NFL players look to. The article specifically talks about the lack of pension that retired NFL players are receiving. They want more and feel that they deserve more. Their argument is that they built the NFL into what it is today, and they don't think that it is right that current players are becoming millionaires because of what they have done in the past. Currently, all players who played in the NFL before 1982 receive $250 a month, which is considered by most people not sufficient. Upshaw said that while he played, many of the players had jobs in the offseason to help cover expenses. I feel that retired players should receive more money, because they did in fact build the league to what it is today. Besides, the salaries that some of the players are getting today are ridiculous. If everyone today took a little less, former players, the ones who are responsible for many people having a job today, would be much better off, and I think it would all be for the best in the end.

ESPN near deal for stake in MLL

ESPN has taken an interest in closing a deal with the Major League Lacrosse. ESPN has recently made an offer to MLL and is waiting to see if they take the deal. ESPN has recently taken financial interest in the AFL and PBA. Last year ESPN2 aired MLL on Tuesday nights, and had approximatly 94,000 households tune in.

I personally thing that ESPN is playing the game correctly. They realize that the AFL and MLL are two rapidly growing sports leagues and they have taken advantage of that fact. Lacrosse is not an extremely popular sport I should know I play it. But it has growing potential. I think lacrosse is going to become a major deal in the United States within the next ten years and maybe one day with the help of ESPN, instead of baseball or softball bats, little kids will be picking up a lacrosse stick, a great thing for the sport!

"Schools cheer new branding efforts" Volume 9 Issue 42 Pg. 27

College campuses throughout the country have caught onto the trend that student sections bring in huge amounts of revenue. The example used in this article are the shirts worn by University of Pittsburgh students known as the "Oakland Zoo." As an independent group, the idea of the Oakland Zoo was created six years ago but recently was picked up by the athletic department. This has caught on extremely well and it's difficult to find someone in the student section at Pitt basketball games who is not wearing the same shirt.

Since the popularity of these shirts has grown so much over the years, I think Pitt was very smart to join the efforts of selling and promoting Oakland Zoo apparel. I think having such a popular trend like this is an important part of the appeal of college athletics. I think the uniformity of having everyone wear the same shirt contributes more interest and fan participation. It boosts the college athletic atmosphere and is a very good way to market the team and the college. The Oakland Zoo has recently begun to sell limited edition doll series of Zoo animals. Again, this is a very good way to make more money. I think this is a great idea especially since a trend of this type is rapidly growing in popularity.

Russell buys title for Monday Night AFL games...pg 3, vol 9.

Russell Athletics signed a sponsorship deal with Arena Football last october, and is looking to expand on that investment this time around. Russell Athletics is trying to become more competitive in the apparel market and is looking toward the AFL to give them an edge. I think this is a good idea because as of now, the Arena Football League is new and on the rise in popularity. Its a continuation to the NFL's football season, and with its high scoring, fast paced game, it is sure to bring more fans and new money. The AFL also aquiring new tv spots with ABC makes Russell even more marketiable to different people around the country. Russell once had on the field rights to bigger leagues such as the MLB, but has lost that. They are now trying to regain its professional sponsoring status.

The student section is a huge part of any college teams season, especially in the sport of college basketball. Student at some schools sleep outside just to get a ticekt to the game. Using this demand form students to generate money for the program is a great idea. I think it could even be taken a little further than just makeing t-shirts but to maybe some other gimick. e.g. foam finger or a hat... I think that if you interduce some object that brings unity to the student section it will sell. These products though are not just limited to the student section either, they are bought by lots more people thatare attending the event as well. I cant wait to buy a t-shirt from or corn hole event.

"Big Ten deal could help finance facilities" Vol. 9, issue 42, page 25

In August, the Big Ten and Fox Cable Networks will have a joint contract that will last 20 years. This deal will not only provide an improved income for the Big Ten members, but will also allow these schools to makes improvements in their facilities and equipment. After the contract goes in affect, every school in the Big Ten will receive an additional $7.5 million dollars a year. The contract will also bring in few million from other broadcasting stations.
In my opinion, this contract that was signed will be extremely useful to the members of the Big Ten. Having a contract with one of the most watched television stations will significantly improve the number of fans and the total revenue for the teams. The schools can use the money towards new or updated facilities, weight rooms, and equipment. I hope the tremendous opportunities these schools will be given by the signing of this contract will be taken seriously. I would hate to see the schools spending this money foolishly.

Russell feels they have among the best performance uniforms in professional sport and if that is the case, consumers are going to want to get their hands on them. I think its a great move by Russell by getting there name out there. Russell isnt a Big name like Under Armor, Nike, or Reebok like most athletes and public prefer. But AFL i think is on the rise because people like the high scoring and the more hitting that goes on because of the tight field and walls. So by the AFL getting on ESPN now and Russell being apart of that and getting name out there I think this was a very good move!

"XM-Sirius merger could cost leagues" pg 3 vol 9

With the merger of the 2 satellite radio companies in the future, major sports leagues could end up losing millions of dollars. Sirius has 6 million subscribers and XM has 7.6 million. The major sports leagues are concerned because they will lose money if they come together. In my opinion I think sports companies are going to get screwed out of money because there will not be any "bidding wars" between the 2 companies. I think there really is nothing that the sports leagues can do except hold out on the satellite radio company. If Howard Stern can get a 400 million dollar contract I think that the NFL, MLB,NHL,and NBA should not have that big of a problem though. We will have to wait and see though in the next couple of years. Maybe the companies wont merge after all.

