[Week 1]"New NHL uniforms ready to wear"
V-9, I-37, P-6
This particular article discusses another of Reebok's innovations in the world of professional hockey. As mentioned by a previous user - the article specifically outlines the new "Edge" uniform system and the benefit these jerseys and pants will provide for the NHL players.
Along with promising better protection and improved moisture-management, Reebok also claims the uniforms will mean less fatigue for the players.
The article also mentions that about half of the teams in the NHL have already practiced in the new jerseys, whereas the entire league will be in the uniforms for next season.
The overall look of the uniform is excellent, as it not only claims better protection and moisture-management, but also creats a tighter jersey which will likely cut down on the grabbing from less-skilled, defensive players. It seems as though Reebok has taken the stance to try and create a football-type jersey for use in the NHL. Great move for a great company. To this point, Reebok has basically kept all of the former equipment they've purchased (from KOHO, CCM and Jofa) and simply put the "RBK" logo on it as their own. This is a great move for Reebok, as they are not trying to fix great products by changing everything about them (take notice, Nike).
This is the first major innovation the RBK company has introduced to the NHL, and I believe they have chosen a great avenue for this leap. Whether you're a hockey fan or not, you will certainly take notice to the uniforms above all else.

"Crosby's RBK deal expands to hockey sticks" V-10 I-8 P-9
This article got my attention because right now Sydney Crosby is becoming a very popular hero in this modern generation of ours. It talks about how he has an endorsememt contract for the Sherwood brand stick that is set to expire shortly. Reedbok wants to him as there signature athlete because he is so popular right now. Little kids want to be him.
All you will see on Crosby is Reedbok attire. I like it very much because little kids will see that and then want to buy it at sporting good stores. That is a great marketing move on Reedbok.
"Saints Get the Starring Role in Debuting Visa Ad" V-10 I-19 P-10
This article was about a couple different things in one. One, it was about how promotions and such for the NFL are trying to have the New Orleans Saints take over as America's Team instead of the Dallas Cowboys. I totally agree with this because I for one, am sick of the Cowboys being referred to as America's Team when nobody hardly even cheers for them anymore.
Second, and I also totally agree with is Visa making use of the NFL's popularity and the new popularity of the Saints to market their credit cards. I think it's a great way to get people to get cards.
The last is how visa is giving tickets and other things away to people that use a Visa to buy certain things or sign up for a visa. I think this is a great campaign because who doesn't want to win tickets to the Super Bowl?
"Flyers,Sixers wil give fans a crack at all-you-can-eat seats."
V-10,I-19,P-14
This article discuss how the flyers and sixers are putting together a package of tickets that cover the costs of food and drinks, with alcohol being an additional cost. Comcast Spectacor officials were very impressed with the success of how certain MLB teams marketed these all you can eat seats and are hoping to spread it throughout the five teams that play at the Wachovia Center.
The flyers have put aside 352 seats for their all you can eat ticket package, compared to the sixers selling 932 all you can eat seats. The flyers are selling most of these seats as the last ones to sell for hockey. It’s more of a marketing plan to get more people to go to the games. The way this package works is that when you go to buy a ticket to either event you will receive two tickets. You would receive one game ticket and a second ticket that you later trade at a selected concession stand for a wristband.
How much more are these packaged tickets? Tickets last season for the flyers cost $45.70 without food and drink, now they are $66 and included food and drink. For the sixers they are priced at $26 a game for season ticket hodlers, $28 for groups, and $31 for individual tickets
"Minor League Baseball seeks new president" V-10 I-19 P-10
This article is about going out and finding a new president for the Minor League baseball association. Mike Moore has been the president since 1992 and he is 67 years old. Since he's been having many health issues for the past two years the association feels the need to seek out for a new one.
Mike has done a fabulous job bring in lots of prosperity and popularity towards the league, so whoever gets the job has a lot riding on their backs. The final decision wont take place until December when Mikes time is up.
I agree with the article that Mike has put in his time and has done a good job. The league needs a someone new to make it more diverse and the training of various skills more educational to try to make a difference to the program. The leading candidate is Patt O'Connor and what the article says about him it seems like his resume would be the best suited for the job. He has experience with the league and all that entails with the job discription, so he fits it perfect.
In a year you will hopefully see an increase in the Minor League Baseball association revenues from a new president.
WCSN strikes deal with FoxSports.com
By Tripp Mickle, and Eric Fisher

Published September 3-9, 2007 : 10

WCSN will have their own channel on FoxSports under the "more sports" category. Visitors will also be able to access exclusive sports on FoxSports.com. Financial terms have yet been discussed between both parties. The article also talks about the 2008 Beijing Olympics, mainstream sports looking to increase their olympic offerings, WCSN will help FoxSports.com meet their demand by sharing exclusive videos. WCSN has joined forces with yahoo, AOL, Break.com, and others. WCSN has had triple the amount of visitors do to the teamup with yahoo.
"Flyer, Sixers will give fans a crack at all-you-can-eat seats" V-10 I-19 P-14
This article discusses how the Flyers and Sixers are adding all-you-can-eat seats after seeing how well they went over in the MLB. The all-you-can-eat seats though are the seats that don't sell very easily. Ticket prices will be marked up, but one can eat as much as they like with alcohol at an additional cost. Each person who buys a ticket for these seats will get a game ticket and a second ticket where you eventually exchange it for a wristband. Comcast-Spectacor may eventually expand this program to the 3 minor franchises they run.
I really agree with this idea. People in this county love to eat. If these are seats that don't normally sell, they will now. People will be thinking they are getting more for less. The prices don't seem to be too much of a difference. The Flyers appointed this program to 352 seats. The seats were $47.50 without food and now will be $66 with food. The deeper thinking I see behind this is that eventually more and more seats can be appointed to this program causing ticket prices to be raised. This will then benefit the sports teams and arena because more revenue will be brought in.

"ESPN Sports introduce U.S. Women's Soccer 2.0"
This article is related to the topic that we covered in class today. We discussed international sports and how sport managers try and get athletes from different countries to come to the US to help boost the popularity of that sport. This article discusses how ESPN is trying to promote the Women's World Cup soccer series. this campaign is trying to attract viewers to watch the women's soccer cup. The series is in China this year and it is also starting when football begins and when baseball is winding down. This might make it a little difficult to get people to view it. By featuring a few players on the team and letting the US become familiar with these faces will help the women's world cup soccer become more popular and more people will view these games. It helps encourage Americans to support their country and also gives the women's soccer team a positive vibe and bigger fan support.
I definately agree with this article. I am happy that Seth Ader is trying to help promotoe more of the women's sports and trying to get the whole country involved. I think this ad could be very effective, especially towards soccer fans and females.
I think this article could be very good for the sports industry. Not only is it trying yo promote a women's sport but its also making it more interesting and more appealing to people. It more people watch the soccer games, it will become more popular and create more profit to the soccer industry.

Players Inc. stays 'Real' with new round of ads
V-10, I-19, P-12
The NFL players association is prepping to launch it's next installment of REAL. REAL is a behind the helmet look into what NFL players are about outside of the game. The concept is to portray the players along with there interests and have them explain what the word "REAL" means to them. The seven players picked for this years campaign are Champ Bailey (CB, Denver Broncos), Larry Johnson (RB, Kansas City Chiefs), Maurice Jones-Drew (RB, Jacksonville Jaguars), Roy Williams (WR, Detroit Lions), TJ Houshmandzadeh (WR, Cincinnati Bengals), Adalius Thomas (LB, New England Patriots), Trent Green (QB, Miami Dolphins), and Jeff Saturday (C, Indianapolis Colts)
I believe this is a great idea for the NFL, especially as of late all of the things that have been going wrong in the NFL such as the Michael Vick case, the Pacman Jones issues, the Cincinnati players, to the Minnesota love boat scandal. This shows fans and people in general that not all of the players in the NFL are bad and most of them have lives outside of football just like the rest of us. Lots of players stay active and out of trouble and with all that has gone on in the NFL lately it's hard to understand or believe that, so I think this look into the players personalities will do the NFL a great justice with providing them with a sense of normalcy.
I just think they should have used more players than just the seven chosen. The amount of trouble that has occured in the NFL out weighs that number greatly and I just think that more than seven players should be showcased each year.
I would like to respond to the saints ad. It was intersting that they got that being how explosive their season was last year. Hope they do better this year! Go Saints

“Will Nike let Federer walk away?”
V-10 I-19 P-4
It seems like World's biggest sporting goods company is considering whether they are going to make a contract with the greatest tennis player on this planet or not. Nike always has been contracting with the most attractive, in terms of marketing, athletes in the world. They were just a small shoe-making company before they find the ‘air’ Jordan. Now Nike has contracts with Lebron James in basketball, Tiger Woods in golf, Ronaldo in soccer and so on. So maybe Nike wouldn’t accept their rival Adidas to take Federer away from them.
At the same time, Federer wants more money with the next contract. He now has a giant agency company IMG on his back, so it is for sure that he is going to demand higher amount of money.
Sponsoring a player nowadays is one of the most important marketing methods for both the companies and the players. So far I think Federer looks good in Nike headband.

"More NFL coaches are acting like CEOs"
This article is about how coaches of today are portraying bigger roles in respctive teams front offices. The artcle uses like Mike Shanahan from the Denver Broncos to dicuss their the journey from being just a coach to important "figure head" in their teams front office. Shanahan started his journey as assistant coach with the San Francisco 49ers in the 1980s. The 49ers had well developed system in the 1980s and Shanahan used his time wisely with the 49ers by obtaining skills that would make more important and knowledgeable than ur avaerage coach. The article goes on to talk about the trust the GM has to give the coach before that coach steps into a bigger position. Some coaches arent built for the role of taking on a bigger position and some are. Its hard work. Some GM's dont want their their coaches taking on more responsibility than what they already have dealing with the issues of the players and staff, so the trust has to be there or the whole process will not function properly.
Personally, I think coaches should have moere input into wahts going on with the team. Coaches should know alot about what is going on with team jst as much as they know about their players, but I think giving a coach too much responsibility may also be too much of a load and will have significant impact wit teh relationship with his players. I think it all comes down to the relationship with the coach and his superiors.

Colorado fans can ring up concessions on mobile phones
A new technological trend is taking place all over the country at different stadiums. At the University of Colorado, a new era is about to take place. With new testing in place, Colorado fans can order food right from there seat, in stadium. All it takes is a mobile phone and a stable bank account. There are about 250 restaurants that have anywhere from 3,000 to 4,000 users trying new ways of obtaining foods without having to move from their seat. The system is called “Mocapay’ which is an acronym for mobile cash payments, which involves easy steps of going to a website where they make a personal ID number and setup a prepaid account which is linked directly to their bank account. After setting that up through the website, all that needs to be done is a simple text message. They send that to Mocapay, which in turn sends back a four-digit authorization code with the users balance. Of course this comes with a price; it has a one time $75 activation fee with a $10 monthly payment. Mocapay earns its money by charging 19 cent flat rate for every transaction made. Although this is not the first wireless network to try this, it is definitely a very unique and enhanced way for people to enjoy what they love the most even more.
"Will Nike let Federer walk away?"
V-10 I-10 P-4
With Roger Federer's sneaker and apparel contract with Nike expiring in February, Nike will have to decide whether or not they want to pay him the money he will surely ask for. Federer now gets 1 to 2 million dollars guaranteed annually but will surely ask for close to 5 million dollars guaranteed per year. Nike also endorses the 2nd best player in tennis, Rafael Nadal.
Tennis is a growing in the United States, whether being played for fun or sport. Nike likes to have the top player in every sport under contract with them. With Roger Federer dominating tennis and being called the Tiger Woods of tennis I think it would be a very smart move on Nike's part to pay him the money he wants. Endorsing Federer is only going to help Nike sell more tennis apparel.
"Coloroado fans can ring up concessions on mobile phones"
V-10 I-19 P-14
THis article was about how they are trying out a new technology at the University of Colorado. It's called "Mocapay" which means mobile cash patyments. Colorado University is testing it out at the football stadium for no fee. The idea is that fans can easily text message the concession stand to order the food they want. This type of technology has been around for a few years, but I think we will see more and more wireless technology in the future that makes life a little bit easier. I like the idea of it and I think there is a great market for this type of idea. This could even be used eventually to order at restaurants or other places to get your food. It will probably show up more outside of the sports industry though.
"Flyers, Sixers will give fans a crack at all-you-can-eat seats"
V-10 I-19 P-14
Every year certain proffessional teams have trouble selling certain seats that do not offer the same great view or action that other high priced seats offer. The Wachovia Center in Philadelphia is taking a crack at all-you-can-eat seats in the upper level seats that are normally vacant during Sixer and Flyer games. These seats will offer all you can eat hot doggs, popcorn, chips and pop. Alcohol will be an additional cost. The officials with the Wachovia Center believe that these seats will be a good option for familys and will increase ticket sales in these sections.
Miami to tear down Orange Bowl
Recently, the city of Miami decided that it was time to tear down and rebuild one of the most historic stadiums in the history of sports, The Orange Bowl. This home of the Miami Hurricanes has been around since 1937 and had hosted millions os colege students over the years. Colllege foootball arent the only ones trying to get in on this, MLB are in discussions on having this be the new home of the Florida Marlins. This Miami landmark was originally had 23,330 seats but over the years has expanded to 72,319 seats which makes it bigger than 22 NFL stadiums. Back when the stadium was first built, it costs around $340,000 which today seems like a bargain. Seeing as how this upcoming project is estimated to cost 216 million dollars.
I think this is a good move not only for the Miami sports scene, but for the city as well. It will benifit the Hurricanes and the Marlins by bringing in more local and national fans to watch their games, which brings in more monet for the teams. It also might prompt more high school athletes to want to commit to the University Miami which brings in more scholarships. It will benifit the city by bringing in more revenue from eager sports fans who are wiling to come from all over the country just to be in this stadium. This relates to business because while the building costs will be high, the long term earnings will eventually outweigh them, which is what the city and taxpayers are will be looking for.

Will Nike let Federer Walk Away?
This article talks about Roger Federer, a huge tennis player and what he has accomplished. He renewed his Nike endorsement in 2002 when he representing himself. His performance determined how much he would make in that year. It talks about the different companies and what tennis players are under contract. John Isner's success on the tour this summer has given him a new Nike endorsement. Will he be the new face of Nike? Will him and Federer stand side by side on the same endorsement company? They will see, but now he is on Nike.

"Crocs sticking with AVP indoors and out."
The Crocs shoe company has extended its title deal with the AVP until 2012. Even though the crocs shoes are typically worn outside or on the beach they also have shoes that can be worn indoors during the winter for athletes.
But they're lastest move is the beach volleyball players who typically play in the sand barefoot have found a shoe that could fit to their needs.
The Crocs company has also signed deals with MLB, NHL, six NASCAR drivers, more than 100 colleges, the PGA Tour and sponsorships to 25 colleges.
The AVP remains Crocs' largest sponsorship both in terms of fees and marketing support.
Flyers, Sixers will give fans a crack at all-you-can-eat seats
Volume 10 Issue 19 page14
This article talks about how Wachovia Center's sports teams are having trouble with selling the so called "nose bleed" seats at the top of the arena. The new plan talks about setting up an incentive program where the tickets would include an all you can eat special along with the tickets. This package includes all you can eat hot dogs, popcorn, chips and salsa and soda, raising prices from $47.50 to $66.
Personally I believe that this is a very good incentive. It attracts fans to new opportunities that werent available before. Even though the ticket prices will rise I believe that fans will be more likely to spend the extra money to get this new pacaage and sacrafice a section lower that doesnt include the all-you-can-eat special. At the Wachovia Center this brings a new perspective to buying nose bleed tickets now that this new package is available.
Players Inc. stays 'Real' with new round of ads
volume 10 issue 19 pg12
This article is basically talking how the NFL's player association is launching the second installment of it's "Real" marketing campaign. These particular advertisements were made not to sell anything but to show people a different side of players in the NFL. It was meant to humanize the players and show the people and their fans these players intrests and why they love the game of football.
I liked this article and this campaign. It's important that people see this and understand that not every player in the NFL is a criminal. It's also a great thing for the fans of the game of football to know what drives these guys and the passion they have for the game.
volume 10 issue 19 pg 7
The article that I chose to read, "Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl" was a very interesting piece. It talked about the fact that the city of Miami, along with a few other organizations, have agreed that it is time to relieve the this great city of one of its greatest landmarks. Tearing down the historic home of the Orange Bowl will cost close to $20 million just in demolition. However, this significant amount of money will be well worth it, because the stadium is way past a need of renovation, and a new home for the Orange Bowl is exactly what the city of Miami is screaming for.
This article was especially interesting to me because I just had the privilege of spending the summer in Miami. While down in that beautiful city these past few months, I did get a chance to see the beautiful stadium, and I have to say, as great as it was to see it, it is time for it to go. A new stadium will be a breath of fresh air for the team and all its fans, not that Miami needs more construction though!

“Will Nike let Federer walk away?”
Roger Federer who is quickly entering his name into the conversation as to who is the greatest tennis player of all time, may soon no longer endorse Nike. Federer’s deal with Nike expires soon and experts in the field expect that his contract will not be renewed because he will ask for too much guaranteed money. His current deal makes him 1 million guaranteed and then bonuses based off performance, but this February when his deal is set to expire he is expected to ask for closer to 5 million guaranteed, which Nike is expected to turn down. Fortunately for Federer, there is a long line of suitors for this tennis phenom.

"Miami to tear down historic Orange Bowl"
I believe that it is sad to see the 70 year old Orange Bowl Stadium being torn down at the end of the 2007 season. The Miami Hurricanes will play at Dolphins Stadium next season. Orange Bowl Stadium has witnessed many nantional titles being won and big caliber games that were played. There is talk that the Florida Marlins will have a new baseball stadium in that same area that the Orange Bowl Stadium was held at.