I think that this issue is not very interesting. This is the business world today and of course it could be a revenue lost for the leagues but there is not much they can do about it. If this merger is going through there is always a chance that a new competitor could enter the market. If that happens it could raise the revenues again. One other positive thing with the merger is that the sport would reach out to more people around America and this could increase the leagues revenues through more sponsorship money and so on.

"Schools Cheer New Branding Efforts" (Grace Period Critique)

Student Sections are Big part of High School and College Sports. Ive heard some coaches say that if you have a good crowd it could equal to five more wins. Its helps the perspective schools in the revenue and money department because brings more and more students to the game just because of the atmosphere, so that generates more ticket sales and memroibillia. Students call themsleves different things such as Oakland Zoo, Cameron Crazies, and Izzone. And this sometimes involves wearing the Same Clothing or types of apparel Such as the "White Outs" at Penn State.Which Penn State now has official "White Out" shirts that every student has when they goto a football game. So this generates money which is a good thing to help that program have bigger budgets to buy more things to help there program, which I think helps the Schools do better. The team gets more into the game, generates more money for schools, and brings people together and gets people out and about. So with Student Section this really helps alot of areas which i think is great.

"Adding the numbers"

The top moneymakers in college basketball surprised me a little bit. I knew Louisville basketball was popular, but I had no idea they would be number one. I expected that to go to Duke. I thought Duke was sort of like the Yankees, they have the most fans, but those who don't like them, hate them. Apparently if that's the case, they still don't bring in the most money like the Yankees do. I knew North Carolina would be towards the top, in fact the only surprise in the top 10 to me besides Louisville was Arkansas. I did not think they had nearly as big of a following as other SEC schools like Kentucky and Florida (the defending national champs, who isn't even in the top 25.

The actual numbers surprised me as well. I didn't realize college basketball brought in 21.48 million dollars for anyone. That is better than a lot of major football programs. I was also surprised at the range in the top 25. There is over a 13 million dollar descrepancy between the number 1 and the number 25 schools.

"XM-Sirius merger could cost leagues" Volume 9 Issue 42 Page 3

The proposed merger of XM and Sirius satellite radio could have heavy monetary implications on the revenue which major sports leagues receive from these contracts. Previously, the leagues were able to negotiate a deal by both stations trying to win a contract with the league. Now, with their bargaining chip gone, the leagues will have to settle for a smaller contract which will mean less money to divide among member teams. I am excited about this possible merger as a subscriber to XM radio because now I may be able to listen to all the major sports leagues on my satellite radio. Hopefully whoever owns the station after the merger won't misuse their monopoly power and still offer a fair deal to the sports leagues. I look forward to hearing how this progresses in the coming months.

"Russel buys title for Monday night AFL games."
Russel Athletic apparel signed a sponsorship deal with the Arena Football league which extends its deal from three to five years. Also they have bought the rights to sponsor the monday night AFL games on ESPN 2.
When Russel Athletic got bought out by Berkshire Hathway a few years ago it has been very difficult for them to get back into the market of competitive sports but they are trying their best by hitting up the youth of the United States in the AFL. On the Sunday night season opener Russel Athletic had an ad with a Dallas Desperados player who quotes, "for those who have what it takes on the inside, Russel has what it takes on the outside." With this deal Russel gets billboards, electronic scoreboard advertising, and four commercials on ESPN 2 during the broadcast.
To be honest I personally have never bought any Russel Athletic apparel, and probably never will, but when kids watch the AFL, which is very appealing to them with the big hits, and fast pace, they will think to themselves Russell apparel is the way to go, which is very smart on their part. Even thought they have struggled in the past to get into the market of competitive sports, I wouldnt be surprised if in the next couple of years Russell apparel goes up in value considerably, and finally starts competing with some of the other big names in sports apparel.

"ESPN equity deal would give MLL a boost" Volume 9 issue 42 page 33

The MLL is vastly growing in popularity. They are drawing much bigger crowds each year. For the past four years ESPN 2 has aired the MLL games. This season ESPN will be airing the games. ESPN has done great things for alot of sports. They greatly contribute to the growth of leagues. The AFL, for example, has greatly grown due to what ESPN has done for them. The equity deal they are providing the MLL with should provide them with some much needed legitimacy.

I play lacrosse and love the sport. I am a big fan of the MLL and the U.S. Lacrosse league, which is the sport's governing body. Lacrosse is a very popular sport in the East, but is not nearly as popluar West. I think that ESPN covering this games will greatly spread the popularity of the sport all over. I can not wait to watch these games, and see the impact that this new deal will have.

"New women's soccer league will look to MLS" Volume 9, Issue 43, Page 5.