"Colorado fans can ring up concessions on mobile phones"
I think that the Mocapay is a great idea that can benefit both consumers and stadium profits. The benefit that the patrons do not have to get out of their seat to order food can benefit them in two ways. One they do not have to miss an action from the game, they can just remain in their seats and order food. Also, it will dramatically decrease the lines for consession. This means of consession can also help reduce stadium traffic making the stadium a more fan friendly atmosphere.
This type of banking can also help stadium profits. Fans will be much happier sitting in their seats not waiting in lines for food. How many times have you been to a game, and were hungry, but did not get any food because you did not want to wait in line. I would not mind paying a little extra to have my food brought to me. Also anything over six dollars will save the stadium money because of the reduced credit card charges. You cant even buy a beer for less then 6.50.
I think that this industry will grow becuase it benefits both the business and consumer

"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales ata Bucs games" by Don Muret
This article is about how Raymond James Stadium denied Levy Restaurants the right to sell liquor and mixed drinks in public areas around the stadium. Levy Restaurants supplies liquor and mixed drinks for the neighboring Jacksonville Jaguars. Tampa officials were skeptical about letting Levy Restaurants supply the drinks in the stadium for fear of crimes by the fans after drinking these drinks. The City Council at first agreed wth Levy restaurants but in August they backed out of the deal beacuse of their fears. Surprisingly, the Jacksonville Jaguars haven't had many alcohol related problems during the games. Some people think fans are scared to drink to their limits before they get into the gates because of security issues.
Personally, I agree with the Jacksonville Jaguars organization and their policy of having the Levy restaurants' corporation serve liquor and mixed drinks during the games. I think fans should take full resposnibilty for their actiosn. If the fans decide that they want to get really drunk during a game then they should have the right to, but i would have more security at these games. I think the Tampa bay Buccanears organization is losing out on a chance to earn more money, but in a way I dont nlame them for not serving these drinks at the Bucs games. I think the team officials know the team and the fans the best so they probably don't think it would be the best idea to give more alcohol to its fans. I guess what is best for one team is not what is best for the other.
The article that I am reviewing is about a camera crew called sportsouth that have been filming Appalachian States football team for a reality t.v. show. They have been at their training camps, in the locker room, even on the bus. Two saturdays ago Appalachian State, a Division 1AA team upset number 5 ranked michigan in the first game of the season. Sportsouth had no idea that this would be such a big hit. Stores had record selling days by selling shirts supporting the Appalachian State football team. The show will debut this saturday at 10 PM only in about six states in the South East.
"Right Place, Right Team"
V-10, I-20, PP 1&35
This particular article talked about a TV station called Sports South that has a show called "Under the Lights." Each week this TV show follows a college football team as they prepare for a game. The first team that they happened to follow through training camp and leading up to the first game was Football Championship Subdivision Team (I-AA) Appalachian State. THis team was the first I-AA team to beat a I-A ranked team ever. SPorts South was at the right place at the right time.
It talked about how their ratings would be through the roof and that they would have to change the show for this partciular week from 1/2 hour to a full hour. It also talked about how mechandise sales from all over the country has gone up for this team and is expected to surpass the last two years when the won the I-AA National Title.
Will Nike let Federer walk away?Roger Federer is the #1 ranked player in the world and arguably the greatest of all time. Nike is paying Federer substantially low compared to other top ranked athletes. His contract, with incentives range from 1 to 4 million dollars. Federer wants at least 5 million dollars up front guaranteed money. When his contract expires will Nike pay him the money? Federer is the best player in the world but lacks charisma. Nike has a Rafael Nadal as a client who is the #2 player in the world who has a better fan appeal. Nike has a big decision on there hands. Do they pay Federer the big bucks or do they let go the greatest tennis player in our era and possible the greatest of all time.
[Week 3] "Right Place, Right Team"
V-10, I-20, P-1,35
The article I read about the Appalachian State football team having there season documented. A production company SportSouth had a camera crew follow the team for their reality series they were airing, turns out they got way more than they bargained for. After following the team around since Aug. 1st the crew went with the team to its game against the Michigan Wolverines and documented the whole game and possibly the greatest upset in college football history from the pre-game locker room, to halftime, to its conclusion.
I believe this is a great opportunity for the production company to make some money and make a name for themselves. Especially if they decide to documented it on DVD and plan to release it for purchase. As a Penn State fan I know I would love to have a copy of a rival Big Ten team getting beat on their own field by a Division-I AA team.
[Week 3]"Bottled up: Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
V-10, I-20, P-13
This article discusses the issue of selling hard liquor in stadiums. Tampa Bucs denied a request for hard liquor to be sold in public areas other than suites and clubs. The reasoning for this is that, most of the drunkenness comes from tailgaiting and more liquor does not need to be dished out to these people. Jacksonville on the other hand offers hard liquor to the public and they have had no more problems than in recent past. Another issue was that people would feel they need to drink over their limit.
I think that hard liquor sold be sold to the general public and not just in suites and clubs. People may not get as drunk in a tailgate if the hard liquor/mixed drinks could be purchased in the stadium. People would also not get drunk during the game because the drinks would be pricey and not as much money spent. I think it would benefit income though because even though people would not be buying 4 or 5 drinks, more people would be buying the pricey drinks. This would also benefit the stadiums because there would be less related alcohol incidents and less people driving home drunk from games. I also don't think that people would feel they need to drink over their limit just because the liquor is offered. People only have so much money when they walk into the stadium. I think instead of not selling liquor at all, that they should come up with a system that will limit how many drinks people can buy during the game.
[Week 3] "Tech firm helps clubs get more out of data"
V-10, I-20,P-1,34
This article is about a statistical software used to analyze sports teams' management and sales. StarBridge Inc. founder Matt Marolda had a clear vision of the importance of systemical operation of a sport team. An anonymous NBA team had first implemented the program. The article does not provide the specific data, but I can guess that the team which used the program would be one of those who have dramaically improved their performance and revenue.
That is why this company is making huge profits these days. Also the new system, "StratEdge" was sold to many other teams currently.
I think this is a very efficient system for the sports teams. Especially, the teams which don't have enough budget to buy big-time players to attract audience or teams which are now in rebuilding situation will hurry implementing the software. Because this way, they can reduce the expenses and maximize the effectiveness of their performance and finance. Ticketing part is the great example of efficient financing.
In the next few years, i think most professional sports teams will have to introduce one of these systems, whether they like it or not. Otherwise you will be fall behind by those who manage their teams with more precise analysis.
NFL Themed sponsor spending will hit estimated $1.1 billion
V-10 I-20
The NFL is the largest sporting association in the U.S. The NFL is spending $1.1 billion to advertise on networks. That is kind of rediculous because as big as the NFL is products and companies will just use these NFL players to try and increase sales. I feel as though it's outrageous because the NFL doesn't need to spend that much money for just advertisement. Now a days the NFL is on everything from pepsi commercials to direct tv commercials. I really disagree with the 1.1 billion dollar for advertisement, but if it is to increase sales or to movtivate people to do certain things than, I guess it's not too bad.
Proposed changes in spectrum pose danger to sports technology.

Made up by the "White Space Coalition", which comprises of companies like Microsoft and Google, this bill wants to allows new wireless devises to obtain freequencies that are not in use. These frequencies are called "white space."
As I read this article I found it to be very one sided, he failed to explain what these companies plan to do with this "white space." As I researched into the subject I found that he had written other articles about this issue. Compromises can be made around this issue and the author reported that a group against this bill did offer this bill a few of their own to try. One to test these systems.
It is a very good idea to test these new wireless technologies in every frequency to completely make sure they provide no interference with the already implemented wireless systems. I believe that if the Federal Communications Commission votes to allow the use of "white space" they would, hopefully, be smart enough not to enable a system that interferes with something that a lot of people use.
In wrap-up, way to go Ken for getting involved in what large coorporations are toying around with these day. Keep up the good fight.
[Week 3] "Schools hesitate to make the leap"
V-10, I-20, P-24
This article discusses the pros and cons of division I-AA colleges moving to the division I-A ranks in Football.
At first I thought, why wouldn’t any college not want to try to move up to I-A in all college sports. They would get more money in sponsorships, higher recruitment, and receive more funding from the NCAA as well as alumni. But after reading about all the expenses to jump up: added travel costs, stadium upgrades, and the costs of funding other sports to comply with title IX can result in millions of dollars.
In my opinion, all division I-AA colleges need to think long and hard before making the leap. If the team cannot find a way for its program to be competitive in I-A within 5 years, then it is far from worth the costs of the leap. Students, alumni, and fans will not accept the rise in tuition and ticket costs that are needed to maintain a Division I-A program if their team is not successful. I believe that only a program that can be sure to be competitive in division I-A should even consider the move.
[Week 3]"Right place, right team"
V-10,I-20,P-1,35
This article was about the production company SportSouth and the story they were doing on the Appalachian St. football team. SportSouth had a camera with the team since August 1st. The cameras traveled with the team to their flight to their first game at Michigan and even traveled with the team on the bus to the stadium. The company was to air a 30 minute reality show on the team's training camp and first game, but this all became a bigger story after Appalachian St. knocked off Michigan becoming the 1st Division I-AA team to defeat a ranked team.
The upset couldn't have worked out any better for SportSouth. They were the only ones to follow the team through training camp up until the big game. Now everyone wants to know who Appalachian St. is and where they are from. It just so happens that SportSouth has their story. Since the upset there have been thousands of t-shirt orders for Appalachian St. shirts. This is huge for the school and SportSouth. When the show airs on Saturday I imagine there ratings will be close to ten times higher than what they would have originally been. Because of Appalachian St., small schools now believe they have a chance and the larger schools should realize that they can never over look a smaller unranked school like Appalachian St.
[week 3] "ESPN to 'take some chances' against NFL"
V-10 I-20 P-3
This article talked about ESPN changing its strategy against NBC "Sunday Night Football" because last year they had the NBA go against them but it didn't do well. I think its great for them doing different things like putting Nascar and NBA games on to go against it. I still believe America will watch football over Nascar and the NBA but we will see.
v.10, i.20, pg17-18.
I would like to see Division 1AA and possibly division 2 schools make a move to Division 1A. I think it would make the atmosphere more competitive and give hope to upcoming teams that might have a chance in surviving. For Boise State, their ticket sales sky rocketed since last years win in the bowl game. Does this give hope to fans that they might have a chance in actually competing with Div. 1 teams?
This article might impact the sports business side of it in terms that when ticket sales go up, then ultimately everything changes. The fans might get more into the game, the food prices might go up along with every other merchandise that the team might sell. The sports industry has alot to handle if these teams try to make it up a division. I give them credit. But figures show that a single team in division 1A makes around $40 million and some of the division 1AA conference might make $30 million when you put all of those teams together. The sports industry will definitely be involved.
[Week 2]"ESPN to 'take some chances' against NFL"
V-10, I-20, P-3
This article discusses ESPN's intentions to compete with NBC's ratings giant "NFL Sunday Night Football". To me, being a big football fan myself, whenever there is an NFL football game, I want to see it, the only exception being that its a lousy game. So for ESPN, I believe that no matter what they show Sunday nights, it will always play second fiddle to the NFL. Although as I mentioned above, they do have a shot at catching some increased ratings given the NFL game is a lousy one.
[Week 3] ESPN to “take some chances” against NFL
Vol -10 I-20 P-3
This article is mostly about EPSN fighting against NBC’s TV ratings on Sunday night football. NBC’s TV ratings from switching it to Sunday night football from Monday night it increased from 10.8/16.3 to 11.0/17.5 million viewers. ESPN is messing around with their schedule of activities on the air with putting NASCAR on instead of NBA for two Sunday. It seems like they are going to try different things to see what works out the best for their ratings.
If it was up to me when there’s a football game on or NASCAR I’m definitely going to watch the football game, so I will be one of those people to increase NBC’s rating on Sundays instead of ESPN. I don’t know why they are so concerned with those nights’ ratings because I watch ESPN everyday and I think lots of other people watch ESPN more often than they do NBC’s programs during the week.
(Week 3) V:10 I:10 PG:3
ESPN to 'take some chances' against NFL.
I thought it article was very interesting. Not only is there competition within the sports today, but also within the newtworks we watch these sports on. This article is about ESPN trying to keep high ratings and attain higher rating than NBC when they are hosting the NFL games.
I think this is a great strategy. ESPN knows that there are going to be millions of people watching NBC when sunday night football is on. And ESPN found out last year that by airing basketball, they did not get such good ratings, so they are trying for something new this year. Maybe it will help the ratings out, maybe it won't but they are willing to give it a try to see if they can get higher ratings.
Even though ESPN is trying to achieve higher ratings on sunday nightsm, I still do not think that they will come close to the ratings that NBC rakes in with football airing on sunday nights.
[Week 3] "FedEx Cup Playoff events Report big sales increases"
V-10, I-20, P-4
This article talks about this year’s addition to the golfing world, the FedEx Cup playoffs at the end of the tour season. The article doesn’t focus on the player reaction to the article, but instead focuses on sales of both tickets and sponsorships. According to the article, sales in every category are up as compared to the same events as last year. “Corporate hospitality sales are up 37 percent and ticket sales up 30 percent for the Tour Championship finale in Atlanta.” (Show, 2007) While the finale is only one event, all the other events show similar growth.
I don’t believe this growth has anything to do with the actual event, or with the fact the PGA has now implemented a “playoff.” I believe these events are experiencing growth because for the first time in any event outside of the Majors, big named players have a large incentive to actually attend these end of year tournaments. The extra money is being shelled out because it is one of the few times outside of the four Majors where fans attending, have a near guaranteed shot at actually seeing their favorite golfer tee off. Fans and sponsors aren’t turning out to see this “playoff” that the PGA has drummed up; they are all showing up to see the big names compete. Players the fans and sponsors love, like Woods, Singh, Mickelson and K.J. Choi, don’t care about these events. They are exhausted after one of the longest seasons of any professional sport and are only looking forward to the start of the offseason. For many of these golf superstars golf ends after the fourth and final Major of the year, the PGA Championship.
Will this FedEx Cup “playoff” work? It works brilliantly in other professional sports like football, basketball, hockey and baseball. So can a playoff work in an individual sport? Surprisingly enough a very similar format has proved to be very successful in another individual sport, NASCAR. NASCAR has its Nextel Race for the Cup, which much like the FedEx Cup, is set up by the accumulation of points throughout the other events throughout the year, and then the top point getters compete for the Championship in the final few events of the year. Unfortunately for golf, the golfers like Woods and Mickelson, aren’t taking to this “playoff” the way NASCAR drivers took to the race for the cup. Both Woods and Mickelson, who are both in the hunt for the Championship, took one event off each. So will it survive? I believe it will be really hard for this “playoff” system to survive if the PGA can’t get big names on board with the system. And how bad is it going to look this year, in the FedEx Cups inaugural year, when a golfer is going to win this thing after he took an entire week off.
[week 3] V-10 I-20 P-8
Sirius to air Sporting News Radio programs
Starting this year Sirius Satellite Radio has signed a one year contract with Sporting News Radio that will air several radio shows. Since 2001, Sporting News Radio was in contract with XM Radio only to have some shows cut a year ago to open negotiations with Sirius, but only for a short year. Already, there are hopes that there will be an extension for multiple years in advance. Shows such as The Tony Bruno Show and The Troy Aikman Show.
As a Sirius subscriber, I really like this addition. It will halp persuade me to keep the radio for months to come, especially during football season and when I would be doing some traveling. I also think that it will appeal to a wider audience, those who may not previously have an interest in this type of radio may find something intriguing about this. For those who do a lot of traveling during the season and may not be able to pick up their favorite teams on the road will be more prone to buy this and install it in their car.
Bottled up:Tampa keeps limits on liquor sales at Bucs games
vol. 10 issue 20 pg.13
This article talks about the city of Tampa denying the request to sell hard liquor in public areas at Raymond James Stadium. The City Council originally approved the idea in July, decision was then reversed in late August when a few council members stated Bucs fans will have plenty of opportunities to drink before and during the NFL games.
I think getting rid of alcohol during NFL games would be a bad decision, this would mean less money coming into the organization. On the other hand I do believe fans should drink responsible. I also agree that the fans that do want to drink during the games will engage in pregame drinking. Fans will feel compelled to drink to their upper limits before they enter the stadium. This will most likely lead to more security problems.
"Jaworski excited to take his place in the MNF booth"
(week 3)v-10, I-20, p-38
This article was an interview with Ron Jaworski who is a retired football player, where he played quaterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, that has also been a NFL analyst for 17 years with espn. He is now on the monday night football lineup this year replacing Joe theismann. From only seeing a couple of preseaon games and last weeks monday night game, I can say that I like Jaworski a hell of a lot better than Theismann. I appreciate what Jaworski has to say because he understands the game of football very well. The way he breaks down plays to show why they were or were not successful is a very helpful to those people who are trying to learn more about the game. I think he does a very well job at his new role because of how much he loves the game and how well he is experienced with the game.
Week 3
"Right Place, right team"
V-10, I-20, P-1,35
This article was fun for me to read because one of my roomates is a huge Michigan fan, and I really enjoyed rubbing the loss to Appalachian State in his face. The article was mostly about a 30- minute reality show called "Under the Lights" that SportSouth was doing on Appalacian State. Since Appalachian State beat a big team like Michigan the 30 minute show is going to upgraded to an hour. I think tht this type of weekly reality show is an excellent idea. It's a great way to get the fans at smaller schools excited and interested in how their team is doing. After capturing the huge win at Michigan, i'm sure the hour long video will be an inspiring piece of film to watch. Appalachion State will probably have a jam packed stadium all season long, so it will be very good for ticket sales. The article also talked about how T-shirts are being printed up all accross the country. This big win will give a lot of chances fo making money in the sports world as far as keepsake DVD's and t-shirts. Luckily for SportSouth they were at the right place at the right time.
"Jaworski excited to take his place in the 'MNF' booth."
I have been watching ESPN for as long as I have been interested in sports, which is basically since i could walk. I never played football but I love the game and anything affiliated with it. I never really cared for Joe Theismann as a player or commentator, I think it stems from my dad's hatred for him, and I was extremely dissapointed when I found out that ESPN was giving him 'MNF' and would even turn down the volume when he came on. When I found out that ESPN was going to switch to Ron Jaworski I was extremely pleased.
I don't really like the way that Jaworski has no love for the Steelers, being that he was Eagle, but he is a great analyst and knows the game extremely well. I really like the fact that he breaks down every play and really knows what he's talking about. He has a great repoir with the other two analysts in the booth and I believe it is a major step up to the point that I even listen to them talk now. ESPN did a great job finding the right guys to fill that booth and keep people informed on the game.

"NFL themed sponsor spending will hit estimated $1.1B"
This article is about the increase of advertising with NFL themes and NFL players. It is said that there is a 1.1 Billion dollar number with regards to media and marketing with the NFL. This number will be an increase of ten percent from last year. There are about 160 players that are scheduled to appear in these commercials, such as Peyton Manning and Reggie Bush. It seems as though every year there are more and more sponsors trying to affiliate themselves with the NFL. It probably has to do with its popularity and it seems like NFL players have a more kind of charisma to do such commercials. With all the talk of steriods in baseball its easy to see which is a more sensible pick for advertisers. I enjoy most all of the commercials with NFL players in them.
"NFL-themed sponser spending will hit estimated $1.1B"
This article really grabbed my attention because of my buddies and I are always talking about commercials and how much we love seeing our favorite athletes in funny tv spots. Seeing characters like Reggie Bush, LT, Hasselback, or Chad Johnson make watching commercials ALMOST tolerable... not to mention how funny Peyton Manning is on all his commercials, like his DirecTV ones! Its really interesting to read just how much money is spent on these articles, when all we really see is the end product that ends up being cut up to shreds and appears to us as a 2 second tv spot. But, despite the price, I'll continue to enjoy watching football/baseball games, as well as other sporting events, as long as I get to see my favorite athletes in these types of adds.

"Bottled up: Tampa limits on liquor sales at Bucs games"
Tampa's sports arenas have put a ban on selling liquor in public areas in their stadiums. Only premium seats are served hard liquor and only beer and wine are sold at the vending booths around the stadiums.
Personally I believe that this is a very good idea and I believe that it should stay that way. Liquor can do some mysterious things to the body and make people do things they usually wish the didnt. By only selling hard liquor to premium ticket holders to the boxes and business seats in the upper levels can reduce many problems rather then selling it to the big vending areas in the stadium. Usually the premium ticket holders are the most responcible ones out of the whole stadium and really i believe that if anyone was to have the privledge to buy hard liquor and or mixed drinks it should be them. It cuts down and prevents many problems that could occur due to the effects of liquor. Stadiums across the nation should be following this precedent and alot of problems could be solved and prevented.
Week[ 2] "Volume of lacrosse players outstripping NCAA's capacity"
V-10, I 19, P-39
This article discusses the rising popularity of Lacrosse thoughout the country and the lack of NCAA programs for the incoming players.
At first glance, this article may spark little interest in an average sports fan because lacrosse is far from a mainstream sport. But after reading the facts and figures presented in this article, one realizes that lacrosse is quickly rising in popularity throughout schools across the coutry. Lacrosse players have almost doubled in the NCAA in the past 15 years. Lacrosse is growing at a faster rate in highschools throughout the U.S.; causing a shortage of programs for these future college students. The NCAA is presently trying to remedy the problem.
Over the past 15 years, the popularity of sports overall has changed dramatically. We've seen declined popularity of MLB, Hockey, and boxing; while soccer and MMA fighting has seen a great increase in fans. Is it unbelievable to think that in the next 15 years, Lacrosse could make its way to the professional level? The NCAA's solution to the rise of lacrosse is imperative for the sports growth. More NCAA teams would create more players, fans, and possibly television coverage. I would not be surprised to see an explosion of lacrosse on a national level in the near future.
[Week 3]" Program convinces students that attendance has its rewards"
V-10, I-20, P-14
The article on rewards-based ticketing was very captivating. Collegiate athletic departments around the country have been interested in increasing attendance rates for years. With increased fan attendance universities are able to generate more ticket and ancillary revenue. This new software technology allows universities to offer point values to fans that attend particular games. Students use a magnetic card to gain these valuable reward points. This marketing approach is similar to the credit card companies that offer frequent flyer miles to customers. This strategy allows athletic departments to attract fans to less than popular home games.
I believe that this marketing approach will revolutionize collegiate athletics. Fans will now focus on accumulating points so they can gain access to the premiums games. Fans will more than likely purchase more merchandise and concessions because of the rewards system. The credit card companies have experience increased consumers spending with the implementation of rewards programs. Athletic departments will experience the same success as the credit card companies. Over the next few years we will see a rapid proliferation in reward programs among universities.
[week 4] "Nets search preps for big names, games" v-10 I-21 P-8/9
This article talks about how national sport networks such as ESPN and Fox Sports broadcast a high school game of the week. It goes throughout the country finding who is the best athletes in the country and showing their talents to the whole United States. Most of the games show multiple blue chip division 1 prospects.
One team from Colorado named Cherry Creek will be televised on ESPN. It will show one of the top rated quaterbacks named Jack Elway. His father is John Elway, the Hall of Famer from the Denver Broncos. He is the quarterback coach on the team. I believe that this is a good thing but I wish they would showcase teams that are not top ranked teams. My highschool was not good at all but wished we could of been shown on tv.
[Week 2] "Snap decision or good strategy?" Vol. 10 Issue 20 pgs. 17-23
This article discusses the schools in Division I-AA (subdivision to Division I-A to either stay in their division or to make the jump up the ladder to I-A. There are many ups and downs to the making a decision like this. Take Western Kentucky for example; they are moving to Division I-A in 2008, and their very first game is against one of the most storied programs in college football history, the Alabama Crimson Tide (who generated $44 million in football revenue in 2005). Only time will tell whether or not this was a wise decision for future success, but for now it looks good because just for Western Kentucky to make the trip to Alabama, the Crimson Tide will give their school $250,000 to play them.
As many people know, one school that made this move up the ladder was rather successful last year when they defeated the Oklahoma Sooners in the Fiesta Bowl, and that team would be the Boise State Broncos. By defeating the Sooners in the bowl game, Boise State increased its revenue by $4 million. A school not so lucky by this move was the University of Idaho, who has gone 14-59 since 2002, and bairly broke even last year in revenue.
In closing, I would have to say that if your school has the right leaders to bring your program to the top, it's absolutely worth a try. Just a little success can leapfrog your program from state-wide to nationally known. It starts from your athletic director down the coaches who do your recruiting all the way to the boosters who help raise the money. If all teams work together, there is no reason why the move up the ladder shouldn't be a good move.
[Week 1]"Insiders Applaud Goodell's First Year" Volume 10, Issue 19, PP 1
This article stood out to me because there has been some misconceptions about the new NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. It all started the first few weeks he took the job, when he brought an idea about moving the Super Bowl overseas. As a diehard NFL fan, I was outraged to hear this, but then I read this article. Roger Goodell has done several good things for this league in just his first year. I now understand his thinking, trying to globalize the sport, but once he heard all the outraged fans and players thoughts, he came to his senses.
This article also talks about how he has won over the owners with his work with revenue sharing, which Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones gives him high praise for. Goodell has also cracked down on player conduct. His main focus, in which all owners agree with, is to protect the shield of the NFL, and make sure that it has a positive image.
[Week 4] "Unions Try to Help New, Sometimes Vulnerable Members"
V-10, I-21, P-25
This atricle is the best article I think I have read so far. It was about how the NFL, NBA, and MLB bring in people to give sort of classes to rookies about how to be a pro.
I totally agree with this because you see in a lot in pro sports that these rookies come in to the league and don't know how to act, don't know how to handle their money, don't know how to say no to drugs, and don't even know how to treat their family. I think this could help pro athletes from becoming more "cocky" and things of this nature when they are veterans. I think it could very well also help with drugs in the pros. Definitely a good article.
Week[4] "Networks cite MLB Changes for TV Gains."
V-10, I-21, P1
This article is about various reasons why MLB is doing far better in TV ratings than expected.
The author in this article explains several changes ESPN and FOX made to raise thier ratings. I'm sure this had some impact, but I believe it is very little.
I believe the bigger reason is that baseball has been a much better product this year than in the previous 2-3 years. In the beginning of the year, There was the hisotric chase of Barry Bonds to capture the all-time Home Run record. This pulled people into this baseball season. After the record was broken, fans realized that this was finally a year of exciting baseball.
There is not a single division race has been decided yet and all are closer than expected. For the first time in years...it seems that almost all teams have a chance to make it into the playoffs. Which, I belive has more to do with the boost in ratings than any marketing. Better product will always equal better ratings.
V-10 I-21 P-13
This article is about the meadowlands in New Jersey. They have plans of having the superbowl played there in the next couple of years but there are issues about it. Most of the superbowls played recently have been played indoors or at stadiums with roofs. This New Jersey stadium has no roof and would be played outside. Remember now that the superbowl is played in January and it would be pretty frigid outside. Then again I think football is a man sport and should be played wherever, no matter what the weather is like.
"Hot summer sales steer NBA towards another gate record"
[Week 4]Vol-10 I-21 P-5
In this article is discusses how the NBA is increasing there ticket sales. They have gone up 40% already from last year, but they think that they are going to be reaching a record high of an 80% renewal of season ticket sales. 10 of the 30 teams in the NBA have already sold there 10,000 mark of the season ticket sales. The cause of the increase of ticket sales are because the teams itself is hiring people to specialize in ticket sales. The teams that has the biggest ticket sale increase is the Utah Jazz and for the Miami Heat increased there ticket sale when Shaq got traded to the team. So it looks like the NBA is doing a good job marketing the teams to get more money
I think it is great that the NBA is increasing their ticket sales because that means that more people are paying to watch them live than at home. It also seems like they are hiring more people to just specialize in tickets instead of having other with those responsibilities. I am a big NBA fan so I am a big supporter of the league and think that all these numbers should increase each year because there are more and more better players coming through. Their job is to entertain and they do a great job of it and they also make the league money as well.
[Week 4] V-10, I-21, P-16-25
"Athlete Behavior"
Pages sixteen through twenty-five look at numerous athletes over the past few years who have come into contact with some form of criminal act. Athletes such as Michael Vick, Kobe Bryant, Pacman Jones, The Bengals players, and Ron Artest. The article looks at how the fans have reacted to such stories.
I believe that its a terrible thing how fans and media react to first whisper they hear of an athlete doing something wrong and quickly jump on the accusing bandwagon before the athlete is found guilty or charged with anything. Players are held under a microscope and every move they make is broadcast to our televisions and we tend to believe every word of it. I think people need to start making their decisions on how to feel about an athlete after everything has been sorted out and the athlete has actually been charged. And remember that everyone makes mistakes, even athletes.
[Week4] "Hot summer sales steer NBA toward another gate record."
V-10, I-21, P-5
This article tells the readers about the sales increase in NBA tickets. While there is only a month left before the season starts, teams say that they have increased season ticket sales so far. Full season ticket selling has been increased by 40% and reward rate is also increased.
Still many expect to saell more tickets. There are many reasons for the increase. First, people who are selling tickets, teams, are training staffs more effectively and started have know-hows as time passed by. This can be done with the effort of team management.
Also teams' record and players' better performance have effected the sales. Cleveland is in one of the 10 teams who sold more than 10,000 season tickets currently. Lebron James has achieved it. Chicago is doing very well so that the people expect to have another championship without MJ. Other teams on the list are all very good teams in the league as well. Even though the team manage very well, you still need to expect the athletes to do their best. I think this is about the human skills of the head coaches. Fans go to see their team winning and their players dominating the competitor's court.
You have to harmonize teams marketing and management department with the players' performance to make a synergy.
[Week 4]"UFL names Huyghue first commissioner"
V-10, I-21, P-1,31
This article discusses the decision of the new UFL to name former NFL executive Michael Huyghue as its first commissioner. The UFL is expected to start out with about eight to ten teams and is set to begin next summer with games taking place on Friday nights.
Though I believe that Huyghue and his experience will give the UFL its best chance at success, I think this entire league is a bad idea. First off, they plan to compete with the NFL for coaches and players personnel. With the NFL and its celebrated history, its hard to believe anyone would pass up a chance to be a part of the NFL to play or coach in a league that may not be around in a year or two.
Second, I simply don't see the need for it, especially when they plan to have their seasons while the NFL and college football seasons will be in full swing. I've never been one to shy away from watching football, but isn't the NFL and college football enough? There simply can't be much of a demand for it. Look what happened with the XFL, that turned out great.
Lastly, what about high school football? Isn't Friday supposed to be their night?
I believe that ultimately this will be a total failure and huge loss of money for all involved, there is simply no need or demand for it. But hey, best of luck to Huyghue and all those involved with the UFL in what will be an uphill battle from day one.
[Week 4]"Unions try to help new, sometimes vulnerable members"
V-10, I-21, P-25
This article discusses how the MLB, NFL, and NBA are going to be implementing rookie programs. This entitles rookie's to attend seminars how to deal with fans, being recognized, managing money, and how to deal with friends from back home.
I think this is an excellent program these organizations are starting. A lot of these young boys that go into the majors don't know what is coming for them. I think that this is going to keep a lot of them from being burn outs as they get older because they spent their money wrongly. I think this will also give them a gradual introduction, so that when they are thrown into the professionals it isn't information overload. A lot of them don't know what to expect either so these programs will better prepare them. Chief operating officer, Gene Orza, for the MLBPA said that the program will now feature a part on spousal abuse. I think that this is very good because a lot of these women who are married to professionals get treated badly and they shouldn't. Now that the rookies will start being trained in this, down the road when they are married we won't see as much abuse going on.
Hot summer sales steer NBA towards another gate record
[Week 4] vol-10 I-21 p.5
This article talks about the summer sales season has put the league on track for its fifth consecutive season. Full season ticket sales are up 40 percent from last year, and soon will approach 80 percent. Ten of the 30 teams have hit the 10,000 full-season-ticket sales mark, soon expecting 13 or 14 teams by the end of October. Teams are increasing their staff in training. I think its a good idea to higher more staff to help come up with new and better ways to improve the league. Teams has added new plans and upgraded their packages. Teams such as Chicago, Dallas, Utah, Phoenix, Miami and others has reached the 10,000 sales mark. Miami Heat and the Utah Jazz has had the biggest increase in ticket sales. I personally enjoy watching NBA games and will continue to support the league. It is clear to see each year the NBA sales increases and will continue to grow year in year out. I believe the league will continue to grow and make more and more money due to the competition and new players entering the league each year. Not only are they seeing an increase in ticket sales but also through team websit sites. I think the NBA has done a great job entertaining and keeping their fans happy.
[Week 4]"Bad Behaivor: Will Fans Ever Walk Away?"
V-10, I-21, P-1,16-25
This article discusses the bad behaivor among athletes during the past couple of years. Some of these athletes that have gotten into trouble include Adam "Pacman" Jones, Kobe Bryant, Tank Johnson, and Michael Vick. There are many more along with these few that have gotten into trouble with the law. This article talks about how the fans react to the athlete's bad behaivor.
I understand that athletes are role models, but for their sake it isn't easy to live under a microscope all of the time. These athletes are making the same mistakes an average human being makes outside of sports, but because they are athletes it is blown up by the media for the public. Bottom line is no matter how many times athletes get in trouble with the law fans will still spend money on their jerseys, go watch the games, and cheer for their favorite teams.
"A New Jersey Super Bowl? New Stadium again raises question" V-10, I-21, P-13
I think it would be a bad idea to have the super bowl take place in a cold atmosphere. Playing in comfortable weather is better than playing in cold weather for both parties. People could argue that it would be even for both teams but I think for the fans sake and for the franchises themselves, in terms of getting fans to come watch the super bowl, it should be played in nice weather. The article states that for the next four years, the super bowls will be played in nice climate weather places. I strongly suggest not to play the super bowl in New Jersey In late January early February.
This would definitely have a strong impact on the sport industry. The super bowl itself has always had a sell out crowd and absolutely no seats available. If they were to have a super bowl in cold climate weather, I am guaranteeing that people would not show. Sometimes , it really does come down for the greatest amount of people for greatest weather. In terms of the sport industry, money has to either stay strong or move up. If this happens, there will be a substantial decrease in money for the franchises and the NFL as a whole.
[Week 4]"A New Jersey Super Bowl? New Stadium again raises questions" V-10, I-21, P-13
This article discusses the possibility of having the first Super Bowl played in a cold climate city. The New York area in the middle of February means only one thing, frigid weather. I see no reason why the NFL would want to have the biggest game in sports today played in subzero weather. It wouldn't be a bad thing if the new stadium were a dome, but to intentionally have the players play football and have the fans watch the game in freezing weather just doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.
Getting to the SuperBowl is suppose to be a reward, and to have the players work so hard to play their final game in NEW YORK IN FEBRUARY is ridiculous. Remember two years ago in SuperBowl XL when the Steelers played the Seahawks in the Miami. The game was highly affected by terrible rain. Weather has such an affect on the way you play the game. If your a passing team, playing in a downpour or a blizzard doesn't help your team too much. If you run the ball, rain and snow doesn't affect your team all that much.
Regardless of where you play the game, fans will still go because it is the biggest game in all of sports. But if your going to play the game, why not reward those fans and players by having the game in a nice climate.
"A New Jersey Super Bowl? New stadium again raises question"
V-10, I-21, P-13
The article discusses the possibility of New Jersey hosting a Super Bowl with the new stadium beeing built. I would love to see a cold weather Super Bowl be played. Every year the Super Bowl is held in a warm weather city that is comfortable for players and fans and is viewed almost like a vacation. I think a cold weather city hosting a Super Bowl would be GREAT. It would be a change and I believe a lot of fun to watch. One of the most remembered games of all time is the Patriots Vs. Raiders AFC championship game in Foxburough stadium in a snow storm. I believe the fans would love to see a game such as the super bowl played in conditions such as snow. This would also give cities in the northeast a chance to host the biggest sporting event of the year. Imagine the Super Bowl beeing played in PBURGH! I think the NFL should give New Jersey a shot and see how it turns out. My guess is it would be a HUGE success.

"Fox brings FSN Ohio Into Big Ten Net Carriage fight"
Fow and Time Warner been talking about proposals for FSN Ohioe to carry the Big Ten Network, but the companies are far apart from a deal and no one actually thinks that one will be made in short time. Although a deal is not in process, and probably won't be for a while, the negotiations show that the two companies are keeping the lines open for discussion. Even though Fox Sports Ohiolost the rights to the Cleveland Indians last year, they still hold the rights to the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Columbus Blue Jackets, with which paying the Cavaliers a whopping 25 million last year. Fox is currently trying to get $2 per subscriber for FSN Ohio and $1 per subscriber for the Big Ten Network.
I think this is a good marketing idea for FSN. It is especially good for all of those Big Ten fans that may have trouble finding a network that covers their favorite teams all of the time. With the network will come history and top games from the past that they will be able to view. This is a great idea for FSN to add this network, it open a door for many other ideas and networks to do similar things in this field.
]"A New Jersey Super Bowl? New Stadium again raises questions" V-10, I-21
Having a super bowl in New Jersey would be a great experience. The sports networking and NFL GM have been talking about having a Super Bowl in a cold climate. It has always been in a nice warm weather city just for the good of the game. I feel as though they can affect teams, because if your team plays in cold climates all the time then they can play better in cold climates rather than warm. The Super Bowl is always in a nice weather climate or a dome. That's also an advantage for some teams. Teams who play in warm climates all the time or in domes have an advatage. So if the NFL mixes up the Super Bowl in cold then back to warm climates, it would be better. It would aslo make fans happier too becasuse they also want to see the big game in a different climate. It would give other cities to make a larger impact stadium wise. It would give different cities in the North the chance to experience a game such as the super bowl. I would love to see the super bowl in a cold enviroment.
[Week 4] "A New Jersey Super Bowl? New stadium again raises question" V-10, I-21, P-13.
This article talks about the new stadium that is being constructed in New Jersey, which upon completion will house both the Giants and the Jets. This stadium is a joint project between the two teams and is estimated to cost upwards of around $1.7 billion. The question raised by this article is whether or not this state of the art stadium will have any shot at all at hosting a Super Bowl?
To me this is a simple answer; yes it should have just as much of a shot as any other stadium in the league. The problem is that the NFL owners, who vote on the locations for Super Bowls, prefer them in warm weather climates. In fact the owners have gone so far as to set a minimum temperature guideline as to what appropriate weather for a Super Bowl should be. While I don’t know what that magical number is, I can assure you that it is certainly not that temperature in late January in Jersey.
Is this fair? I don’t think so. In fact I think that it is utterly ridiculous. The Pats, Steelers, Bills, Eagles, Jets, Giants and of course the Packers all play in cold weather climates during the regular season, and they don’t complain. In fact part of the game, for these teams, is batteling the weather. It makes the game as a whole more interesting. So why can’t the Super Bowl be played in a cold weather climate? Well it comes down to one of two options as I see it. Either the NFL thinks the fans won’t want to watch or attend, or they think sponsors won’t want to sponsor a cold climate game. Well, as a fan, I know I love watching games where the snow is falling so fast and so much that we can’t even see the yard lines on the field. And I know I love watching a game where it rains so much that a quarterback takes off to run and slides to avoid a hit and slides for like 10 yards through a sea of water. Its football, its meant to be played in these conditions. Arguably the most storied franchise in NFL history, the Green Bay Packers, has been playing in the most outrageous weather of any team and they thrive on it.
So ultimately, as I see it, it comes down to the fact that the NFL doesn’t believe that the sponsors will support a cold weather game. Is it fair? No. But until the owners realize that it is the SUPER BOWL. The biggest sporting event of the year and the sponsors will be there whether the game is held in sunny Miami or freezing, snowy Jersey in late January; the game will always be played in sunny warms locales or heated domes.
[Week 4] "Big money changing high school sports on the web" V-10, I-21, P-8,9.
Any sport at any other level has had a huge amount of coverage over the last 50 years. Some have just recently become more popular, but at a professional level any sport can be seen on ESPN or another television channel any night of the week. Finally high school sports is going to get the same amouont coverage. During the last few years I have seen a high school football game on ESPN every once in awhile. There are some amazing high school athletes throughout the U.S. and seeing them play on national television is pretty neat. I think that the internet scouting site and team sites are a great way to get this started, and a huge amount of money can be made with these sites. This is a great chance to make money by advertising on the internet, and the amounts of money listed in the article show this. Also, they listed a schedule of high school football games to be played on ESPN networks, but I noticed some of the games were having two teams from completely diferent states playing. I ccould see a league or something being formed in the future of select teams from accross the nation to play each other each year. This could be another chance for money to be made.
[Week 4] "A New Jersey Super Bowl? New stadium again raises question" V-10, I-21, P-13.
This article talks about the new stadium that is being constructed in New Jersey. It would host the NY Giants and the NY Jets in one stadium. It is estimated to cost upwards of around $1.7 billion. The article talks about if and can this stadium host a superbowl? The NFL comittee apeals to "warm" stadiums but in new jersey in the january and febuary time it isnt yet so "warm."
Personally I believe that hosting it in Jersey should be able to have it either warm or cold weather premitting. It shouldnt be judged on how the weather is. In any aspect these professional athletes should be prepared to play in any weather. There so called "the best of the best". in this matter then why shouldnt this new stadium in new jersey not be able to host a superbowl?
Week 4 " Report: NHLPA execs taped telephone calls" p 4 : p 31
This article discusses telephone calls that were secretly taped by former NHL Players' Association executive director Ted Saskin. You think that you have privacy when you are making a personal call but in these times it's hard to trust anyone. In most states phone taping is illegal but in Canada it is allowed if the person recording the call is a participant on the call. This is absurb and an invasion of privacy. Bill Delaney, the NBA referee accused of fixing games was also a victim of wire and phone taping. Is it possible to have privacy in these times. People are so quick to accuse people of crimes and they try to gather information by any means necessary. The federal government is good for that! If a crime is in progress let it come out legally and ethically. Secretly recording someones conversation is wrong even though that conversation involves a crime. There are other ways to solve a crime and handle an investigation. Privacy is democracy!