This article is talking about the new league that is going to be started up for women in the USA. It’s going to be called the WUSA - which is basically going to be made up of 20 matches spread from April to October. The nonprofit organization WSII has been working since 2005 to try and resurrect women’s pro soccer in the USA. Now with the help of 6 initial sponsors they can do this. Some of the sponsors included AEG, Soccer Initiative LLC and John Hendricks who founded the Discovery Channel. Around $1.5 million to $2.5 million annually is going to be needed from each sponsor annually for the league to run each year. This is a lot of money but it is a worthy investment as women’s soccer, not just in the USA, but worldwide needs to start being noticed for the skill and attributes a lot of the players poses.

"Track ready to light up Neon Garage" vol 9, Iss 43 pg 4

Las Vegas Motor Speedway is in the process of renovating there infield which is costing them 30 million dollars to do, and the funny thing is that the track isnt even 12 years old yet. They want to make the track more fan friendly, so in order for them to do that they have built new garages that have floor/ceilings so that fans will be able to watch there favorite nascar team work on there vehicle. They have also built a stage for concerts which will be surrounded by the garages and walls. it will supposively help block sound that is coming from the track. This neon garage that they are building will not only boost revenue for the speedway, it will also give fans a view that they have never seen before. I personally think that this new garage will be great for everyone and its only going to help nascar, It is already one of the most fan friendly sport in america. Its only going to get better. Hopefully more tracks around the country will make there infield more fan friendly like Las Vegas and Daytona.

“Kicking it up a notch: SUM doubling fan development staff” Vol.9 iss 42 page. 5

I think that this is a step in the right direction for the MLS. The MLS has a great product that work in the whole world and I am convinced that it will be a big sport in the U.S. to. Before that ever will happened they have to work hard with marketing and this is a step in the right way. The Hispanic demographics are maybe the right way to go because they have a greater tradition of soccer there. To use old stars is a very good idea because young players look up to these stars.

"MLB Looks for More Women's Sales from Actress's New Line"
Vol. 9 Issue 43

This article talks about a new line of clothing that MLB is trying to promote. It will work with actress Alyssa Milano to develop MLB clothing for women. They feel that there is a big market in trying to sell baseball clothing to women, and they wish to expose that market. However, they will try out these new products at only a few selected ball parks: Yankee Stadium and Tropicana Field which is in St. Petersburg, Florida. I think that it is a very good idea, and will be very successful. MLB is being very intelligent by reaching out to a whole new market.

"MLB Looks For More Women's Sales From Actress's New Line" Vol. 9 Issue 43

This article talks about how the MLB is trying to promote a new clothing line focused towards women. They're going to be working with actress Alyssa Milano to develop the clothing line for women. The MLB thinks that there is a big untapped market to sell baseball clothing to women and hope to expose this market. On the negative side of this positive they're only offering this line to a few selected baseball parks. I personally think that this is a really great marketing strategy. Because I know as being a girl and looking for clothing, there isn't much to select from. Mainly the baseball clothing line is all directed towards men. I think it's also another great plan because it's reaching out to a new market that is currently untapped and i believe this will generate a great revenue for the MLB and also get women more involved in possibly watching the MLB as well.

"MLB Looks For More Women's Sales From Actress's New Line" Vol. 9 Issue 43 pg. 6

This article talks about how the MLB properties have there sights set on expanding their clothing line toward females. Sport clothing line for professional teams did not exist in the early 2000s. However, women's apparel now accounts for about 18 percent of MLB apparel sales. MLB has decided to work with actress Alyssa Milano to help promote a line for women. The MLB believes that this is an undiscovered market in the relm of baseball clothing for women and hope to expand on this idea. I feel that this marketing stradegy will be a success because many wives and or girlsfreinds bond with their men through sports, umoung other things. This iddea will help generate a lot of revenue in the area of clothing sales for MLB. The selection of MLB clothes will have many different designs for women to choose from.

"New women's soccer league will look to MLS" Vol. 9 Issue 43 pg. 5

This article discusses the rebirth of women's major league soccer. There are currently six investors willing to start up the new pro league and plan on owning teams in Washington D.C, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Dallas, Chicago, and a final group looking to the West. The re-launch of this league will depend on support from MLS, such as hosting double headers.

For this league to work, the investors need to realize that the league will not be a success over night. This process takes time, and MLS still is not a highly popular league. This may change will the signing of David Beckham, but each league could possibly benefit one another. If MLS is willing to have double headers with the women's league they could potentially bring in more fans, because they are getting more for their money. The Women's league needs to also work on doing community projects and putting themselves out to the public showing good deeds. When people see professional athletes doing good in the community and helping children or those less fortunate, people will associate these athletes as good hearted and be more inclined to watch the teams. Another way to help this league up there popularity is to get a TV deal so that people can actually watch to sport on television to increase their interest.

"New women's soccer league will look to MLS" Vol. 9 Issue 43 pg. 5

This article talks about how people are now trying to have the women’s major league soccer team become popular again. To do this there will need to be support from the MLS and they will have to host double headers. For this to work there will need to be a lot of time and patience to have the women’s soccer team start up again. There will need to be a lot of support from fans and the team will have to make themselves well known again. To do this, I think they will need to do a lot of advertising, commercials, community service and eventually get their name out there. For example, if the women’s team does community service such as possibly running soccer camps to teach children, or helping the less fortunate the people will see they are giving support so they will decide to support them and come to their games. So far there are six investors willing to start up the women’s new pro league and own teams such as Washington D.C, Los Angeles, St. Louis, Dallas, Chicago, and a group in the West. I think that the women’s pro league defiantly has potential to start up again. This article also relates to sports management because they are going to have to commercialize, and advertise their way to being popular again.