The article I read was on Tampa Bay Bucs saying that they didn't want to serve hard
liquor in their stadium. The thing that I agree with the most on this is I belevie it would
make an increase in the amount of drunken scenes at the games. I've been to baseball
games where drunk guys get into fights about sports teams, and more than likely I think
that if they weren't drunk they most likely would of never got in the fight. Alcohol makes
people do stupid things, especially in a competative atmosphere like that. Theres a few
things good that I could see coming out of serving hard liquor, for one like they said in
the article it would stop people from getting so drunk at the tailgate, but on the business
side you could charge an outrageous amount for mixed drinks and people would pay for
them, so that means that the management would be making a lot more money than they
were before. I think that if I were the owner of the team I would fight against the city
saying I wasn't aloud to serve alcohol, beceause to me it should be my choice and
nobody else's. The only thing that wasn't in this article that I would like to know is who
owns the stadium, which would be the only way I could see the city getting away with
saying no booze, because if they own the stadium, then it's there call.
[Week 4] "A New Jersey Super Bowl? New stadium again raises question" V-10, I-21, P-13
This article talks about the posibility of having a Super Bowl in a cold climate. The Super Bowl is always held in a warm climate place, which I don't agree with. Teams play games all over the country all season long, then when the Super Bowl comes around, it's always somewhere really warm. Fans in the north don't get a chance to see a Super Bowl played in their city.
I also think that it's a disadvantage for northern based teams to play down there. Most teams from up north play most of their games in the cold, so at the end of the season I think it's safe to say they're used to playing in the cold, even though they have played some games in warm weather. I don't understand why the league always has it in a warm place, and if they are worried about not selling out, I'm sure that even if it's ten below out there will still be a filled stadium.
[Week 5]"Fox brings FSN Ohio into Big Ten Net carriage fight" V-10, I-21, P-4
Time Warner Cable has non stop sports always being televised on its station. Those sports are specifically the community's local teams. For example, the Cleavland Cavs and the Columbus hockey team. The fans wouldn't mind watching the Ohio college teams on cable if it were promoted.
This type of ordeal effects the sports industry because when dealing with the fans appreciation and people wanting to watch their local sports being played or aired, we should give it to them. The Big Ten Network should be available to all of the community people and networks should show the community's team as opposed to another Big Ten school being played at the same time. The question comes down to the cable company actually making a deal. Typically, the deal comes with a group or a bunch of people wanting the certain program aired. But we will see in time if they will pull their part for this one opportunity.
[Week 6] "Camo Deal Adds to NASCAR's Reach"
V-10, I-23, P-4
This article was about how Nascar signed a deal the the camoflauge company Real Tree. It also stated how Nascar apparel was going to try and make it into bigger name stores such as Dick's and Bed, Bath & Beyond.
I think this is a great thing for Nascar. To go along the lines with Real Tree, it stated in the article that Nascar fans are 3 times more likely to hunt and 2 times more likely to fish. This is exactly what Real Tree gear is for. This will obviously sell more apparel for Nascar with these statistics. This could also propel Nascar stuff into a lot more stores than it is now (i.e. hardware stores, camping stores) due to their affliation with Real Tree. With Nascar already coming to a new level of fan support I think this will help them shoot them even further up. I also think (and this may be pushing it) that if Nascar keep adding companies like this to their apparel their could eventually be a "Nike Racing." I mean this is a long shot, but if they keep their movement upward, I think it is definitely reachable.
[week 6] "Holdouts bear complex resons, unknown consequences"
V-10 I-23 P-29
This article talked about how when there is a holdout someone has to be the bad guy. The NFL is a business and everything must be done in a business like atmosphere. For example when a player gets drafted in the top 5 picks. Major money must be dealt with. The top pick gets the most and so forth.
The big holdout dealt this year was with JaMarcus Russell. He was drafted #1 overal to the Oakland Raiders. His agent felt he should do a holdout for 48 days because the contract that the Raiders came up with did not seem like a fair contract. However eventually he signed and is with the team. I feel bad for him because he had alot of bad press written about him because he was not in training camp. Acting as if he was the bad guy.
v-10 I-23 P-1
This article is about how the Washington Nationals will be opening their new ballpark next year without a naming deal. The Nats were going to name their stadium "Nationals Park" as an interim name, but they hope to have a deal with someone by 2009. I think that it is great that the Nationals are building a new stadium. It will be great for the city and all of Major League Baseball. I think that they will eventually find a sponsor for their stadium, it will just take some time. There is no panic for the Nats though because many other MLB, NFL, and NBA teams have opened stadiums without sponsorships.
Mike Hale said...
"Holdouts bear complex reasons, unknown consequences"
This article discussed the problems of holdouts in thge NFL and how these holdouts cause bigger problems then just having the player on thge team. There's too much money being thrown around at these draft picks and if one player hold outs for a certain amount of money, other players might try to get more from their respective teams.
I enjoyed reading this article. It bought out the problems of holding out from a team. Oakland Raiders' quarterback JaMarcus Russell held out from joining the team because his agent felt like his contract wasnt fair enough. Personally, I think alot of these players are probably happy with their contracts and their agents push for them to get more money and cause the holdout. I guess the agent knows what is best for the player.
[Week 6]"Camo Deal Adds to Nascar's Reach"
V-10, I-23, P-4
This article states how Motorsports Authentics has signed a licensing deal with Realtree, who cretas camouflage patterns. More products for NASCAR will be available now in camo such as folding charis, tailgating supplies, and hunting and fishing gear. They also plan to have the merchandise sold in big name chain stores such as Bed, Bath, and Beyond and Linen-N-Things.
I think that this is a very good idea for NASCAR. This will definately bring in a lot more money for them. I think that there are more people out there that hunt and fish and watch NASCAR more than we know. This will be bringing a different aspect to the merchandise that people buy as well. People will be able to have their favorite racer or organization on their hunting and fishing supplies. This can also result in a price change in merchandise too. Merchandise prices can be increases now that a racers name or the organizations name will be placed on the product. This mean stores will be making more, the product producer will be making more, and the player or organization will be receving money. This can also be a little bit of advertising for NASCAR. People that don't normally watch races that hunt and fish will see the logo on the supplies they are buying. This may prompt them to be a little more interested in the races and attract more viewers.
"Mats May Poen Ballpark Without Naming Deal."
This article is about the Washington Nationals who are set to open their $611 Million ballpark nest spring without a naming deal until 2009 which means, no one will have rights to the name of the stadium ecxcept for the team but, they also wont recieve any money for the mane. The team is looking for a deal that would pay them between 8 and 10 million dollars a year for naming rights which will rank them 2nd among MLB teams behind the Mets' expected figures in 2009. Nationals principal owner said, "There is no panis but thats something we certainly may wait on until '09."
I dont think this is a good idea because baseball just came back to Washington D.C. a few years ago so it isnt as big right now as they want it to be. And waiting until 2009 to get a naming deal will mean the tea loses out on at least 2 years of potential revenue.
[week 6]"Camo deal adds to Nascar's reach" Vol-10 i-23 p-4
This article is mostly about the company Realree camouflage is trying to make a licensing deal with the motorsports authentics. Realtree's is usually with the hunting and fishing supplies and gear and the Nascar usually has just caps and t-shirts.
I think that this is a very good idea that Realtree because it will attract so many more people. Most of the people that are diehard nascar or motorsport fans love to hunt and fish so they already have these types of products, so they are killing two birds with one stone with this plan. I also think that it will bring in more money for Realtree because they already have the people that buy their supplies and clothing on a regular basis and now you can buy your gear with your favorite race car driver. Its also good for nascar because they are getting they are getting more advertisement as well. There is one bad thing that i can see happening is that the Realtree merchandise might have to increase their prices because they are adding a motorsport to there item. But i think if there is a huge demand for it people will spend more on it.
This article talks about a group of NFL contract advisers trying to persuade No.1 draft pick JaMarcus Russell to fire his agents in the middle of his prolonged holdout from the Oakland Raiders. Calls were made to his mother stating if they can’t do the job, we can get the job done” says Zina Russell. Russell signed a six year, record rookie deal a month ago after waiting for 40 days. This was the longest of any No.1 pick in 20 years. During the holdout the raiders were contacted by agents saying that they can take an offer to JaMarcus to get the deal done. The NFLPA prohibits agents from soliciting players under contract to other agents. I think this was a risky situation. It seems to me that everyone was trying to make choices for Russell without his knowledge. I think he made a good decision not to deal with any outside agents but his own. I feel if you’re giving the opportunity you should take it.
[Week 6] "Holyfield, Main Events swing for funny bone in fight ads" V-10, I-23, P-34
Holyfield as we all know him is a big boxer and a good seller when it comes to paper view fights. As we saw when he and Tyson went at it, the popularity from that fight got everyone's interest. This fight pertaining Holyfield is going to fight the unbeaten Russian Sultan Ibragimov in Moscow in mid October. Typically, this fight would be advertised on HBO Paperview or Showtime. However, this time around, they will be using another paper view instrument On Demand or Direct Tv. In order to meet the financial needs, they will have to get more people to buy this fight to watch since the cost is at a lower price than normal from Paperview.
I think this definitely has a impact on the sport industry because the advertisers are trying a whole new different way of trying to get people to watch this popular fight. I feel that it is a big gamble because this tactic is dealing with people paying for something they have never payed for before. Will they trust the new scheme or not look twice at it? Hopefully sales will amount to what they want or better.
[week6]"Nats may open ballpark without without a naming deal"
This article is about a new baseball park for Washington Nationals. They are going to wait until 2009 to find a company which will have the name right for the ballpark.
That is not a clever idea. It is OK to having no names with the baseball park, for the teams like New York Yankees or Boston Redsox. They get much money from licensing and ticket sales. Also they have very strong fan bas. But for Washington Nationals, things are not going to be like that. It's only been few years having baseball team in the city so the fan base is relatively weak compare to other teams. And the team is not doing well. They can't expect much money from licensing products or ticket sales. The team has to fill up the money for building the stadium from everywhere they can.
At this moment, giving the good chance of getting at least 8 million dollars is too big loss for the team. Losing money is not a goal for the owners of the team.
(Week 4) "Big South, Crocs do deal for championships"
V-10, I-23, P-8
This article discusses the growth and expansion of a currently popular form of casual shoe wear called "Crocs." The Croc company signed a deal with the Big South, offering T-Shirts and Sweatshirts to athletes competing in Big South championship events. This opportunity will help the Croc company expand into the world of sports entertainment, and hopefully make them a much more successful company over the next half decade.
This article grabbed my attention because of my pure hatred for that shoe line. They are not shoes; they are not something that any respectable athlete would ever put on their feet. They are pathetic plastic water shoes that people walk around the mall in, or take their dog for a walk in. They are bright, obnoxious colored sandle-shoes with holes in them, and people still where ankle-high white socks while wearing them. They are absolutely ridiculous looking, and I am not happy that they are attempting to break into the sports and fitness world. Their first clothing line is expected to be released sometime this month, and the company wants to eventually be a common form of footwear for scholastic and collegiate athletes across the county.
[Week 6]"Nats may open ballpark without a naming deal" V-10, I-23, P-1,6
The Washington Nationals might have to open their new ballpark next season without a naming-rights deal in place. As we all know naming-rights have become huge in sports when it comes to stadiums and arenas. We associate professional teams with the stadiums they play in often named after a corporation. That corporation pays a large sum of money to have the naming rights to the stadium or arena for a number of years sometimes paying up to 20 million dollars a year.
In this case the Nationals have yet to work out a naming deal for their new ballpark. This is a big deal because they have already spent 50 million dollars over what they had hoped to spend on the ballpark. They hope to have a naming-rights deal for 8-10 million dollars a year. This means that the Nationals will lose 8 million dollars that they could have put toward the 50 million they went over. The owner and organization will now have to find other ways to make this money without a naming-rights deal in place.

[Week 6] "Club offer suite holder's the option to brand."
V-10, I-23, P-11
This article expalins how teams are now allowing corporations to decorate luxary suites with their brand and logos.
This is just another example of how sports marketing can always be taken to a new level. There will always be space to sell to a corporation or buisness for advertising. This new suites allow the corporations to put their name and brand everywhere they choose...to include the bathroom toilets. What's next?
I belive in the near future, logos and brand names will be featured on team uniforms. The athletes are not far from looking like a stockcar in NASCAR with brand names all over their bodies. I wonder how much Coca-Cola would pay for the seat of Kobe Bryant's shorts to bear their logo during a game. $5,000.00 a game? In the world of sports marketing, EVERYTHING is for sale.
[week 6]"NHL Set to roll out U.S network"
V-10, I-23, P-1
This particular article talks about the launch of an NHL network to will be soon available a number of subscribers as early as the beginning of the first week of the season. The NHL is following a strategy that is found similar as the NBA tv. A really awesome feature that the NHL network plans to do is make much of its programming available on demand. This new feature will allow all digital cable subscribers access to NHL Network content. Eventually this new network will turn into more of a U.S channel.
I being a big nhl fan I really like the strides that NHL are taking in order to get the popularity of the sport back on top. This new network will play up to 50 regular season games and along with the games that are played on versus and NBC fans will have more access to these games without paying for NHL center ice just to watch your favorite team’s games. There are even talks being made with ESPN to put hockey games back onto their program. For me being a Philadelphia Flyers fan it is rare that I can watch their games from Indiana because of being so close to Pittsburgh and now with this long awaited NHL network I will be able to catch more of my home teams game and it is very exciting.
The article i read about has alot to do with the goals im tryning to persu with my degree. It boiled down to the Oakland Raiders situation with the signing of there first round draft pick JeMarcus Russel. It stated that during the period that Russel contract was being debated and holding out. Other agencies was reaching out to him trying to persuade him and his mother to fire there agent and hire them to get the job done. Personally i do believe that its right to come at a player who's already under contract and attempt to switch them over. But none the less it is understandable, when it boils down its about money and if u are a agent viewing this its only right to try to bring a high profile client to your company. Furthermore in conclusion i do respect Russel and his mother decision to stick with there original agent.
[week 6] Nats may open ballpark without a naming deal
V- 10 I-23 Pg-1
The Washington Nationals have been buildi a new ball park set to open for 2008. The only problem is that they don't have a naming sponsor. They are currently orking with Wasserman Media Group to get a deal in place. They are seeking naming rights for the range of $8 to $10 million dollars . This is a big money maker for every professional team in the nation, becoming a new and grwoing way for companies to advertise in a way.
I think that this is a great article. It shows that teams are trying to come up with new ideas to make money, and a lot of it. The amount of money spent on naming rights is becoming a huge way for teams to become larger and be able to come up with new ways to make revenue. As for the Nationals, I think they are right for waiting for the best deal, rather than trying to get the quickest deal, even they need to be finished by opening day 2008. It is a great thing for a team and a city to get a ballpark, something for the hometown to be excited about.
[Week 6]"Nats may open ballpark without a naming deal"
V-10, I-23, P-1,6
This article discusses the decision of the Washington Nationals to go ahead and open their new ballpark without reaching a naming-rights deal. The ballpark is set to open next April with an interim name of Nationals Park until a naming-rights deal is reached. The Nationals are seeking a long term deal which would pay them $8 to $10 million per year, no deal meeting such terms is imminent. According to Mark Lerner, the principal owner of the Nationals, the team is in no hurry to reach a deal, and in fact they plan on waiting until 2009 to do such. They would rather wait for a deal which meets their needs than accept whatever offer comes their way. They are estimating that the construction will go $50 over the original $611 million over the original cap cost.
Though they are expected to go over their original estimate, I believe that opening the ballpark earlier without a deal rather than postponing the opening until a deal is reached will payoff in the long run. The naming-rights deal will come in time, so there is no point in rushing it and locking the team into long term contract with a low-ball offer. To me, it makes more sense to open the new ballpark and benefit from the new revenues it brings sooner rather than later.
[Week 6]"Nats may open ballpark without a naming deal"
V-10, I-23, P-1,6
The Washington Nationals of Major League Baseball have a spectacular stadium in the making and is set to open in April of 2008, but it may open without naming rights. They are working with Wasserman Media Group to get the naming rights to Nationals Park, but no deal is yet in place.
There doesn't seem to be a huge rush to get this deal in place. This could be a good thing or a bad thing. If they open in 2008 without naming rights and the team has a great year and can bring fans to the ballpark, they will get even better offers than they are now. On the other hand, if they have a disasterous year, sponsors may pull out and they can get stuck taking an offer they have to settle with.
[week 6] V-10, I-23, P-12 " Another Agenyc tried to recruit Russell, mom says."
During the holdout of the 1st overall pick of the 2007 NFL draft, JaMarcus Russell, a group of contract advisers tried to persuade Russell and his family to switch to there agency and fire his current agent. Russell ended up sticking with his agency and getting the 6 year $61 million dollar contract he had wanted.
I believe its good that he stuck with the same company and got the contract he wanted, but I just think that the players these days are greedy and selfish. The price tags that athletes get are ridiculous, especially when they have yet to even prove themselves. I think they should have to prove themselves in the majors before they get the big contracts. And as for holding out as long as they do is also crazy, like 5 million dollars less than the 50 million your already getting makes that big of a difference. I stand behind athletes like a Tony Romo who has yet to get a big contract, but is willing to work hard and prove he's worth the money. I think they should start out with the league minimum and when they prove themselves then they can get the big contracts.
(Week 6) "Camo deal adds to NASCAR's reach"
V-10, I-23,P-4
This article is about Nascar (Motorsports Authentics) entering into a lisensing deal with Realtree to produce camo racing gear. Although camouflage shirts and hats with Nascar emblems are not necessarily new, other things that they are coming out with such as camo fishing and hunting gear, is. They are hoping that this will appeal to a larger crowd and hopefully generate more revenue. For some reason Nascar has struggled with getting into sporting good stores. Somehow I don't understand how that is possible because it even says in the article that Nascar fans are three times more likely to hunt and two times more likely to fish than non-fans. That's why i really don't get why this has been a difficult thing for them to sell. A sport with the majority of fans being white hunters and fisherman it seems like this stuff should have been put on the shelves a long time ago. There is definately a market out there for this type of stuff.
(Week 6) "Teams say they are willing to share"
V-10, I-23, P-26
This article was about how all of the teams in the NHL compete against each other on the ice, but on the business side of things they work together to maximize their revenue. I think that it was smart of them to not be too proud to copy the ways that the NBA made money. The article talks a lot about how the NHL uses a lot of the same ideas that the NBA used. It seems very reasonable to put all of the ideas from each team together to make the most money possible. If one team is doing something different and its working, then why not tell the other 29 teams about it, so the NHL can grow together. Sure, one team can be the most popular, and be worth the most, but that one team can be worth even more if the sport grows as a whole. I really like the quote "We are all in the business of selling and promoting the NHL product and the ultimate goal is 30 thriving NHL markets". This shows that they are on the right track, trying to grow as an entire sport together.
(Week 6) "Eagles sell, wear throwbacks"
V-10, I-23, P-31
On September 2007 the Philadelphia Eagles wore there 1993 NFL throwback jerseys in their game against the Detroit Lions. This special days was part of the 75th aniversary celebration as part of the teams birth.
By promoting the throwback jerseys, the Eagles allowed an opportunity to sell a new form merchandice for their franchise. Three days before the game, the Eagles hosted a special midnight sale to promote the throwback jerseys. Personally I belive that this is a very intellegent way to promote the Ealges name and to make more moeny for their franchise.
[week 6] " Canadian Dollar"
V-10, I-23, P-22
This article was about the National Hockey League ( NHL) and how much the Canadian dollar has helped this league since it went up last year. According to the article, the US dollar used to cripple Canadian teams because it was so low compared to the American dollar. Since the dollar has gone up, there has been a net savings of arounf 400,000 dollars for every 1-cent raise in strength. Also since the Canadian dollar went up it has helped the league increase vits revenue for the last two years- which is around 2.3 billion dollars as of last year. The league is hoping that the Canadian Dollar stays this way, if it does not than the league might have to withhold returning escrow which would not be good under any circunstances.
This article definately deals with the chapter that we just touched on in class which was chapter 4. I think that it is a great thing that the Canadian Dollar is doing so well and can help out the league at such a tremendous amount. I think when you have teams in the league that do not have the same currency, it definately makes it harder to create revenue and keep everything equal.
[week 6] "Holdouts bear complex resons, unknown consequences"
V-10 I-23 P-29
This article explains holdouts that are in the NFL. It happens in the NFL because either a high draft pick isn't getting enough money or he doesn't want to play for that team. Jemarcus Russell was drafted number 1 this year in the NFL draft. He held out for the beginning 2 weeks of the season. He held out becasue his deal, he felt he wasn't getting a lot of money.
I understand that these pro athletes want to get high salaries and great endorsement deals, but when it comes down to the game, it's all about money. Sometimes it might not be for the love of the game because if fa player isn't getting what he wants he holds out. For another example: Brady Quinn for the Cleveland Browns; He held out because since he dropped in the draft he wanted more money rather than what he was getting. He almost got traded to the Kansas City Cheifs for a better contract. Holdouts happen but it is just part of the business part of the nfl
"FSN recommits to national show" week 5 p 5
The television network, FSN and its executives are going against the norm by airing non tradition sports programs that are appealing to sports fans. It's all about money and what network can attract the most viewers. Shows like "Beyond the Glory" and "Best Damn Sports Show Period" are not doing so well. They are pretty much gimmick shows that viewers are not tuning in to. Personally the "Best Damn Sports Show Period" is probably the worst sports show I have ever seen. The TV personalities, one in particular John Sally is dry and unamusing. FSN does attract alot of viewers for sport games now their goal is to keep those viewers tuned in. New shows like "SportsScience" may do the trick. People want to see new and exciting shows. This show seems interesting and appealing. It's goal is to explain how great athletes do what they do best...example: how the great Jerry Rice displays the art of catching a football. "Mind,Body, and Kickin' Moves" seems like another winner. Men love fighting and action...what better way to have a show that breaksdowns the science of martial arts. The "Greatest Sports Stories Never Told" is a show that brings to light athletes that don't get the glory. Men like to see the underdog succeed and hear about extraordinary feats that go unmentioned. These new shows are exciting and viewers and FSN are great anticipating success.
[week 7] "Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
V-10 I-24 P-5
The NFL is cracking down on what players wear in games. I believe that you should wear what you want to wear. However I understand that the NFL is a business and you must do what they say. Commissioner Roger Goodell has went to extreme measures as far sennding emails to NFL coaches and equipment managers to not let your players wear anything that is not listed in the players conduct sheet. I do have a problem with players wanting to wear color tape and arm bands such as Lance Armstrong "Live Strong" and then being fine for it. They are only allowed to wear white tape. If your team color is green and you wear green tape, you should not be penalized. That is what I call a pointless fine. Commissioner Goodell should not be so uptight about what kind of tape to wear and instead be worried about more important things.
[Week 7] "Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL out of hand" Vol-10 I-24 P-5
This article is about the NFL cracking down on what the athletes wear during the game. They have rules set that you can not wear any other color of tape on your arms and hands but white. Most of the football players these days like to make a fashion statement by matching there arms bands with their uniforms. For your first offense you will be fine $5,000 dollars and any after that will be and $10,000.
My opinion on this article is that i think you should be able to wear whatever color you want as long as it matches your team uniform. I know that the National football league is a business and they want there teams to follow strict rules or they will be penalized, but i think that this fine is kind of pointless. In the article is points out the Packer's A.J. Hawk is wearing a sleeve length shirt with green arm and wrist bands and also his chin straps are not buckled as well, so he is pretty much a walking fine waiting to happen. I dont think that most of the players are looking at it to be a fashion statement they just want to look good out there while playing a sport they get paid to do. Who wants to wear white all the time i know i wouldnt. After reading the list of all the different ways the players can be fined with their apparel is just rediculous i think. Its just an easy way of the league to get money and they should worry about more serious issues instead of what they are wearing on the field. As long as the teams athletes are performing and producing money for the league they should be happy.
[Week 7]"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
V-10, I-24, P-5
This article was an interest to me because it talks about how fines are being placed on NFL players for equipment and apparel violations. Fines can range from $5,000 to $10,000. Violations include not completely buckling chin staps, wearing gloves with a contrasting color piping or defacing the NFL logo on gloves, wearing hands on tape that isn't opaque white, and wearing uncovered Lance Armstrong bracelets.
I both agree and disagree with this article. I can see that the NFL wants to keep their players all uniformed, but as stated in the article "when you're in a contest and getting kicked and jerked and tackled and tackling, you can't expect to keep your tie straight." I think that they may also be throwing at violations for safety reasons. Two of the violations are not completely buckling the chin straps and wearing eye shields that are not approved. This would be for the players own safety. As for having to wear opaque white tape on hands and arms is a little over the top. If they are wearing the colors of the team, there is no reason they should be fined $5,000. I also don't agree with the players not being able to wear "Live Strong" or "What Would Jesus Do?" bracelets. I feel that is completely wrong that someone can't wear a "Live Strong" bracelet in support of cancer paitents throughout the United States. I do agree with fines that apply to jerseys that are too small and do not cover the shoulder pads and other equipment. It's not the equipment part that I agree with but the fact that sometimes these huge players have jersey's that are too small and more than shoulder pads are hanging out.
[Week 7]"Upshaw: Apparel Fines From NFL 'Out of Hand'"
V-10, I-24, P-5
This article was very interesting to me. If talks about the fines that are given out to players for different uniform violations (ex. tape color, uniform size, etc.). It also talks about how equipment managers and trainers are going to start to be fined as well.
First of all, I think it's crazy that equipment managers and trainers are going to be fined. It is ultimately the players decision on what color or size of jersey they wear. I think it is also crazy that players have to wear a certain color tape or wrist bands. What in the world is wrong with a plater wearing team colored tape or wrist bands? I actually think it looks better to have team colors than boring black and white. It is also insane that players can't wear "WWJD" or "Livestrong" bracelets. That to me is saying that teams can't pray before a game or look to the sky after a touchdown. I mean what is wrong with wearing a bracelet? Before we know it players won't be able to have tatoos.
[week 7] "MLB soaks up another attendance record"
V-10 I-24 P-6
For the fourth straight year, the attendance records continue to sky rocket for Major League Baseball. Bud Selig has already been looking to the future to even surpass this year. Although some remain skeptical about next year being as good as this previous one, Selig still remains hopeful and believes the numbers will not take a huge hit. This year, the league finished with a total attendance of 79.5 million which is 4.5 percent better than last year, and 18 percent higher than it was five years ago. Commissioner Selig beliecves this is due in part to the recent growing of the popularity of baseball, and has put a high standards already for the 2008 season.
As an avid baseball fan, I think that this is great. It was almost getting to a point where it seemed like not as many people cared about the sport and enjoyed it for what it was all about. I think what helped the attendance this year was the number of records that were being chased and broken this year for example Barry Bonds, wherever he went until he broke the homerun record was a sellout, also with Craig Biggio, Alex Rodrigues, Frank Thomas, and Jim Thome all having milestone seasons. I think it is great because it seems like children these days are starting to draw their attention and interest away from the sport mainly because they are either not very good at it or just find it very boring. I can only hope that this sport continues to grow and surpass even more records in the future.
"Will clubs back MSG's digital-rights play?"
V-10 I-24 P-01
This article tells us that the NHL team the Rangers might not have earned their money locally, and want to gain control over digital rights. This has been going on behind closed doors, since June of 2006. But over the last seven years the MLB and the NBA along with the NFL have been centralizing their online efforts believeing that selling new media sponsorships across the entire leagus would lead to increased revenue. Some people agree with them and others do not. RSN saying that " We think digital rights can be best exploited on a team-by-team basis loacally through the team and its local media partners."
I would also have to agree with RSN, you have to have your fans be willing to buy your things and not just have corporate sponsors. That will let the fans know that oh they don't need our money why should we even try to go watch them.
the league fined the team $200,000 last April for maintaining nyrangers.com but the legal experts expect the NHL to prevail, saying "courts generally uphold the rights of associations to enforce anticompetitive rules in order to maintain their business."

"Upshaw: Apparel Fines from NFL "Out of Hand"
This artile was very informative and I enjoyed reading it. Ittalk about how players are beig fined for wearing anyhting that isnt part of the regulated uniform. The article talked about how some players really dont care about the fines so trainers and equipment managers are going to start being fined.
Personally, I disagree with this rule to a certain degree. I think players should be able to wear simple things like different sized socks and accessories that really wouldnt make the player look like an individual. I hate in college that all players have to wear the same color gloves. I know it is a team a game but players should be allowed to express themselves.
[Week 7]"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'"
V-10, I-24, P-5
This article discusses the NFL's increasingly strict policy on player equipment and apparel. Commisioner Roger Goodell is threatening to fine not only the players who violate the league's policy, but also the team equipment managers and trainers. Gene Upshaw, the Executive Director of the NFLPA, says that these violations are simply "way out of hand". Players can be fined for things such as wearing the wrong color tape, wearing "Live Strong" bracelets, or wearing a shirt with unacceptable sleeve lengths. NFL spokesman Brain McCarthy says that the league is simply enforcing the policies that were already in place. One NFL player says that the league could earn as much as $2 million this season alone from collecting on violations.
Though I believe that there should be some guidelines as to what players are allowed to wear and what they aren't, I have to agree with Upshaw on this one. These fines have gotten way out of hand. Who really cares what color tape the players are wearing? Whether their sleeves are showing or not? And for wearing "Live Strong" bracelets, you'd think the league would be proud to support such a cause, not fine players for visibly wearing them. As for players wearing jerseys which are too small, if it helps prevent offensive lineman from holding, a penalty which occurs far too often, then I don't see the problem with it. A couple of the policies are for the safety of the player, so they make sense, but for the most part, these policies are a little too much if you ask me.
[Week 7] "NBA raises China Games sponsor - list total to 11"
V-10, I-24, P-7
As NBA has became one of the most globalized sport in the World, the league's marketing department is busy doing their job.
This article says about the sponsors that NBA is going to have in China for the China Games 2007(Pre-season game). Now you can tell NBA became an worldwide, since Yao Ming is playing well in the league. So we can say that next to MLB, NBA is going to spread its market to the world. Teams are playing their pre-season games in both Europe and China. The leagues is putting much effort for these games now. In China, basketball is very famous sport and many people pay attention because of Yao. So NBA started aggressive marketing out there. Number of sponsors show how attractive the market is. Currently, 11 companies are being with the league. These companies are going to put NBA mark for the retail and for other advertisement as well.
I think this will benefit both the league and sponsors. League will earn money from the sponsors and make the games in China more popular. At the same time, sponsors will have attention from Chinese basketball fans and it will affect their revenue. So this is a good opportunity, and I guess the league will expand this kind of event more often.
[Week 7] V-10,I-24,P-5
"Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand'
The NFL has been cracking down on apparel violations with minimal fines, but with Roger Goodell in charge things are getting alot more strict. Players and teams can be fined thousands of dollars for wearing the wrong color tape along wrists and arms. Not only are players and teams fined but now equipment managers, trainers, and coaches can be fined if their players are caught wearing inappropriate apparel.
I think the new rules are ridiculous. Goodell and the NFLPA are taking all the fun out of the game and going way to the extreme to control the way the players and team look. Players should at least be able to express themselves on the field, most people view such things as exciting and entertaining . I agree with Goodell on the way he has handled the off-field issues but I don't agree with this.

"NBA raises China Games sponsor-list total to 11"
Raising sponsors or getting sponsors is a very important deal. China has nearly doubled their sponsorships having 11 this year. Some of them include Adidas, DHL, Coca-Cola, and Gatorade. By having these sponsors, and being affiliated with the NBA, China will take some of the proceeds that are made from these sponsors. They aren't exactly partners but they are sponsors.
I feel that this helps the sports industry tremendously simply by expanding sponsors and names world wide. Collins, the VP of of Global Partnerships for the NBA said "None of this was going on in 2004 and the other key differences is that we will have 20 different consumer promotions in nearly 20,000 retail locations around the China Games this year. Having said that, China will bring in more spectators and viewers simply by expanding the names of the sponsors.
[Week 7] "NBA raises China Games sponsor-list total to 11"
V-10, I-24, P-7
The NBA has now got 11 sponsors for the China Games. These games include preseason games between NBA teams and China teams. This is the 2nd time such an event is taking place. Adidas looks to be the sponsor leading the way.
As we all know sponsors can be huge in any sports related event. With sports being so big in our country and people always tuning in to their tvs to watch, sponsors can use this as a good way to get their corporation name out there. If your watching a game or at an event and see Adidas or Coca-Cola advertising everywhere you may be compelled to drink a coke or buy some shoes. This is especially good in the respect that the global sports industry is growing more every year. The NBA has players from many different countries and one of their biggest names, Yao Ming, coming from China.
[Week ]"Firms take brands beyond the stadiums at college campuses, into intramural events"
V-10, I-24, P-12
This article explains how major companies such as Pontiac and X-Box are working with the American Collegiate Intramural Sports (ACIS) to sponser intramural sports on college campuses.
This is another example for all students looking to enter the sports marketing/management field that there is always something new to try to market. I feel that this "experiment" is an extremely creative way to market sports and products. Just when one may feel that there is no way to further advertise in professional sports or major college events, sports marketers decide to attempt to market to lesser known events. While these intramural sports are not televised, they are still popular among thousands (if not millions) of college students which creates more potential customers for the sponsers. This is a great step not only for sports marketers, just also for the intramural sports programs. The fact is that sponsers bring in money which in turn allows colleges to create better sport events to bring in more sponsers. This could potentially bring in millions for colleges and I admire the creativity.
[Week 7] "Upshaw: Apparel fines from NFL 'out of hand' V-10,I-24,P-5
This article shows just another reason why the NFL is being called the 'No Fun League'. It discusses that now, if a player is out of his exact uniform, which includes tape color, length of socks, and many other tiny apparel violations, the equipment managers and trainers will now be fined. Gene Upshaw, the executive director of the NFL Players Association, has strongly disagreed with this by stating "its out of hand, way out of hand." I understand the NFL has an image to uphold and that it is a corporation, and instead of wearing a shirt and tie to work, these men are expected to be in complete uniform, but to fine people other than the player for what they are wearing is ridiculous. I don't believe that tape color is that big of a deal. If it's white or a team color, it shouldn't matter. As an avid football fan, I'm not all that concerned with how big the jersey is or if his socks are rolled up under his pants. I agree with the team looking in sync, but sometimes when people try and take your head off, your socks may possibly come out of order. The league also fines them if they're wearing a visor in their facemask. They MUST get league approval to wear one. I don't understand why they care so much. If they want to wear one, what concern should the NFL have. I am all for team unity, but to fine people other than the player themself, FOR TAPE COLOR, is a way out of hand.
[week 7] NBA raises China Games sponsor-list total to 11
v.10, I-24, p.7
This article talks about how the NBA has received more sponsors for the China games this pre season. The league has doubled its partners for its pre season games between the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Orlando Magic in Shanghai and Macao. This year sponsors include 11 companies such as adidas, coca-cola, DHL, Gatorade, and many others. This was the second time the NBA will hold games in china. There will be 20 different consumer promotions in almost 20,000 retail locations around china games this year. In my opinion this is a great opportunity for the NBA to expand its sponsors this year. I think both the league and sponsors will benefit from this. This will allow the NBA to earn more money from sponsors and more viewers, this will also help games in china become more popular. On the other hand this will allow sponsors to get their names out as well.
[Week 7] "NBA raises China Games sponser-list total to 11"
V-10, I-24, Pg-7
The China Games now has 11 sponsors from the NBA, which include Adidas and Gaterade among others. This is the second year that the NBA is returning to China to play pre-season games. The popularity of basketball is growing fast in China and this is one more step to make their program larger.
I think this is a wonderful start to increasing the size of competitors in the future of the NBA. I would really like to see other sport programs from different countries expand. Soccer is such a popular sport in Europe and I think its good to see other countries competing against each other. I think that so many other sports should interact like this. Helping China expand their basketball league is a good start to allowing for world competition more often than every four years at the Olympic games.
"NBA raises China Games sponser-list total to 11"
V-10, I-24, Pg-7
I think that this is a great oppurtinty for the NBA to get their name out there and take advantage of the money they can get. With Yao Ming in basketball today that's enough for China to have a good revenue for basketball. Basketball isn't that big in China but after Ming came to the NBA he showed the world that Asian's can play basketball. I beleive that he opened the way for other countries to hop in and show that they can compete with the NBA.
The NBA may not be what is was 30 years ago with all American guys going to a game with less people than a division 2 basketball game, but it is a huge thing to go today. Celebrities from around the globe are seen at games all the time, they spend thousands of dollars because it's it's a good time. People will spend money anywhere to say that they sat next to any celebrity, no matter if it's Jordan or Trump. Anybody that's in the stands knows who's in the same place they are. China is doing a smart thing by sponsoring more things in the United States, because the more they get there name out there the bigger the sport will be in there country. People come for the atmosphere and with a population of Asian people in the United States, it's in their best interest to make it public that they support a cause.
[Week 7]"MLB soaks up another attendance record"
v-10, I-24, pg-6
With this years success in attendance for baseball it will finally give the NFL a run for their money. Usually during the month of september all the focus in the sports world is on football, but thats about to change. In the overall league of MLB they finished the 07 season with a total attendance of 79.5 million. A total of four club teams sold more than 95% of their available tickets and another four clubs sold about 90%. These numbers are evidenice that the popularity of MLB continues to grow. Just don't know what else could be done in the marketing department for the MLB if the numbers continue to grow throughout the whole league.
[Week 7] "NBA raises China Games sponsor - list total to 11"
V-10, I-24, P-7
Being that China is a large country, basketball is one of it's popular sports. The NBA is starting a contract with China to sponsor the NBA in the country. Sponsoring the China basketball league will bring in more fans and players because it would have the NBA name around.
I feel as though this is an opportunity for the NBA and the country China to produce more athletes. The NBA would profit from this because they would be able to scout more athletes from that country. Maybe China will allow some of their athletes come over to the U.S. for basketball. This would be a great outcome for the both of them.
NBA raises China Games sponsor-list total to 11
v.10, I-24, p.7
Keith Jones
The NBA has increased its sponsorship for their pre-season games held in China. This year sponsors include 11 companies such as adidas, coca-cola, DHL, Gatorade, and other reputable companies. This is yet another year the NBA seizes the opportunity to hold games in China. This is a great opportunity for the NBA to expand its sponsors in China and create a revenue and interest of the NBA in its global expansion phase. This is the true meaning of the catchy slogan of the past,“ the NBA is fantastic”. Both the league and sponsors will benefit from this marketing move. The NBA will increase revenue from sponsors and attract more viewers. The popularity of basketball is rapidly increasing in China and more talent is developing in the country and across the globe. As the NBA expands the interest grows and the competition gets better. The NBA has a marketing strategy that is aimed to compete with it competitors. The NFL, MLB, NASCAR, and FIFA should be on the lookout because the NBA is looking to take over the industry.