My article was about this ex-Nascar driver that wants money back for playing so hard in nascar. He expects money that he didn't earn. It's clearly understood that people back then didn't make what people make now, but it gives no right for them to try to take what isn't theirs.

I believe that times have changed, you can't change the past. People make the amount of money they do now in order to survive in today's world. Things don't cost as much as they did in the past. Insurance is different and so is social security. I understand that social security isn't that high and it can't pay for the things that you use to have. The key component is that you must think about the money you spend to realize that the future will change. Basically, "Watch how you spend your money".

MLB looks for more women's sales from actress's new line.

Volume 9 Issue 43 Page 6

Actress Alyssa Milano may be the only hope for sales in women's MLB clothing to rise. Milano who is a Doger's fan has come together with G-III Apparel Group, and persuaded MLB Properties to give them a chance to make women's apparel popular. Milano and team have created a line of clothing that will allow female sports fans to still be in style while wearing clothing that supports their team.

I think that putting a face such as Alyssa Milano, an actress on popular TV show Charmed will definetly have a positive impact on the sale of women's clothing in the MLB. Starting this Spring 11 ballparks will begin to sell the clothes. In my opinion the change in the look of women's clothing in MLB in order to allow female fans to stay in style is going to increase the sale of products. I personally would rather wear a jersey that actually fits me than a male jersey that is to big. Allowing women to have the opportunity to wear the clothing to other places rather than the game will not only impress the fan but it will also allow the teams to be marketed!

"New women's soccer league will look to MLS" Vol. 9 Issue 43 page 5

This article discusses the new beginning of women’s major league soccer. Up to six investors are interested in starting the new league. These investors plan on owning teams in Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Washington D.C and another out towards the West. The new soccer league will be dependant on MLS and the hosting of double headers. Although the MLS is not a highly popular league, promoting both these leagues by holding double headers, will possibly benefit both leagues.

In order for a women’s league like this succeed, it must be advertised well. Women’s sports are important to promote and spark interest to in order to gain new fans. Some ways to gain interest in the communities or near by cities of the locations for the new teams, are to have the soccer team members do community and service projects. Anytime the community is involved with the teams, a positive connection is made between the two, helping bring in new fans and interest to the sport. Overall, the success of this new league will take time, but is a step in the right direction for professional women’s sports.

"NHLPA takes leaguewide tour" Vol. Issue 43 page 6

The article discussed how the NHL Players Association has traveled around to meet with all 30 of the NHL's team executives. They are meeting with the executives to discuss ways on how they can better market their players in the local community. The two sides have an agreement stating that sponsors are allowed to use player images in advertisements without having to work out a deal with the player individually.

I agree with the idea of the two sides meeting to discuss the marketing of players. The league needs to market the players better because they are mostly foreign players and Americans may not be able to relate with them due to their different lifestyle. The league also went through a lockout just two seasons ago and they need to do whatever they can to create more interest in the local community. This could have a large impact on the youth fan base by getting out to meet the players, which would be great for younger kids. Also, it could create a large market for gameday giveaways and promotions, which isn't very common right now in the NHL.

"Ticket sales point MLB toward another record" Vol. 9 Issue 43 page 5

Major League Baseball has set ticket sales records for the last three seasons in a row and preliminary reports for next season show the possibility of another record. Last year the league ticket sales reached 76.04 million and although it is early some people are expecting a number similiar to this. The Yankees have the largest yearly attendance in the league and have added even more seating this season. Other teams experiencing recent success also expect an increase in sales.

I think that this is a good sign for major leage baseball because many doubted whether it would recover after the strike during the 1990's. Even if there is not another record set just the fact that many ballparks across the nation are selling out consistantly is a good sign. MLB relys on ticket sales heavily because it does not recieve as much income from other sources. Overall it will depend on how well teams at the bottom of the league sell tickets. If teams such as the Mariners and Pirates have better seasons and more success selling tickets then the league will have a higher total.

This article is about Mike Conley Sr. and that he may be hired by one of the the top agency so that he can help land Oden. But Mike Conley Sr wanted to become an Agent before everyone tried to hire him. The reason that they believe hell be able to get Oden is because he was te coach of Oden in AAU. If this happens this wont be thge first time that a family member would go in the bussiness to help the family out exapmle Major Adams a family friend of Vince Young went in the bussiness and became Vinces agent. Some of the cons of becoming an agent to lure a family friend is that other agents and the media make them targets of criticism. Mike Conley senoir believes that Oden will stay in school another year he said that even with the rule Oden would of went to college still. But Mr. Conley is still trying to become an agent regardless.

Vol. 9 Issue 43 Page 6

The article I chose discussed how MLB is creating a line of clothing for women to sport athletic apparel. The popular actress Alyssa Milano and the G-III Apparel Group has come together to persuade the MLB’s Properties to let them make women’s apparel popular. This will give women an opportunity to wear clothing that supports their team while still looking trendy like a woman. Alyssa Milano and the MLB have created clothing that will suit female sports fans. I think this is a great idea. Most of the time when women want to buy sports teams apparel their usually made for men so their usually larger. Women will not have to wear big jerseys. They will be able to wear clothing that actually fits their body type because the apparel will be made for women. By Alyssa Milano promoting it, I think that this will gain a great deal attention. This will help spread the clothing line and also give MLB more media attention. When it comes down to it I think both will benefit from this.