{Week 6} Will clubs back MSG's digital rights play?
V-10, I-24, P-01
This particular article discusses NHL teams fighting for digital rights for the league. In June 2006, it was voted by the league governors to centralize the disparate Web operations. This fight was taken public by suing the league and accusing it of operating under illegal cartel.
Through many legal battles and such; compromises have been made to allow (to a certain extent)sponsorships, Web control, and other related operations to be controlled by the league and specific teams.
In this article the writers showed in a certain light the struggles of gaining control over local sponsors and control to advertise those sponsors through out the internet and media and so forth. The NHL is the most recent league to go through this process, but no the only league to go through it in general. The MLB, NBA, NFL, MLS, ect. have all had similar legal issues do deal with.
It's not an easy action to deal with, but it can be possible through the right operations.

This aricle is about marketing and how well Nationwide seems to marker within the sports field. This has given Nationwide insurance alot more acknowldgement and they enjoy doing it. Nascar is going to be one of the biggest marketing places for them. In the last 4 years sports ad spending has increased more than 250 percent and this is what gave nationwide insurance a "nudge". I think this definately fits into what we learned in class a couple weeks ago about sponsorship and why sports are sponsored with ads and also the publicity that it brings these companies.
I think that nationwide is being smart about sponsoring nascar because they are insurance and deal with car insuance, so both of them go hand in hand in a way.
[week 8]"ESPN prep game gets title sponsor" V-10 I-25 P-7
This article talks about how ESPN will sponsor its own high school football All-American game. Under Armor has signed on as the event's title sponsor. The game will be played on January 5 called the Under Armor High School All-American Game and be aired on national television live on ABC. I think it is really cool for UnderArmor to sponsor this type of game.
Every kid wears some type of under armor during a football game, I did when I played in high school. Under Armor has focused its marketing efforts on young athletes. I think it would be cool to play on national television and be playing in the All-American football game.
[week 8]"ESPN adds early rounds at Masters" v-10 1-25 p-10
This article is about ESPN finally getting Augusta Nationals aired on their channel. They will air the first and second rounds on ESPN and ESPN HD. Augusta National has a new chairman Billy Payne and he is making many new changes. AT&T, IBM, and ExxonMobil are sponsoring the Limited-Commercial-Interruption format as well. The Early rounds of the Masters have been on USA since 1982. I think that it is a good thing that the masters are moving the early rounds to ESPN. ESPN is the sports leader on tv. I believe that they should have first right to any sporting event going on as long as they have room to air the event.
“ESPN prep game gets title sponsor”
[week 8] V-10 I-25 p.7
This article talks about ESPN hosting its own high school football all-American game. Under armor has signed on as the event’s title sponsor. They will receive venue signs, commercial inventory, hospitality and uniform, they will also receive gear and apparel rights during the game. The game will be held on Jan. 5 in Orlando, known as the Under Armor High School All-American game. The main focus will be marketing young athletes. Under armor has also sponsored other sports such as baseball, softball, and lacrosse, and expects to add a fifth sport in a few months. Players selected to the all-American football game will participate in a skills competition, as well as a banquet, and tour of Disney facilities. Burger King and the U.S. Marines Corps has signed as the title sponsor of the skills competition. ESPN is hoping to get at least two more sponsors for the all-American game. I think this will be a great experience for the young players invited to the all-American game. On the other hand I think it is a smart idea to focus its marketing efforts on young athletes. Almost in any sporting event you will see someone wearing under armor. Overall I think this will be a very big event, not only for the high school athletes but Under armor as well.

{week 8}"ESPN prep game gets title sponsor" V-10 I-25 p-7
This informative article was interesting. On january 5th 2008, ESPN will sponsor its own high school football ALL-American game. The game will be on national television. It will be aired on ABC and the game will be called the UnderArmor High School All-Amercian Game.
I think this game will be an experience for the kids. What kid in the world wouldnt want to be on national tv. The kids will be wearing UnderArmor apparel. I think it will be a positive experience for the kids.
This article is about criticism that baseball's reliance on primetime television is shutting out their younger viewers who might not be able to stay up that late to watch the whole games. Baseball and their TV exectutives are realizing that kids and watching more of the later games then they are watching the afternoon games and most of these kids re on the east coast, which means that sometimes they have to stay up past midnight to see thr end of the games. Baseball's ratings for the later games are getting more viewers from all demographics except adults who are 55+ in age. Supprisingly, the youngest age group (6-17 year old) and making up the same portion of viewers at 8 p.m. as there and at midnight. Basicaly saying again that these younger kids are staying up late on some school nights just to catsh the end of their favorite teams games. And if an east coast team plays a west coast team, the game is usually broadcast around 10 p.m. here to make up for the time difference. I think that baseball recognizes this problem but is in no hurry to fix it because it would damage their ratings by trying to air games that were reasonable for everyone because what works one person, just might not work for someone else.

"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
On October 28th the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins will be playing a football game in London, England. For the first time the NFL will have on field advertisements. Six different sponsors will have their logos at field level on rotational signs in the stadium, just like at Soccer games. The signs will be placed behind the end zones and on sidelines. The NFL plans to play one or two games a year across seas.
I agree and disagree with the games overseas. I agree with it because I think it's a good thing to market to different countries and get them excited and interested in football, but I disagree with it because it takes the game away from fans who pay to see their teams play over here. Overseas is a far and expensive trip to see your team. I also think the advertisements behind the endzone isn't such a good idea, I think players may become distracted by the rotating signs.
I recently read a article about ESPN sponsoring a high school all american football game. I think it is a excellent idea a chance for these kids to be able to display there talent just like the top recruits in basketball do at the McDonalds All-American game. This also opens up a lot of oppurtunities for companies to put there hand in this american tradition of high school football and start giving with lower budgets sponsorship and aid to help build some of the other programs outside of national powerhouses like De La Salle(CA) or Southwest Carrol (TX. i think this is great idea and will be a success. Furthermore they said that Under Armour will sponsor the events which is to be held January 5th in Orlando. It seems like its gonna be like a mini pro-bowl for high school students with the skills compitition and other challenges to test there skills and put on a show for the audiencethat they are definitely going to grab.
[Week 8] V-10, I-25, P-4 "How Much is A-Rod worth to an RSN?"
In this article, A-Rod is discussed through his agent of being one of the most highly payed athletes in the world. They say that that a team should be responsible for bringing in more of the total income essentially and having more people to watch their sport. However in this case, A-Rod is by far the reason why spectator viewing has jumped to the networks 300% mark.
This is good in the sport industry because not only is this idea being recognized to see what the league and other sport teams can do in the future, but it is raising spectators to a whole different level.
[Week 8]"London NFL game to have on-field ads" V-10,I-25,P-3,7
This article talks about the NFL game between the Dolphins and Giants taking place in London on Oct. 28. The 90,000 seat stadium sold out in only a couple of hours. For the first time in a NFL game, there will be on field sponsors including Bridgestone, Visa, Coors, Reebok, General Motors and Canon. This strategy of on-field sponsorship is used in the soccer games played in Europe.
I think that the on-field sponsors for this game is a great idea and could pay off substantially for the sponsors. The NFL is trying to grow internationally much like MLB and the NBA. Although the majority of NFL players are American, the game in London has been talked about for awhile and the fans over there are really looking forward to it. I believe this game can only help the NFL grow and make more profits. We may even see some on-field sponsors in the United States soon.
Week 8] V-10, I-25, p-5 "AEG print ads tout Staples premium seats"
The article talks about the Staple Center premium seats and suites and how they are taking a new marketing aproach to improve sales. AEG is beginning to print full page ads in such magazines and newspapers like Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Newsweek, and Sports Illustrated. AEG believes this will improve the amount of costumers by advertising in a new way.
I believe this is a good marketing aproach because it will let people know about the premium suites that wouldnt normally think about purchasing one. The article mentions how they place ads in airports in L.A and other close cities. I know if I arrived in L.A. on a business trip and saw the premium seat ads I would consider purchasing a suite.
[Week 8] "Changing the Fight Game"
V-10, I-25, P-29
This article explains the rise of MMA fighting and Professional wrestling in the U.S.
The "fall" of boxing has given way to the rise of Mixed Martial Arts Fighting. The Ultimate Fighting Championship has seen dramatic increase in fanbase over the last 5-10 years and along with that, new fighting federations have formed. The fighters and this relatively new sport have created more opppurtunity for sports marketing. As a fan of MMA myself, I am constantly noticing the fighters wearing more and more brand names of weightlifting supplements, gyms, and other fitness products on their way to the ring and during the fight.
Another rising "sport" (I use the term loosely) is professional. wrestling. While wrestling may be fake and the winner pre-determined, it is still followed by millions of sports fans and will provide increasing number of marketing oppurtunities in the future as new companies form.
This artlicle shows that there is not only new ways to market and advertise exsisting sports, but there are always new and growing sports to capitolize on.
[Week 8]"Bode aboard 'Myspace for skiing'"
V-10, I-25, P-4
This article explains who professional skier Bode Miller is starting a networking site for skiers. On the website, Skiers will be able to see resort and equiment reviews, trail conditions, instruction, user-generated material, and video from content partner World Championship Sports Network. This is going to be similar to Myspace but focusing on skiing.
I think that this is a very good idea to play around with. I know as a skier myself that it will be nice to look on this site for equipment reviews. I don't have much family or friends that ski, so I don't have many people to look to on their opinion of certain equipment. When you go to the store too, of course they are going to try to sell you the most expensive equipment and not the best. It will also be nice to just jump on the site to look at trail conditions and not have to surf the net looking for the resorts website. The resort reviews will also be nice to look at, especially if you are going to travel to ski. This will inform you of what your best options are as far as resorts. If this takes off big, other athletes may start this up pertaining to their sports as well. This will also promote the athlete and work in their favor. It is nice to see that the website will include instruction. Fans of Bode will now be able to see what his techniques are. This could be beneficial to skiers.
[Week 8] “ESPN prep game gets title sponsor” V-10 I-25 p.7
On January 5th, 2008, ESPN will be airing its first ever high-school all-star game. It will be called the UnderArmor High School All-Amercian Game. As shown in the title of the game, UnderArmor is the main sponsor geared towards young athletes. They will also have a skills competition, and that is sponsored by the Marine Corps and Burger King.
This game better do well because there is another high school all american game played in San Antonio and it is a very well known game. This new game has lots of potential, and will do well with Under Armor sponsoring the event. They are a great sponsor for young athletes because many athletes, young or older, wear Under Armor and are very well known. I think it will be a great experience for the young athletes to be exposed to this kind of attention. It will prepare them for the bigger stage, college.
[Week 8] V-10, I-25, P-3
"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
The article I read dealt with the NFL having a game in London with the Giants and the Dolphins. It talked about the stadium having on field ads too in the corners of the endzones like the rest of the world have in their soccer stadiums.
I think that this is one of the best things that the NFL could do for endorsements. I was watching ESPN the other day and they had Lebron James on it talking about when he went to China. He said when he was introduced at the school everybody in there knew who he was because the NBA is now a very diverse league. They talked about how everybody in China now is wearing Nike basketball shoes because they want to be just like the celebrities of the United States. If the NFL has other games in different countries like it plans on I think that their overall profit will go up because people in other countries will start to like the game. The NFL is a business just like any other business, their main goal is to make money, by expanding their horizons they are going to make more money.

" ESPN prep gam gets title sponsor"
This article was about Under Armour sponsoring the highschool all american game. This is definately a great move for Under Armour. They stated in the article that the product was built around football, so to be able to sponsor something as big as this definately opens alot of doors for this complany. They also stated in the article that they are marketing to younger people, and by taking this sponsorship it is a step in the right direction. This will definately get the Under Armour name out there. We also talked about this in class a couple weeks and remember touching on the topic of Under Armour and how they have become more popular in the last couple years.
[Week 8]"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
V-10, I-25, P-3, 7
This article discusses the advertising aspect of the NFL regular-season game between the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins which will take place in London October 28. This will be the NFL's latest attempt on exporting America's most profitable sport. The game will be advertised more like a soccer game with rotational signs at field level featuring 6 NFL sponsors. Eventually, they could even add on a 17th regular-season foreign game so that each team will be able to play overseas each season. The game in London is already showing huge profits for the NFL.
Though I believe this is a great marketing and globalization opportunity, I believe this success ay be short lived. The NFL has tried to globalize in Europe for years with little success. Even if they do continue to experience success, I still don't like the idea. In my mind, the NFL is our sport, it has been established in America for decades, has millions of loyal fans, and is a multi-billion dollar industry. Do they really need to cheapen it by throwing on another foreign game for some extra cash? What about the loyal fans in America, isn't this sort of cheating them? Especially if they were to ever have a Superbowl overseas. Even if one could afford to go overseas to see their team it would be impractical. The NFL has a great tradition going in America as is, why fix whats not broken?
[Week 8]"London NFL game to have on-field ads"

This article talks about the advertising plot of the NFL regular-season game between the New York Giants and the Miami Dolphins which will be in London October 28. This will be the NFL's newest attempt on expanding America's most profitable sport.
I think that this is just a waste of effort because the NFL tried to expand the NFL in Europe and it's not really doing that great. So by bringing these teams" which are average" won't attract anybody in a vast majority. It will make money but it won't expand like they want it to. They should of at least brought better teams with better players like the Colts w/ Peyton Manning or the Patriots w/ Tom Brady. Then that would of been a larger profitable game.

" ESPN prep gam gets title sponsor"
In this article ESPN stated that on January 5th, 2008, it will be hosting the first ever highschool allstar game. Under Armor has signed on as the event's title spons. The event will aslo hold a skills competition as well as a banquet, and tour of Disney facilities and will be aired live on ABC.
Under Armor contiunes to blow up the sports market. It is one of the leading sponsors in football, baseball, lacrosse, and many other sports. This event can also be comapred to the McDonalds all american high school basketball game in which its sponsors target young athlets. Now Under Armor is focusing on a younger market and continues to grow as a corporation in the sports market. I think this game is a great opportunity for the kids to get their name out on a national level and a good way to recruit.

"ESPN prep game gets title sponsor"
Under Armour is definitely a strong growing sports brand nowadays. Even thoug it's not such a big brand like Nike or Adidas, still this corporation makes significant progresses every year.
At this moment, it is very clever for the Under Armour to support those young athletes who are hoing to take Kobe Bryant or Tom Brady's role. By doing such a work, the company will make benefits from several points of view. First, these young athletes who attended the game may become company's future center of influence. Also, these opportunities give the company to catch up with Nike or Adidas with the value of brand name.
I don't think many people throughout the world know Under Armour brand yet. Sponsoring the huge event like this will give them a chance to have many prospects' attention.
So far, this company has sponsored sport events which are more famous in America.
They'd better expand their sponsoring and marketing efforts on basketball or baseball so that the world can see them.
[week 8] "ESPN prep game gets titile sponsor" Vol-10 IS-25 P-7
This article is about the brand Under Armourhas signed on as the event sponsor for the high school all-american game. THis game consists of 80 high school football players that are ranked nationally. It will be held on Jan 5 2008 in Orlando FL. Under Armour's main focus points of marketing has been towards the young athletes. It has also sponsored Lacrosse Classics for the past two years. Under Armour isnt too old of a product but its becoming more and more popular within the sports industry. THe players can also attend a skills competition which is held the day before the game and it is sponsored by Burger King along with the US Marine Corps as a supporting sponsor. Intersport and ESPN hope to add at least two more sponsors for the high school football all-american game to get promotions. Personally i love the brand Under Armour. I would take a pair of Under Armour shorts way over any pair of Nikes. With all of its variety of products out now there is so much you can choose from. This year all of our gear for basketball is Under Armour and let me tell you we look pretty sweet in them. I can see this company booming within the industry because of the large increase of demand for their products.
[Week 7]NBA raises China Games sponsor-list total to 11
v.10, I-24, p.7