"One season. One new tag line for NFL." Vol 9. Issue 43 pg 10

In this article, the NFL has discussed and came up with its "tag line saying" for the upcoming season; "Who Wants It More?" This season long thematic saying was unveiled last week at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. This will not be the first attempt for the NFL to launch this promotion, but the third year for this crafty marketing promotion. I believe this is a good tactic in marketing, because there is an increasing support among NFL business partners and the licensees are anxious to become part of the action. By having this thematic "Who Wants It More?" saying it will highlight the competative nature of the NFL players and fans. It will create a positive energy and will really reveal the sacrifice of each NFL team. Sponsors like Coors and Pepsi will benefit by pushing the catchy saying also. In the end, the NFL, NFL sponsors, and fans, will all benefit from this marketing strategy.

"Devils near close of $120 million arena loan" volume 9 issue 43.

New facilities for professional sport teams are the host things in the market. Every team from football to hockey, and all other sports in between have been in search for the money to build a state of the art buildng. The problem is what is the purpose of the new buildings. Teams like the Pittsburgh Penguins and the New York Yankees have out of date structures that are a need to be replaced. But a team like New Jersey is just searching a way to get fans. The devils are close to the bottom when it comes to attendance and the are using the rink to bring in a crowd. So what are they going to do when the rink is old news and the fan numbers go down again. Their are cities in North America, especially Canada, who are begging for a team and would fan bases that would be on top in the NHL.

This article is about Mike Conley Sr., and the offers he has been getting by major sports agencies to try and land Greg Oden. He may be hired by one of the the top agency so that ha can contribute to bringing in of top and elite athletes. Mike Conley Sr. had inspirations of becoming an agent before the offers from majors agencies even came. Agencies believe Conley Sr. has a good chance of bringing Oden in be cause he was his coach in AAU. Some people look down on friends of families becoming agents but this won’t be the 1st or last time this happens. Major Adams a family friend of Vince Young became his agent, Lebron James, Andre Agassi, and many more athletes made this move and had nothing but positive things come out of it. Everyone has their own opinion about this, but it has been done a lot in professional sports and for the most it’s working out for the best. Mike Conley Sr. believes that Oden will stay in school another year to prepare himself more for the NBA. Either way Conley Sr. wants to still become an agent and make the best out of his career.

The Portland Trailblazers have just started a new website that is a team social network site. It is a place were team and fans can comminicate through user blogs, message boards and other site. Since Februaay the site has al ready collect over 3000 members. The site does not allow for tickets saled but more of a way let the fans speak their minds and feelings toward the team, instead of through a e-mail. The team monitors users behavior and profanity but the site is open to criticism.

I think this web site is a great idea for the trailblazers. I feel it is letting the fans feel more part of the organization that they are routing for and express there feeling to someone that might be able to actually respond to their requests. i think this web site could even take this further withsales of team merchandice and maybe even acution off some signiture players jerseys. They said that this site help with the saleof a expensive club seat by promotion on the site. Over all i feel this is a great idea and if monitored well only good things can come form this power move.

“Shell vs. Sunoco: Fuel on the fire”
Kevin Harvick and the RCR NASCAR racing team and their sponsor shell are in a dispute with the official fuel company of the sport which is Sunoco. Sunoco feels that Shell is invading their space in NASCAR. They feel is a violation of the sponsorship deals that Sunoco has worked out with the sport of NASCAR. Shell states that they worked with NASCAR to make sure that they did not violate any sponsorship deals that were already set out.
I feel that Shell has done nothing wrong with their sponsorship of Kevin Harvick. Sunoco just feels threatened by Shells introduction into NASCAR. They are afraid that Shells is on the upward swing in this sport. I feel that this is one of the main problems in sports these days. Sponsorship is taking over that whole concept of the sport. Sponsorship is good but sometimes it takes too much away from how the sport should be played.

"Stanchion advertising graduates to the pros" volume 9, issue 43, pp. 4

The NBA is taking an advertising stint from the college ranks. Now teams are selling a space on the basketball hoop, near the shot clock between $100,000 and $200,000 annually. I am suprised that the NBA took so long to come up with this idea to increase their revenue. This is a primary spot where fans at the games will be looking, and will get alot of exposure. This is easy money for NBA teams. They tend to keep these signs clean and basic, which makes since because these signs are not very big.
The one thing that must be down with this is that the signs must be removed when there is a nationally televised game. This is due to a contract with the leagues national television deal, which gives the stations the sign area for their own advertisment. I belive that this makes alot of since for them to give them the space to the networks because they need to keep on good terms with them. Being on good terms would allow the NBA to get more national exposure to and possibly more TV time.
Overall I think that the NBA will sell any advertising space for revenue and I still can't belive how long it took them to sell the space next to the shot clock.