"London NFL game to have on-field ads"
Week 8 V-10, I-25, P-3
The city of London England is hosting a NFL that is going to take place October 28, 2007. Because of all the excitement and high expectations; tickets sold out in just a few hours. For the very first time there will be on field sponsors who include: Reebok, Visa, Coors, Bridgestone, Canon, and GM. This sort of on field sponsorship is used in soccer and is very successful.
The NFL is competing with other major sports to attract the most viewers and make the most money. This on field sponsorship is a great idea considering it works for the most popular sport in the world, soccer. This is a great move for the NFL to attract more of the international market. This is basically common sense if you want to attract more viewers; you have to expand around the globe. This move will increase the popularity of American football and at the same time increase revenue. If this game is a success there is opportunity for more games to be held in different countries around the World. The NFL is already the most popular sport in the United States now they are going after the top spot in the World.
[week 9] "Bridgestone will sponsor Super Bowl halftime show"
V-10 I-26 P-3
Bridgestone tires will sponsor the halftime show at this years Super Bowl. Bridgestone is the world's largest tire manufacturer. This is a Japanese owned manufacturer that will be the first foreign company to sponsor a super bowl. This is a new beginning for foreign companies to sponsor such an event. However i think this is good and bad. It's good by more foreign people will watch it but bad by football is America's past time so the sponsor should be a company from America. This tire will become the NFL's first official tire. That could a good marketing idea for them because everyone watches football.
[week 9] "NFLPA examines false rumor fallout." V-10 I-26 P-6
This article is about a false rumor that was spreading around the NFL Players association. The rumor was that Benard Berrian's two agents Eugene Parker and Roosevelt Barnes were about to be suspended. When Berrian heard about this rumor he fired the two agents. He signed with Drew Rosenhaus last week. I think that Berrian was right about his decision to fire his agents. I think that to be a good agent you need to tell your athlete the truth and let them know everything that is going on.
[week 9]"Bridgestone will sponsor Super bowl Halftime show"
The Bridgestone tire corporation will have an important job ths Super Bowl. They will sponsor the halftime show at this event. The Bridgestone tire corporation is the world's leading tire manufacturer and this corpoaration is Japenese based owned company. THis will the first time a foreign company will get the chance to sponsor at the Super Bowl.
I think this will be a great opportunity for the Bridgestone tire corporation. Thye are already the leading tire comany in the world, but they will sponsor the halftime show of the miost watched event every year.
"Front Row to help Royals make new video boards pay off"
[week 9] V-10 I-26 P-21
The Kansas City Royals are currently undergoing a phase of renovations at their ballpark that will be complete byt the 2010 season One of the upgrades is a new 100 ft high - 85 ft wide high definition jumbo tron. It will be the largest in the world and will include everything from stats to lineups. They plan on selling advertisements from the $25,000 to $40,000 range with an exclusive package that will exceed 6 figures for advertisements to be put up throughout the entire stadium in inning increments.
I think that this is a great way for MLB teams to generate more revenue. If they can find someone willing to throw 6 figures at the them for a ten minute period, by all means they should take the offer. If they even got someone to take the half inning increments which is $25,000, they can make a pretty nice profit for doing nothing more than putting a few words up on a screen. As for the screen, it will be pretty unbelievable to see, not many parks have a 100 foot screen in center field that projects to all the fans in the stadium. The stuff that they will be putting on there such as line scores and advertisements will make going out to the ballpark all the more enjoyable.
[week 9] NBA season preview "NBA by the 5's" Vol-10 Is-26 P-34
In this article it has three titles and under each of the heading it discusses 5 subtitles. I only choose one title and it is Five things we'd like to see implemented in the NBA. As you can tell by the title it is a season outlook of this years NBA's season. It goes into more details with the different outlooks. The first thing is to tweak the weighing of the draft lottery system to eliminate any perception of teams tanking to better their chances in the draft. All this is for so each team has a fair chance at getting a good player. It talked about the whole Tim Donaghy scandal and that they dont need something else to give a team an edge over someone else. The second subtitle is take a page from the NFL and create a league-funded pool of money to help teams pay for new arenas. This is a good idea because arenas are cheaper than stadiums for one thing and another is that it saves the team money so they can buy other stuff. The third one is vary the in-arena experience. This part is talking about trying to make each arena that you visit to watch a game should have its own personality. A lot of the arenas have the same style of setup and if you are paying money to watch a team play you should have a memorial experience. The fourth one is make the first round a best-of-five game series. I personally like this idea a lot because it speeds up the whole process of getting to the really exciting gaems in the playoffs. The last one is since David Stern is so gung-ho about expanding the game internationally, how about adopting some rules from international play? I honestly dont think that you'll see the internation rules and regulations come in the NBA. You would see a lot of drastic changes happening if they changed there style. The biggest would be the trapazoid paint. You should see a lot of unhappy fans too if you change up a sports rules t osomething else to compormise for international players to play in the U.S. The NBA has been a huge organization for several years and you should mess with if if its working good. I know tha there are tons of international players that come from their country to play in the U.S. because there are so many more opportunities here, but we should stick to tradition and keep the NBA how it is. The NBA was made in the United States so you should stick to our rules. If you want to play with international rules and regulations go over seas and play.
[Week 9] "Bypassing highlights, NBA goes for the heart" V-10, I-26, P-4
In this article, remembering the good times and the harsh times for the NBA is an extremely dramatic moment. Bringing up the issue of the referee who had some encounters with illegal gambling to the slam dunks that puts smiles on everyones face. The NBA wants to put out ads that will help bring back the fans that might have gotten a bit dis drought when the scandal with the ref happened. They want to show every aspect of the game from winning, to losing, to funny times, and dramatic times. They want to reach out to 18-34 year olds in hopes of brining back an even more fan club of the NBA.
I think this is great in terms of raising awareness and money in the sport industry. Although, this ad will cost up in the tens of millions of dollars, it still is a good way to get a hold of the fan club. Marketing these cool new ads involving great players will in turn put a bright future on the NBA.
[Week 9]"Bridgestone will sponsor Superbowl halftime show"
V-10, I-26, P-3
This article discusses the decision on Bridgestone to go ahead and fork out the $9-10 million dollars in order to sponsor the Superbowl halftime show. Bridgestone will be the first foreign company to ever sponsor America's most popular event. Bridgestone sees this as a great opportunity to get their name out there as the premium brand in tires. In fact, they have a three year sponsorship deal with the NFL that will distinguish them as the first "official tire of the NFL".
First off, obviously having your company's name associated with the Superbowl in any way should be beneficial to your company. With that said, this looks to be worth the money they are putting into it, if their goal is to get their name out there, this is certainly the way to do it. The Superbowl is annually the most watched television event in America, so Bridgestone will certainly get the exposure they seek. One thing I believe is getting a little out of hand with the sponsorships is that it seems like the NFL has an "official" sponsor for everything, I mean tires, come on, what do they have to do with football? The fact that they are the "official tire of the NFL" isn't going to have any influence on my preference of tires.

Everybody knows the slogan, 'i love this game' for NBA. It's been used since 1992 when Gooby crafted the campaign. It was very successful and NBA got advantage of this advertising activity a lot. This article tells us how the league has renewed the advertisement campaign to, 'NBA: Where Amazing Happens.' It definitely is a advertisement campaign based on emotional advertisement appeal. With
"where amazing happens" slogan, NBA's new TV commercials are on air with variety of versions. I think this effort is related to the leagues' refree gambling scandal. By touching fans' mind with the terms of passion, competition, teamwork, and the history, NBA seeks its way to retain the fans love of this game. This emotional method will make them feel attached to the league. There are various of campaigns on TV now, specified in teams. Local fans may feel more affection as the campaign become more recognized. Now the commercials' main targets are 20s~30s male, who are the main fan base of NBA. Leagues marketing department is looking forward to spread it to more sub targets like women or aged or so on. This is very appropriate timing for the NBA to make a connection with the fans.

“76ers looking to bring the spirit back”
[Week 9] V-10, I-26, P. 28
This article talks about the 76ers and how do they make the team matter again to Philadelphians? In 2001 the Sixers set a franchise attendance record with an average of 20,560 fans per game. Last season the Sixers were ranked 29th out of the 30 NBA teams with an average of 15,011 fans per game. This season Sixers are hoping to reverse the decline in fans by, enhancing the live experience, and add campaigns that promote the concept of teamwork. As we all know Allen Iverson played a key role in the sixers marketing efforts since he was drafted from Georgetown University. They also plan to bring in different entertainment acts before, during and after games. They are looking to sponsor theme nights, such as Hispanic heritage night and military night. In my opinion the 76ers is one of the worst teams in the NBA. They have no team chemistry, nor talent. People pay to see them entertain. I do not think they have done a good job with that. On the other hand I do believe the sixers can get back their fans but, it will take a lot of Iverson’s to regain the excitement of the Philadelphia fans.
[week9] "Penguins Owners Get $56 Million"
This article was about the Pittsburgh Penguins owners splitting up $56 million between the marjoity owners including former player and capitan Mario Lemieux, and Ron Burkle. The $56 million is part of %100 million financing deal that the team completed on last Thursday. The Penguins have about 50 people who share ownership but a handful of those 50 including Lemieux and Burkle, own 90 percent of the team. Nine years ago the team filed for bankruptcy and Lemieux and agroup of partners saved the dying franchise. At this time, Lemieux was owed by the team about $32 million in deferred pay. But instead of recieving the money, he converted his deferred pay into equity in the team, purchasing his partial ownership. This most recent financing deal comes on the heals of a 30 year lease for a new arena set to open in 2010 that is being largely funded by casino operations throughout the city and state. The team which threatened to leave Pittsburgh, met with city and state officals in March who agreed to get fundung for the new arena and keep the team in town. The remaining $25 million of the $100 million dollar deal is to pay on the teams debts. Companits like National City Corp., and Bank Hapoalim are also contributing by eating a percent of the debt.
[Week 9]"76ers looking to bring the spirit back"v-10,I-26,p-28
Last year the sixers were ranked 29th out of 30 NBA teams with an average of 15,011 fans per game. Thats mostly to the fact that they traded there marquee player Allen Iversion who led them to the 2001 NBA finals where they set a franchise attendance record of 20,560. The only reason I found myself to watch a sixers game was because of Allen Iversion. Now since he is gone the team has a bunch of nobodies and the organization is faced to find away to market this team to bring the fans back into the building. There new billboards that feature the idea of teamwork and hustle aren't going to cut it. The only success to bringing in fans is to put a team together that knows how to win game in and game out. The one thing that I do like about there marketing efforts is the season long theme this year will be about celebrating the 25th anniversary of the 1983 championship team. All us Philadelphia fans can do is reminisce in our only proffesional championship over the past 25 years. Pathetic I know, but I got big hopes for the flyers this year.
[Week 9]"76ers looking to bring the spirit back"

This article talks about how the 76's want to try and bring their fan base back. Last year, they were 29th out of 30 NBA teams and for the past 5 seasons since 2001 they have had declining attendance. For this year, they have theme nights planned, section vs. section battles, military night, and new music, animation, and video clips on the arena's scoreboard.
I think that the the new promtions that the team is presenting is a very good idea to try and bring the fan base back. I think maybe they should have some themes towards kids and family activities though. Parents love to take their little kids to family activities at sporting events. I know that I enjoy college night and firework night themes at the Pirate games. I don't usually go to watch the game, but go to enjoy the theme night. Also, maybe putting in some new food places could help a little too. People love to eat at sporting events, so instead of just generic food they could put in some chain restaurants. The new thing at events too is that you can send a text with a message to a speical number and your message will show up on the screen. This could help them some what too because people would enjoy that and its something different. It also said that many give aways before used to be bobbleheads and such of Allen Iversion who the team no longer has. Give aways now should be of items that say 76ers on them such as a hat so that it pertains to the team and not just one individual.
[Week 9] "Bridgestone will sponsor Super Bowl halftime show" V-10,I-26,P-3
Bridgestone, the world's largest tire manufacturer will sponsor this year's Super Bowl halftime show. This marks the first time the show is sponsored by a corporation outside the United States. Paying the millions of dollars to sponsor the event will surely help them in the long run.
Already a huge and growing corporation sponsoring the half time show will help them become even bigger and more known throughout the world. I say that because the Super Bowl is broadcasted in over 200 different countries and is the most watch event on tv every year. This was a very smart move on the part of Bridgestone and I believe that they will see the effects of this soon after the Super Bowl.
[Week 9] "Bridgestone will sponsor Super Bowl halftime show" V-10, I-26, P-3
"The tire of the NFL" is now the Bridgestone tire! This foreign tire company landed the deal to sponser the halftime show for the Super Bowl this year. Every year a wealthy company pays millions of dollars to get word of their product out to the American public. I think that this is just wonderful. Competition drives our entertainment during all game breaks, whether being a commercial or halftime show. I can't wait to see not only what Bridgestone brings to the table, but what every company throws at us this year. Crazy stunts and commercials are not only just what we need for our entertainment, but they do leave an imrint of a product in our memories. I still seem to remember when Jason Alexander parachuted onto the football field with a bag of tostitos at a Super Bowl. This will probably always be in my memory as a good Super Bowl moment. Hopefully Bridgestone takes advantage of this opportunity and leaves us with something to remember.
(Week 9)"Penguins Owners Get $56 Million"
v-10 I-26
This article was about the Pittsburgh Penguins owners splitting up $56 million between the marjoity owners including former player and capitan Mario Lemieux, and Ron Burkle.9 years ago the Pittsburgh Penguins filed for bankruptcy and Mario Lemieux and a couple of partners saved the distrought franchise. At this time, Mario Lemieux was owed by the team about $32 million in deferred pay. But instead of taking the money, he converted his pay into an equity in the team, purchasing his partial ownership.
This should of happened a long time ago but the Penguins had huge money programs. They sucked for years until they drafted Sydney Crosby, a young athlete who's skills have put the Penguins back on the NHL map. Last year's playoff birth shocked the city of Pittsburgh, nobody expected it to happen so fast. Since they were in a losing season for a couple of seasons. They wanted to leave unless the city payed for a new stadium. They are working on the stadium now. So it is very good that they payed him and the other owner back because they basically saved the Penguins Franchise.
[week 9] "Bridgestone will sponsor Super bowl Halftime show" V-10, I-26, P-3
The Super Bowl halftime show will be sponsored by Bridgestone, the largest tire manufacturer in the world. It is the first time a foreign based company has sponsored this enormous event. This is their opportunity to get their product, which is already worldwide, to become even larger. Just by this simple tactic to have your name attached to an event, it will boost their corporation even higher in the market. They fork up millions of dollars to be seen all across the world and now the NFL must live up to their side of the deal and host an event that everyone will want to stay on the couch and watch. The past couple years, the halftime show, for me, was an opportunity to grab a beverage and slice of pie. I have not been satisfied with the halftime performances as of late. Bridgestone is putting a lot on the line, and are depending on the NFL to really make it big. I am only one person though. The Super Bowl is aired in hundreds of countries, and will pay off big in the long run for Bridgestone. These events are always a success for sponsors. Even if the show isn't too good, the NFL still rakes in millions and so will Bridgestone.
[Week 9] "New talent keeps baseball alive in Japan." V10, I-26, P-14
This article expalins the rise of the popularity of baseball in Japan despite the absence of some of Japan's biggest stars.
This shows a great oppurtunity for future sports markers and managers to break into the international sports world. Despite Japan's loss of stars such as Ichiro, Hideki Matsui, and Matsuzaka to the MLB in recent years, baseball still grows in popularity in Japan. With the sports industry quickly becoming saturated with marketers in this country, it is promising to see that there are still relatively untapped markets in other countries. As baseball continues to grow in Japan, new stars will arise and possibly grow in popularity in the U.S.; hopefully providing more job oppurtunities for those of us looking to enter the field.
[Week 9] V-10, I-26, P-28
"76ers looking to bring the spirit back"
The Philadelphia 76ers are asking how do they make their team matter again to the people of Philadelphia. The team came in 29th out of 30 teams in attendance last season. This year, the Sixers’ front office is seeking to reverse five straight seasons of attendance declines. Its game plan includes enhancing the live experience at the Wachovia Center and ad campaigns that promote the concept of teamwork instead of any single player.
If you ask me I don't think ads or live performances are going to do much to help with bringing attendance to a basketball game. Wins and big name, dominant, and marquee players are what keep fans interested and coming and when you trade away your biggest money maker and don't get much in return your showing me you don't really care about what the fans come to see. I don't know if the 76ers think Andre Igoudala and Kyle Korver are the answer and maybe in a couple years Igoudala will be, but right now he's not going to take your team to a championship. I think the front office needs to do a better job shopping around for another big name player and do a better job drafting and get the fans interested again.
[Week 9] V-10, I-26, P-28
"CAA signs MMA brand TapouT"
Mixed martial arts fighting has become extremely popular over the last few years, and TapouT is a brand that has also become increasingly popular as the sport grows. CAA Sports is now representing TapouT and I think that this was an excellent choice for TapouT to make. I have seen the television show where the TapouT crew trained fighters and it was a neat show to watch. There are beginning to be a great deal of other tv show that are all about MMA fighting and when you flip through the channels it isnt to hard to find a UFC fight on. I think that the TapouT brand of clothing and other items is an excellent idea. "Mask" has been around the sport for many years, and has helped the sport grow into what it is today, so I think that he has a good idea about what type of gear fans will want to wear or purchase. Getting CAA to represent them is only going to increase their sales and make them even more money than they were without them.
As i went through the articles of the Journal one article stood out very easily it was a article about the philadelphia 76ers attendance problems. Me being from Philly know all about the spirit that was once as high as the moon like back in 2000-01 when they had one the eastern conference finals. The sixers as i would say was cool back then. But as a team struggle over years i would suppose its fan basis would fail as well. In my mind as well as any other logical sports fan mind all know that the sixers aren't getting good anytime soon and im sure that the office in the Wachovia Center do not appreciate losing money every year. So this year they are trying to spice things up a bit by adding themes to game nights, heritage nights, nights dedicated to the military. Anything to help them boost there attendance which last year was 29th in the league. Personally i knew this was coming every since they traded away fan favorite Allen Iverson. Thats Why im a KOBE Fan..lol...thanks
Week 9, "Bridgestone will sponsor Super bowl Halftime show"
V-10, I-26, P-3
The Super Bowl halftime show will be sponsored by Bridgestone the largest tire manufacturer in the world. It is the first time a foreign based company has sponsored the Super Bowl. This advertising scheme will definatley help them and get their product out there more. Hopefully the show will be worth watching and help Bridgestone out. I'm not sure if it is worth it to even spend all this money on sponsoring the halftime show or even having commercials during the super bowl. Sure they are great commercials but do they really impove sales enough to be worth spending millions of dollars on a thirty second ad. I guess any exposure is good exposure so i'm sure it will help Bridgestone sell more tires in the long run.
"76ers looking to bring the spirit back" [Week 9} V-10, I-26, P. 28
Since the departure of superstar Allen Iverson, basketball has become non exsistence in Philadelphia. This article discusses how the 76ers can make basketball matter again to the fans of the city of brotherly love. In 2001 when the 76ers played the Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA Championship, they set a franchise record for attendence with an average of 20,560 fans a game. Last season the 76ers were ranked at the bottom of the league with an average of 15,011 fans a game. This upcoming season the 76ers are planning to increase the attendance by providing a better entertainment experience for the fans and add campaigns that promote teamwork concepts. Bringing in different and more popular entertainers is also on top of the agenda. They are also looking to sponsor theme nights such as Hispanic heritage night, military night, and other creative themes that will attract fans. Lack of talent is the real issue in Philadelphia. Since the departure of A.I, there hasn't been a superstar to take his place. Philadelphia is a sports town and Philadelphia fans demand winning franchises! The 76ers have not won a Championship since 1983 and with the players they have now things won't change! Fans will come when the talent gets better! The marketing team can bring entertainment to an all time high and fans still won't show up. Philly wants to win so if management doesn't bring in some superstars and some quality role players to win some games and bring a Championsship to Phildelphia, fans will be a no show!
Week 9, "Bridgestone will sponsor Super bowl Halftime show"
V-10, I-26, P-3
This article is about the superbowl. Even though the superbowl is not for another 4 or so months, they need to start planning for it since it is such a big event. The superbowl halftime show is going to be sponsored by Bridgestone- which is the largest tire manufacturer company in the world. I think this is a great opportunity for Bridgestone to get their product out there. There will be alot of publicity and hopefully people will recognize the company and the Bridgestone will be able to have more profit from this. Even if the superbowl is not a great show ( hasnt impressed me in the last couple years) it is still a great tool to advertise your product. I think that bridgestone definately made the right choice by choosing to sponsor the superbowl.
Week 9] V-10, I-26, P-13
"Indie cred: Team-less Bode adds 3 Sponsors"
As of May 12, 2007, Bode Miller, a wrold class renoun olympic downhill skier, has left the United States Ski team. Since then he has collected three sponsors, KJUS, WCSN, and Go Fast energy drink, amounting to over $1 million over the next three years. This is previously somthing that has never been done before, to become an independent skier in season. If all goes as planned, Bode expects to grow much attention within the media and to wish others to follow in his footsteps. Although Bode is an independent racer he still skis under "the umbrella" of the U.S. sanctioned body in which he will wear a US competition suit with only his helmet shownig his sponsors. In my perspective this is a very bold move on Millers part. Somthing that will draw much attention form the media hence more air time for his sponsors. In the years to follow to say if others will follow will take a great deal of thought. If skiers in the future do decide to become independent what would that have to say for the U.S. representing its athlets. It will almost be as if these skiers were not skiing for the United States, rather then representing just themselves. It will be very interesting to see what will happen in the future for the sport of downhill sking and its athlets.
(Week 9)"Penguins Owners Get $56 Million"
v-10 I-26
The owner of the Pittsburgh Penguins split $56 million between the marjoity owners including former player and capitan Mario Lemieux, and Ron Burkle. Nine years ago, the Penguins filed for bankruptcy and Lemieux plus other partners saved the troubled franchise from complete disaster. Now, Lemieux was owed about $32 million in deferred pay by the Penguins. Instead of taking the money, he decided to become a partial owner of the team, becoming an important part of the franchise once again.
This was an incredible move by the Pittsburgh Penguins, who had huge money programs. They've been pretty awful for the past half decade or more, before getting the new Pittsburgh God, Sydney Crosby, who single handedly brought the Penguins back to life. In fact, he made things happen even faster than expected by Pittsburgh fans, and got the Pens into the playoffs. The Pens had a bit of a run-in with Crosby who threatened to leave the team if there was not a new stadium built for the up and coming team. Now that there is a new stadium in the works, Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins are on the road to quite a few successful seasons.
[Week 10]" Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers" Vol-10 IS-27 P-10
This article is about how David Beckham brought more people in to watch the Los Angeles Galaxy. Not only did their attendance rise for their home games but also when they went on the road their were extra fans there to watch him play. Beckham only played in 5 out of the final 18 regular season games due to an injury and people still came to the game just to see him in person. On his arrival he helped increase the Major League Soccer organization increase there attendance 9% from last season and delivered the two highest rated MLS games ever on ESPN 2. To be honest most of the fans could care a less if Beckham ever scored a goal just as long as he looks sexy out there on the soccer field he will be pleasing thousands of fans. The only reason i would watch a soccer game on ESPN is if David Beckham was playing. If i had a choice to either watch Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat play or some Joe Shmoe play soccer im going to watch the NBA. So the MLS is trying everything they can do to bring in more people to watch there league. I like soccer the sport but i can not watch it on TV for some reason. I personally have no real interest in watching MLS on TV, but i love watching him run around and hoping that he will take his shirt off when he scores a huge goal. I think it was really smart of the MLS to bring David Beckham to play in the United States because he is one of the most popular soccer players out there now and not to many people had the opportunity to go watch him play in England. So what the league did was pay him millions and millions of dollars to play in United States hoping to make the MLS generate more money than before. Which i think that by reading this article and the numbers they said for the attendance and TV ratings it increased in great numbers. So i think it was good choice on the leagues part because they still gained revenue into their organization. They didnt loose anything by bringing in a star player from a foreign country. David Beckham was not the only player that was delivering for the MLS in 2007. Cuauhtemoc Blanco's arrival boosted the average attendance for the Chicago Fire from 14,550 to 16,490 at the end of the season. So the MLS was not all about good looks and nice bodies to raise the attendance at soccer games it was also bringing in extremely good soccer players that we've never seen before trying to make a difference.
[week 10] "Knicks' premium seats carry steepest price" V-10 I-27 P-4
This article talks about how Madison Square Garden is selling lower bowl VIP boxes for $800,000 each per year. This is the most expensive courtside real estate in the NBA. Madison Square Garden is also building eight additional new premium seats for about $300,000 called the Lofts. They are located about 15 rows above center court over the lower-level tunnels. The cool thing about getting one is that you have the access to all MSG events. There will be around 300 events that you can attend. That would be awesome to see all the entertainers come through New York. I believe that it is a little expensive but if you have the money then go ahead and buy one. It would be better if your company bought one, so you could take clients and personnel.