"Ticket sales point MLB toward another record" Volume 9 Issue 43 Page 1

It is intriguing to me that baseball ticket sales are heading towards another record. I know teams like the Red Sox and Cubs spent a lot of money in the offseason and their fans are excited. But both teams are very hard tickets to come by in the first place. Also I realize all large market teams should be competitive this year. The Dodgers and Angels in LA, The Yankees and Mets in New York, and The Cubs and White Sox in Chicago. But there are teams that I would imagine would struggle to sell tickets.

The Pirates for instance had a peak in season ticket sales due to hosting the allstar game. Yet they are selling tickets at quick pace. This will likely slow to almost a halt in June when the local people realize they still won't be competitive even with Adam LaRoche. Also the Royals spent a surprising amount of money in the offseason, but are still a few years away from being competitive. The depleted and injury prone A's will also probably experience a drop off in ticket sales because they simply won't be as good as they were last year. Another factor that I would imagine would have a negative impact on ticket sales would be the continuing steroid issues. I thought some casual fans would be getting sick and tired of all the cheating going on in the game.

Shell VS. Sunoco: Fuel On The Fire Volume 9 Iss. 43 1 & 16
Kevin Harvick is sponsored by Shell. At the Daytona race he wore a suit with just the shell image. Sunoco marketers did not like this because to them this seemed like Shell was advertising their gas. Shell can not do that because the official gas of NASCAR is Sunoco. For the next race at California Harvick’s suit was changed having a smaller shell image and Pennzoil written underneath it. Kevin Harvick is also participating in a shell commercial that saud that they are not going to change. Shell also started up a program called “Passionate Experts” that will be taking place outside of the race tracks. Since Sunoco is the official gas, Shell can not have their program inside.

I can understand why Sunoco is having such a big problem with shell sponsoring Kevin Harvick. It is said that Sunoco Does not charge the teams in the Nextel Cup, Busch or Craftsman Truck Series for gas. Since Sunoco is sponsoring all of these, no other company should sponsor a team while using gas or any other product that is unacceptable. I believe that the shell marketers knew what they were doing when they made Harvicks suit. I also believe that Sunoco has a right to feel the way they do.

MLB looks for more women's sales from actress's new line..pg6,vol 9,Issue 43

Major League Baseball in looking to gain more from the female market. The league is set to market new apparel to women, and for only women. Actress Alyssa Milano has come up with a new line of fashion that taylors towards the womens needs. MLB officials hope to boost the amount of womens apparel which was basically nonexistent in 2001, and just a little above 20 percent thereafter. The actress has her own line of clothing in which she will get to put her own touch on the clothing inconjuction with MLB. Womens apparel accounts for 18 percent of baseballs licensed merchandise.
MLB seems to believe in Milano's ideas because many other actors and actresses have tried this marketing strategy with MLB before and failed according to MLB officials. Only 11 ballparks will hold the new clothing line as just an introduction or trail period.
I think this is a good marketing move for the league. Its a chance to increase profits from merchandise and also to reach a new fan base. The female market can be huge especially in a fashion merchandise sense because they are big consumers. Men might also be attracted to the new line of clothes to buy gifts for friends, wives, and girlfriends. Not to mention the actress is very attractive as she models her clothing.

ESPNews in HD, Deportes coming to DirecTV" vol. 9 issue: 43

ESPN has announced that it will be starting a new all HD channel. It will be ESPNews HD. They already have a channel that is just espnews but this channel which will be on direct TV will be strictly in HD. I think that the way technology is getting better and better so rapidly that this really comes as no surprise.I would guess by 5 years from now almost everything will strictly be in HD. More and more HD Tv's are being bought along with more channels starting to be now broadcasted in HD. With ESPN announcing it will show its major sports this year besides college basketball strictly in HD only goes to show that the network is definitely moving forward with future technology to give the customer something better and more clearer to look at only making it harder them to change the channel to put a game on that is on CBS or NBC.

"Ticket sales point MLB toward another record" Volume 9 Issue 43 Page 5

There is no better way to spend a summer a summer evening or sunday afternoon than at a Major League Baseball game. No matter who your favorite team is, it is sure to be a great time for everyone. That is why it is no surprise to me that MLB ticket sales have reached record highs the last three seasons in a row. Last year the total for league ticket sales reached 76.04 million dollars. Many teams from top to bottom have made alot of off-season moves to improve their franchises. Although it is still only preseason, many people expect ticket sales to reach even higher than last season.

It is good for baseball that ticket sales have continually been increasing. With all of the controversy surrounding baseball these days, sometimes you wonder whether there are still fans out there. Obviously baseball is not the game it used to be, but it's still a great game. Baseball relies heavily on ticket sales as its primary source of revenue. I can't wait for this season to start so I can contribute to the rise of ticket sale revenue. Look for the Phillies to make a run at the World Series this year!