[Week 10] “Knicks’ premium seats carry steepest price” Vol-10 IS-27 P.4
This article talks about Madison Square Garden this year is selling lower bowl VIP boxes for $800,000 each per year. This is the most expensive courtside real estate in the NBA. They will also have MSG build eight additional new premium areas called The Lofts that will go for almost 300,000 each year. Both are expected to give MSG an additional $500 million in revenue. They also mentioned this will be one of the best facilities real estate in New York. The VIP boxes and Lofts come with access to all events at MSG; there will be approximately 300 this year. Madison Square Garden will also include a new score board and a new LED ribbon board. New Jersey Nets is also looking to build great new luxurious suites in the 2009-10 season as well. In my opinion this is a smart way to increase revenue, and growing demand. The advantage is, on top of the new suites you have the opportunity to attend all 300 events. On the other hand I do think the price for the suites are a little expensive. I’m not really sure if this was a great move, considering their putting all this money into a team that is not very good in the first place.
[Week 10]"NBA makes download store a fixture for regular season"
V-10, I-27, P-7
This article talks about how the NBA is permanently adding a digital download store to its site as a part of its video distribution efforts. The price to download a game will be $2.99, but that is not finalized. Games will be available as soon as the morning after the game. Not every game will be available, but the ones that contain notable achievements or happenings will be. Also mentioned is how the NBA wants to improve their site with a deal with Facebook that will include a newly developed basketball fantasy game and a redesigned mobile version of NBA.com.
I think that this is a great idea for NBA. Young fans will love to be able to have a favorite game downloaded to their computer to watch repeatedly. I wish that the NFL would do something like thing because I know that I would love to watch Superbowl XL again. Some of the plays were great in that game and I would love to see it over again. You don't always necessarily tape a game because you don't know how it is going to turn out. It could be the best game ever or the most boring game. This will give fans a chance to see the games replayed, even if they missed it the night before on t.v. I think that the NBA will make plenty of money off of people. If this goes over big in the NBA, other pro sports organizations may pick up this concept too. I also think the Facebook fantasy game is a good idea too for the NBA. Mostly every college student that has a Facebook checks it every day. College and high school students also love their fantasy teams. I think more people will get involved with the fantasy game when it is right infront of them on Facebook and not have to go searching for it on a website.
[Week 10] "Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers" V-10,I-27,P-10
This article talks about David Beckham and the effect he had on MLS this year. He helped raise the leagues tv ratings and nearly doubled attendance at stadiums. He did this by only playing in 5 of the LA Galaxy's final 18 games. Beckham also had the number one selling jersey among soccer players.
Many were very critical of the David Beckham signing bringing him to the United States and MLS. Many thought that he was being payed way too much to come and that there was no way he could help the sport that much. Not only has he shown that he can make his team better, but he has also shown how he can help the league grow. MLS awareness is growing and more people are tuning in to watch games on tv. Once Beckham is healthy and playing in every game I believe this will help the league grow even more. In my opinion the money spent on David Beckham was a great investment for soccer.
[week 10] "Knicks premium seats carry steepest price." V-10, I-27, P-04
This article explains how Madison Square Garden is selling lower VIP boxes for $800,000, which is the most expensive in the NBA. MSG is also building eight new premium seating areas called the lofts. These will be sold for $300,000 per year. This will get more team revenue for Madison Square Garden. Another new addition this year for MSG, which is the second oldest NBA arena will be a bran new score board.
I think this is a good thing for Madison Square Garden. It is an old arena but they are building state of the art new VIP boxes and new scoreboards. By doing this more people will attend events held at the Garden and will increase revenue.
[Week 10] "Knicks' premium seats carry steepest price" V-10 I-27 P-4
Madison Square Garden, the second oldest arena in the NBA, has stepped it up to improve the games for the fans. They are now selling lower VIP box seats for a measly $800,000 per year. These are the most expensive seats to purchase in the NBA. Another addition MSG is making is the new premium seats that will be called The Lofts, which will go for $300,000. By these new additions to the Garden, it is predicted to bring in about $500 million more dollars in revenue. The fans will also be suprised to see the new scoreboard and new LED ribbon board to make it a better experience for eveyone. The seats will be accessible to the buyer for all 300 MSG events in the year. This is a great way to increase revenue for the facility and the team. It will definitely pay off in the long run. Even though the Knicks are not playing very well, MSG hosts some of the best entertainment in the country.
[week 10]"NBA makes download store a fixture for regular season"
v-10, I-27, P-7
This article dicusses how the NBa will add a download store. THis store will be on the site and fans will be abnle donload games for the price of $2.99. This deal isnt finlalized. The NBA alos wants to make a deal with Facebook.com that will developed the basketball fantasy game.
Personally, I thisk this good for the fans. I would love to watch a great game over again instead of just watching highlights on sportcenter or downloads from youtube. I alos think thge facebook fantasy will also be good because most college students are on facebook and alot of people are ready do the NFL facebook fantasy.
[Week 10]"Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers"
V-10, I-27, P-10
Turns out that David Beckham did deliver the numbers that MLS have been looking for. I would sure hope that he did considering how much the LA Galaxy is paying him and the sponsors also. Beckham increased the leagues average attendance 9 percent from last seasons and also gave the two highest ranked MLS games ever on ESPN2. He only played in five of the Galaxy's 18 regular season games. That has to hurt the payroll when the highest payed player in the league only plays about 27% of your regular season games. The galaxy in did lead the league in attendance with an average of 24,252 spectators. The one main issue that still haunts the success of the MLS is their tv raitings and thats what the hope to fix next year in order to improve the MLS in the U.S.
[Week 10]"MLS signs first offical automotive parts sponsor"
V-10, I-27, P-9
After previously sponsoring NASCAR, NAPA Auto Parts has recently signed a three year seven figure deal for MLS wiht Soccer United Marketing. NAPA also sponsored the Mexican national soccer team through SUM in 2006-07. Now NAPA is reaching out to new markets to promote their products.
I believe investing into the professional soccer market because its seems to be one of the fastest growing sports other than NASCAR in the nation. As the years pass by soccer is becomming more and more popular in the United States. By making this decision to sponsor MLS, NAPA makes a bold move in a generally positive growing market. In the years to come I believe NAPA will become one of the leading sponsors in MLS as is Gatorade is to football. Indeed a smart move for NAPA and it can only get better for the years to come.
[Week 10]"NFL Net looks to feds for help"
V-10, I-27, P-1,39
This article discusses the feud between the NFL Network the the country's largest cable operators, Comcast and Time Warner. Negotiations between the two sides has come to a stalemate, so the NFL plans to get a third-party arbitrator involved with hopes that they can ulitimately gain vertical integration carriage through the cable companies. The NFL argues that the Comcast and Time Warner are showing preferential treatment toward networks which they own, such as Versus and the Golf Channel. Comcast and Time Warner argue that NFL Network is asking for too much money for being a single-sport channel. The NFL comes back by saying 95 of the top 100 cable shows in history are NFL broadcasts. Nonetheless neither side seems to be budging.
In my opinion, Comcast and Time Warner are foolish for not carrying NFL Network. The NFL has the largest market and therefore the largest demand of any of the major league sports in the U.S. With that said, I don't see the concern of the cable companies with it being just a single-sport channel. If they carry the Golf Channel, why not NFL Network? I believe it would be well worth the extra money the NFL network is asking for. On a side note, I believe the NFL could really expand the NFL Network by having a package in which they have a 32 channels, one dedicated to each team. This way fans could have constant access to their favorite team. They could fill airtime with player profiles, historic games, team news, coach and player conferences, etc. Just a thought, I know I'd like it.
[Week 10] "Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers"
V-10, I-27, P-10
After hearing all this hype about David Beckham I thought that the soccer ratings in the U.S. would definitely be much higher than last year. Even though Beckham brought in a great deal of publicity and interest in soccer they MLS still had the same turnout as last year. I suppose that its only the first year he is in the league, and there are positive results from his presence, but hopefully this interest will only increase next year and in the following years. Even though he didn't participate in many of the games due to injury he still managed to be responsible for 10 percent of the entire leagues total attendance.
"NBA makes download store a fixture for regular season"
[week 10] V-10 I-27 Pg-7
Last year the NBA experimented with downloading videos online during the playoffs. This year, they have decided to keep it as an option to buy the games that you might not be able to watch in your area. The cost was $2.99 per game without commercials and will remain so throughout the 2007-2008 regular season. They are also working on deals with youtube, facebook, and apple to help market their website.
I think it is a great idea, a cheap and easy way to watch the game that you want if it is not being aired around you. You can watch commercial free basketball for a small price whenever you want, a great way to reach out to those who are big fans of the NBA. I also think it's good if you are on the road and can't get your team on tv but have a the internet handy.
(Week 10) "Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers
V-10, I-27, Pg-10
This article is about how David Beckham brought publicity and popularity to soccer in America. He raised ratings and almost doubled attendence at LA Galaxy games by only playing in five games due to injury. When he arrived he helped increase the MLS organization increase their attendance nine percent from last season and delivered the two highest rated MLS games on ESPN. Some people were very critical about paying Beckham so much money to come play in the US, but to be honest this was the best and pretty much the only way to get people more interested in watching the MLS. I'm really happy he came to play over here and in a few years more people will realize that he is helping the league and i think the US will be able to bring more big name players to the MLS and really generate interest.
[Week 10] "Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers" V-10,I-27,P-10
The article states information about David Beckham and the huge effect that he had on MLS this year. He raised the leagues' television ratings and closely doubled attendance at many stadiums. He accomplished this by playing in 5 of the LA Galaxy's 18 games. Beckham's jersey also sold the most out of any MLS soccer player.
This is good because he did get all that money to come over and participate in a league that's not so good. So many people thought he would come over and automatically shine. But he was benched many games out of the season. Games sold out to see him play and he didnt. So the games he did play increased the ratings.
Week 10 "Knicks premium seats carry steepest price"
V-10, I-27, P-4
This article discusses Madison Square Gardens new premium seats that they offer. These seats are the most expensive seating in the NBA. The article explains that these seats are VIP boxes that are 5 rows above the court and have between 12-16 seats. All of the seat have been sold out. This is interesting to me because the Knicks are HORRIBLE but still manage to sell out premium seating at steep prices like this. I believe this is because the city of New York is such a huge city with many business's looking to impress clients with new and impressive seating such as the new VIP premium seats. This shows me that a team like the New York Knicks can still be horrible and charge whatever they want and not worry about the seats not being sold.
[Week 10] "Transformer; fox Sports Robot turns into liscensed toy"
V-10, I-27, P-10
This article was about the new robot toy that Fox is going to be releasing. They are planning on releasing the robot in December and has been used as a commercial bumper. They created the robot to help appeal to younger viewers under the age of 24. This robot will also have a very big part in fox's opening in the superbowl in february. This robot action figure has been appearing on fix broadcasting since about 1994 and is just now going to be marketed.
I think this is a great idea because now maybe the network will get more people who are under the age of 24 to view their network and watch sports. This could also be a money maker for them if the robot is a hit in stores and they plan on selling the toy from 16.99 to about 19.99. According to this article that i agree with as well is that it will be a oliday booster and hopefully for the companies sake make some profit.
[Week 10] "NFL Net looks to feds for help"
V-10, I-27, P-01
This article was about the NFL networks not being able to broadcast through certain cable providers. As well as other providers I'm sure, the cable providers focused in on in this article were Comcast and Time Warner. Big cable providers such as these provide certain sports related channels created by the provider and favor those well over other networks. Even some local networks are finding trouble in this area. The NFL has brought in the FCC to help subside the issues at hand. The main issue that has come across is there are many people all over the country that want to watch their teams, but can't, because the cable provider they have refuses use channels that view all the games. Another related issue is that when the cable providers only use certain channels to show certain games, niether the NFL nor the teams playing make a profit from the television broadcast. They're only making money through the people actually in attendance to the game. The author brought out many good points as to why it would help both sides to use these networks. If the provider use certain networks to show more games on tv, more people will buy into that provider. This way, the provider makes more money by more people using their services, and the networks make more money by more people viewing games through their networks. Why this isn't happening, we don't know. By bringer federal consent into the picture, hopefully both sides come out happy.
[Week 10] V-10, I-27, P-10
"Beckham helps kick up some MLS numbers"
David Beckham has become the spotlight for the MLS since signing with the Los Angeles Galaxy. He has increased attendance at both home and away games and ratings for games shown on television. The Galaxy has had a 16 and a half percent increase in attendance since last year before Beckham joined the club.
I'm not a big fan of soccer, but I think it is crazy how much one guy has done for the whole sport of soccer. Beckham is almost single handedly putting the MLS on the map and he hasn't even played in all the games. People don't even need to see him play, just seeing the guy in person, draws a crowd. I think if the MLS does the same with a couple of the other big name players like Ronaldinho it can really do alot with gaining popularity.
[week10] "NBA makes download store a fixture for regular season"
V-10, I-27, P-7
This article discusses about the NBA game broadcasting download store in the NBA's official website. They have expeirenced this system during the last season's playoff and plan to do it for this seasons' games as well. Games are going to be provided 2.99 dollars a game. Furthermore, NBA has made cooperation with Apple, Facebook, Youtube so that they can make prospects within the online.
I think this is a very wise policy for NBA these days. Since the league is expanding the market worldwide, many more fans want to watch the games now. There are some games broadcasted to the world, but there are still more fans who can't watch the games as they want. By using this method, NBA can earn money and make more fans throughout the world at the same time. Also, it will attract fans in the United States as well. Many young fans now use internet for their daily lives. Having digital datas in their computers make them feel more attachment with the subject, for example music ore movies. So it can appeal to the basketball fans who want to have the game file they really like.
[week 11] "Lease terms limit pool of overseas candidates for NFL" V-11, I-28, P-36
This article is about the NFL choosing teams for the international football game next year. They have about 16 teams to choose from which is about half the NFL. 11 teams are absolutely not able to give up a home game because of the lease on their stadium. Other teams may not want to play oversees just because they do not want to give up a home game. The Cleveland Browns are able to do it but the manager does not want to take them away from their home stadium because of all the time they spent outside of Cleveland in the 90's.
I think that this is a very interesting topic in the NFL. It shows you what teams are ready or not ready to play outside of their home stadium. I think it would be a good idea for a team to play the international game because it can get their name out oversees and possibly increase their revenue by having foreign people by their product.
[week 11] "Noah opts for dad's brand, Le Coq Sportif"
V-10 I-28 P-6
Joakim Noah was a first round pick from the Chicago Bulls. He signed for a six year deal with Le Coq Sportif, a French footwear and apparel brand his father, Yannick, has endorsed for years. Le Coq Sportif wants to establish itself in the US. They see that many people love basketball and want to try make people wear Le Coq Sportif. Noah will wear this footwear in NBA games. I think that it is cool that Noah is going to his dads footwear company. Hopefully people will buy these shoes.
[Week 11] "Noah opts for dad's brand, Le Coq Sportif"
V-10 I-28 P-6
This article is about Joakim Noah the Chicago Bull's first round pick for the 2007-2008 season. Due to an ankle injury he had to watch from the sidelines for the start of the season. Instead of signing a deal with Nike or Adidas Joakim signed a six year deal with Le Coq Sportif, a French footwear and apparel brand that his father was endorsed for years. Le Coq Sportif was owned by Adidas for more than 40 years until it was sold to Brown Shoe Co. in 1995 and now its owned by majority of Swiss company Airesis, which a former Adidas head Robert Louis-Dreyfus is a principal. Noah will wear Le Coq Sportif brand shoes in the NBA games and hopefully will bring more attention to younger kids to wear that brand. I think it is a good idea for Joakim to go with a different endoresment other than top name brands. That means then there will be more attention to him rather than hundred other athletes and plus its his own fathers brand. I personally never heard of this brand before probably because its orgin is from France but hopefully it will become more popular with Joakim Noah representing their products.