"Mets Take Their Marketing Campaign Into Yankee Territory"
Vol. 9 Issue 44 Page 5

This article talks about the upcoming baseball season, and some team's new marketing strategy, and in particular, the Mets. The Mets are tryin to get into the same game as teams like the Yankees, as far as marketing and ticket sales are concerned. Once again they are using celebrities such as Jon Stewart and Kelly Ripa as advertising to potential ticket buyers. The team also have a new slogan, "Your Season Has Come," in addition to going back to the team's more traditional colors. Each year every team tries to do something new and different to attract more fans. Some times it works, and other times it doesn't. I think that the Mets are going about it in a good way, especially by going back to their old colors. New York is full of tradition and really enjoys the rich tradition that their city enjoys. I also feel that bringing in celebrities is a good idea. It gives the Mets that look like they are better because they have famous people that cheer for them. All in all, I think it is smart marketing by the Mets and they are going to do very well with ticket sales.

The San Diego Chargers for the first time since 1989 are going to be sporting a new logo and also will be wearing new uniforms for this upcoming season. They said the reason why they came out with the new look wasnt for economic impact, but because they said they needed a new look for this particular group of players that will mostly all be there up until 2009.
I think these new uniforms are ok looking but i prefer the original ones because i hate changes. I think the main reason why they came out with these uniforms was to sell more merchandise. Thats the main reason why teams change there logo or uniform. Hopefully i will get used to there new uniforms.

"Jaguars get two bids for $750 million" Vol 9, Issue 44, Page 1 & 16.
This article is talking about Jacksonville Jaguars and the two offers the majority stock holder received from two people wanting to buy his share in the team/club. It goes on to say that Sal Galatioto who’s is the president of GSP received a financial prospectus from Bill Prescott, who is the majority owner of the Jaguars, stating that he wished to sell his stocks. The debate came between Bill Prescott and the GSP when he denied he stated that in the report. It then goes on to talk about other franchises in the NFL and how often they come up for sale. Teams such New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins are all considered being worth over $1 Billion, but eh most recent sale of a franchise was in 2005 when Zygi Wilf bought the Minnesota Vikings for $600 Million. The whole concept and price structure of franchise sales in the NFL fall down to Supply and Demand. Because of clubs/franchises coming up on the market so rarely for sale prices for the teams boom. The thought of spending $1 Billion dollars on a sports team to me sounds crazy, yes they may be the best and yes they may win lots of trophies and titles but to me prices this high for a sports team is a waste of money. I don’t only feel this way about whole teams but individual players as well. In England some players are considered to be worth £45 Million pounds this in your dollars is $90 Million dollars. I just feel with all the other things in the world that need money and attention far too much is being spent on clubs and players that could be spent on helping others in the world.

"Athletes take stock in online presence" Vol.9 Issue 45 Page 1

The article discussed the growing popularity of athletes and their web sites. I agree with what the athletes and their agents are doing by creating web sites. I like the idea because it isn't very expensive to maintain a web site($15,000-$20,000 annually) and it offers another way to promote and market yourself as an athlete. I also think its a good idea because todays younger athletes grew up with the internet and they will be able to connect with more people that way because they are all familiar with it.

I think this creates a great opportunity for agents to increase their clients market value. I feel the only down side to athletes having their own site is the fact that team sites hits will most likely decrease if people are spending more time on an athletes web site instead. On a web site you are able to run an online merchandise store, run advertisements for companies, and most importantly give fans maybe their only chance at contacting their favorite athlete.

"Goodyear's NCAA advertising plans take flight" Vol. 9 Issue 44 Pg 6

During the month of March, which is known as "March Madness" for the NCAA men's basketball tournament, Goodyear will be doing some serious advertising. Goodyear is sending blimps to eight of the twelve tournament sites during the first two weekends of competition. This will cover at least 30 games for CBS. They predict that the blimps and other aircrafts will accumulate around 5,037 miles during the tournament.

During this time, they will also promote their "Get There" campaign. This will be promoted through commerials, blimps messages boards, etc. I believe this is a very good tactic for Goodyear, because "March Madness" has millions of viewers and by promoting its product to these viewers, Goodyear should generate sales. The slogan “Get There” is also a very good metaphor for the tournament’s journey to the Final Four. The Goodyear blimps are almost like an icon too, because every time you are around a major sporting event, the Goodyear blimp is there also. Therefore, by Goodyear becoming so involved in "March Madness", I believe other companies in the sports industry will try to emulate Goodyear if successful.

"Chargers will sport new look" Vol 9, Iss 45, pg 10

The San Diego Chargers, for the first time since 1989 are going to have a new logo and will be wearing new uniforms for the 2008 season. The reason they came out with a new look is not for economic reasons, or anything negative. They feel for the particular group of players and the age group maybe its time for a new a fresher look. Most of the players there now will be there up until the 2009 season so the feel a new look is needed.
I feel this new look will be good for the chargers. A new look is always a good thing for certain situations. You never know this new logo and uniforms might just be the spark they need to take their play to the next level. The change will cause controversy but what can you do. The new uniforms are nice looking and something that may catch the eyes of fans. The main reason they came out with new uniforms was to sell more merchandise and make it more noticeable in stores. I feel everyone will get use to the new look fast for the simple fact that its new, fresh, and based to all fans of all ages.

Players on top hoops teams can pile up gifts. Vol 9 issue 44 page 8

This article by Adavid Brooughton talks about how the NCAA men and women can pile up thousands of dollars in gifts from there respected conferences, NCAA and there schools. What i found out by reading this article is that Division 1 players are allowed to receive awards from there school simply for participation. Seniors receive about $325 and underclassmen receive $175. Many of the gifts that are received are high tech gifts. The big east conference ordered 568 play station portables for the men and women.

I don’t think that its right the only division 1 athletes are allowed to receive gifts i think all athletes of respected divisions should be allowed gifts. But then again most divisions don’t receive as much money. There allowed to receive up to 26 gifts for making deep in the conference and at D2 all u get is a ring and you may have to pay for it.

"Gillete races into TV" vol. 9 iss. 44 pg. 1 and 15

This article is able a new reality show that is going to be on ABC. It is called "Fast Cars and Super Stars: Gillette Young Guns Celebrity Race." The drivers that are participating are the "young guns" : Kurt Busch, Kasey Kahne, Carl Edwards, Jamie McMurray, Ryan Newman, and Jimmie Johnson. There will be competeing in different competitions, ands the final heat will consist of three celebrity cars.
I believe that this show should be interesting. It is a way for some celebrities to see what it is like driving a race car. It is not as easy as everyone believes. It also shows fans that these celebrities will try something new. The show will help of NASCAR because it will span its fan base since now different people are going to watch the show because their favorite celebrity is on it.

"Nats consider price hike for suites" Vol 9 issue 45 page 4

The article I chose to write about basically talked about how the Washington Nationals are opening a brand new ballpark in 2008 where they plan to raise the suite prices. They plan to charge up to $450,000 for the for the park's largest suite which is said to be reserved for the particular company that buys the naming rights. There will also be additional suites for founders and sponsors which will be reserved for $400,000 a year. The park will have 58 other units which they plan to increase the rates from $150,000 to $250,000 annually. I think that these suites are definitely overpriced. I think it is ridiculous that people are actually willing to pay this fee. The team is already making a decent profit so I don't understand why they are going to increase the price of their suites. They are already expensive and they feel they need to charge people even more. I think they are overcharging people by a great deal of money. Some people have the money to spend on these type of suites but most people don't. I am just curioius to find how many people will actually rent out these particular suites at such a high price. Since the Nationals are located in Washington they have a huge opportunity over many other sports teams because they have a chance to entertain congressmen which is a very big deal. They in a way make it their job to entertain the congressmen. I think this is a great idea to keep our congressmen entertained because they are very important people to us.

Jeep's Deal SIgnals Growing VOD Interest... Volume 9 Issue 44 Page 9

Jeep has recently signed a six figure deal with Video-on-Demand(VOD). For four months Jeep will sponsor programs on VOD such as skateboarding, BMX, snowboarding, skiing and streetball. Jeep will have 15 second preroll spots before the video and several during the video. Jeep is targeting 18-24 year old buyers for their Jeep Patriot which starts at $15,000 and they feel that there is no better way to attract youth buyers then through sports.

I strongly agree that Jeep will gain much success through this deal. Being an owner of a Jeep Laredo, I know first had how reliable the cars are and how great Jeep service is. When I think of a Jeep I think of sports because Jeep's are built for the athletic type, they are outback vehicles that allow you to do much more than the average car. VOD has signed a promising deal for themselves also b/c their name will now be advertised to Jeep owners and they have signed with a sponsor who will not disgrace their name.

"Chargers will sport new look" Vol 9, Issue 45, pg 10

The San Diego Chargers decided to chance things up a bit and have a more distinct identity by changing their uniforms by the 2008 season. They will have three new uniform jerseys one being a navy blue one for home games, a white one for away contests and a powder blue one for select occasions. The reason they are doing this is not for economic reasons but to just have a new positive change. The Chargers will now have the teams name on front of the jersey underneath the NFL equipment logo. I think that this is a good change and will probably attract more attention with fans since they have had the same uniforms since the 80’s. I think they will make more money of selling jerseys and merchandise because everyone will want the new look. This obviously relates to sport management because it’s all about making a new look to get the peoples attention and make more money and the Chargers are changing their look to do this.

"Spot lioght on Sports and entertainment" Vol 9, Iss 45, pg 33

With in this article sport and entertainment are said to work and in hand with one another. The sports world is sought out by entertainers of the world due to sports being such a large market. Sport movies have not only generated more money in recent years but it also gives inspiration to many viewers. One of the top producers of sports movies today is Jack Giarraputo, who had produced "Water Boy" and the remake of "The Longest Yard". Both of these movies have generated two of the three top grossing movies of all time. I believe that the film industry and spots to work very well together, but certain areas of sport should be left untouched and remain sacred to athletes. Not every thing has to be dramatized so much that the sport being displayed is the only thing that matters in life. Other lessons can be taught through sport films instead of just a heroic story about winning. The entertainment world has a good grip on to the sports world and will continue to create films of high revenue generating power.

Players on top hoops teams can pile up gifts. Vol 9 issue 44 page 8

My article is on how Division 1 players recieve a large amount of gifts totalling up to 3,000 dollars for their conference and their school. Seniors can earn up to $325 and freshman earn up $175 for just participation in the regular season. By Law the NCAA will allow 26 gift packages to a school and by it's conference.

I feel as though it's good that players recieve gifts, because in my eyes, the these colleges do nothing but use their players and later care nothing about them and their well-being. I guess since these players have worked hard and earned this opportunity they should be reward since colleges make millions of dollars off these players.
